Leader Caudrelier has reason to smile as he climbs towards the NE'ly Trades
In a video broadcast yesterday afternoon, the leader of the Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest Charles Caudrelier reported that the his last few days along the Brazilian coast have been difficult.

But the skipper of Maxi Edmond de Rothschild now is into moderate breezes, much more favorable conditions to accelerate his progress northwards. He remains 1,600 miles ahead of Armel Le Cleac'h who is second and 2,000 miles ahead of Thomas Coville in third, who continues to follow the coast of Argentina.

Caudrelier, shirtless and trying his best to profit from the warmth, smiled, "It's been several days since I have given any news, the last few days have been difficult. The weather was getting worse day by day, which meant we had to make a lot of effort for little real gain. The wind conditions were quite changeable, the boat demanding, the sea, the wind irregular. I just couldn't just get the boat to move forwards like I wanted!"

But now he is into warmer weather and flat seas, "It's really nice, apart from the fact that I'm suffering a bit from the heat. I'm not going fast but it's going faster than the routings and we've made good progress since yesterday. Things are going well."

Ocean Cruising Club 2023 Awards for Sailing and Voyaging Excellence
The Ocean Cruising Club has announced the winners of its 2023 awards for sailing and voyaging accomplishments including the OCC Lifetime Award, the Barton Cup and the Seamanship Award.

The OCC Lifetime Award
The Reverend Bob Shepton has combined decades of high latitude sailing with extreme mountain climbing to earn the OCC's Lifetime Award for noteworthy ocean voyaging. His accolades and accomplishments aboard his modest Westerly Discus 33, Dodo's Delight, are too numerous to list

The Barton Cup
Rob Barton rowed the 4,470 nautical miles from Australia to Tanzania solo in 86 days to earn this year's Barton Cup. This award, named for his grandfather and OCC Founder, Hum Barton, recognises an OCC member who has made an exceptional voyage. Rob is the first person to successfully row this passage, solo and non-stop, earning him a Guinness World Record.

The OCC Seamanship Award
The OCC Seamanship Award recognizes exceptional skill or bravery at sea. German OCC members Astrid Clausen-Grube and Martin Grube exemplified skill and composure when faced with a potential dismasting of their Jutlandic 37 DS sloop Pincoya during their first Atlantic crossing.

The additional award winners for 2023 include:

- Vasey Vase: Stephanie Connor and Martin Fuller
- Jester Trophy and David Wallis Trophy: Trevor Robertson
- Water Music Award: Sherry and Dave McCampbell

2024 Aegean 600

Aegean 600 Organizers at the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) are pleased to announce the 2024 edition of the Aegean 600 is now open for entry. The event is being held over 5-13 July 2024 and is co-organized by the host venue at Olympic Marine.

Now in its fourth annual edition, the race has grown in interest and popularity every year, with last year's third edition attracting 500 sailors racing on 45 yachts from 16 nations. What attracts them is this race's unique format: a scenic offshore journey of 605 miles that starts and finishes under the watchful gaze of the Ancient Temple of Poseidon poised on the sea cliff above Attica's Cape Sounio.

Besides this amazing and historic start and finish venue, the course itself is a spectacular tour that passes 13 iconic Greek islands, including a lap around the volcanic caldera of Santorini in the first part of the race and later towards end of the race through a gap at the islands of Dilos and Mykonos.

The ever-present northerly Meltemi winds that can peak to over 30 knots propels the fleet around this course, challenging their skills in both seamanship and navigation, yet also delivering clear sunny skies, starry nights and warm waters throughout.

Seaworthy monohulls of minimum length of 9.00 m and seaworthy multihulls of length 9.15 m and larger are welcome to enter with ORC and/or IRC certificates.

Recognized offshore class yachts such as Dehler 30 One Designs, Class 40's, Mini 6.5's, Figaro 2's and Figaro 3's are also welcome to enter. The event will also welcome Maxi yachts as a race on the 2024 International Maxi Class (IMA's) calendar of events.

Loick Peyron "On these machines, the crux of the matter is anticipation, especially in critical moments"
Loick Peyron is a genuine icon of French ocean racing, an outstanding sailor as well as a wonderful teller of sea stories. He also has an incredible, long, storied track record. Since 2012 he was the holder of the Jules-Verne trophy for five years, he is a past winner of the Route du Rhum (2014), the English Transat (1992, 1996, 2008), the Transat Jacques Vabre (1999, 2005), and four times world champion in the Orma multihulls. Peyron knows a lot about multihulls of all sizes and about racing around the world. And he loves to share his passion. We spoke to Loick as Charles Caudrelier continues his ascent back up the Atlantic.

Now that we are over halfway through the course, how does this race inspire you Loick?
Well there have been some great things and a great fight, even if it died off a bit. The start was quite exciting despite the misfortunes of some. The Tom (Laperche) - Charles (Caudrelier) duel was inspiring. What's surprising is seeing everyone's trajectory. Apart from Charles, they have all had difficult conditions, sequences which did not favor comebacks. The differences now are considerable but it is not surprising as the boats are so fast. The problem with high speed is precisely that the gaps grow quickly to become significant gaps.

Charles Caudrelier has dominated the race continuously since January 17. Are you impressed by his race round the world?
He has very good control, a lot of talent and a measure of luck too, everything which adds upto allowing him to overcome a lot of pitfalls and build a considerable lead. Stopping or having to abandon does not take away from the talents of the skippers who have had to: at this level of competition, there are nothing but good sailors. But mechanically, the misfortunes of others have rather favored him. The partnership he has with his machine is the longest terms and the most proven. Charles knows his boat perfectly and he has the luxury of being able to slow down, of not being forced to push too hard.

Franck Cammas also talked about the importance of luck...
Yes, it is sometimes the only key parameter, certainly with OFNIs in any case. The OFNIs need also to be lucky, because sometimes they are living beings. But luck is one of the parameters which is totally unmanageable, the primary worry on the these boats, an imponderable which is part of the game

We live to fight another day : The tough reality of ocean sailing
Sparrow, aka Shipyard Brewing, dismasted and abandoned. Click on image to enlarge.

Sparrow, aka Shipyard Brewing David Linger on Koloa Maoli, an early OCD Class40 with the same hull as Cole Brauer's First Light and Ari Kansakoski's ZEROchallenge, rounded Cape Horn yesterday February 12th at 13:30 UTC. The southern Pacific gave no discounts to the American sailors who had brilliantly conducted the event with an excellent balance between progress and boat preservation. His boat had been prepared impeccably by Maine Yacht Center and had always stood out for the meticulous attention to detail that was paid in making the boat ready for the Global Solo Challenge.

On February 8th, however, Dave experienced a severe knock down and whilst the boat was laid on its side for moments that feel like an eternity, the pressure of the water caused the boom to break in the middle. Additional stress cracking developed at the aft end of the custom carbon boom. Dave had little option other than to press on for his rounding with no place to shelter from the wind and waves. The skipper had to focus on keeping up the pace in order to round Cape Horn ahead of a storm forecast to bring treacherous conditions at the tip of the southern American continent.

Dave described the morning of his rounding and the spotting of land after the darkest of nights as one of the most beautiful moments in his voyage so far. He sailed within 2.5 miles of the Cabo de Hornos lighthouse and we hope to retrieve the photos taken by the guardian with his telescope. At the time of writing Koloa Maoli was motoring up the Beagle channel to reach Ushuaia where Dave has already made arrangements for a stopover to repair his boom and restart as soon as possible in the Global Solo Challenge. -- Marco Nannini / Global Solo Challenge

* Ronnie Simpson is safe and shares difficult farewell

We could not be happier in relaying the news that Ronnie Simpson is safe and well and has boarded the Taiwanese ship SAKIZAYA YOUTH. We can only imagine the mix of relief and sadness as Ronnie had to bid his last farewell to Sparrow, aka Shipyard Brewing, his companion in this amazing journey by the bitter ending but the countless amazing memories.

Jeanneau Yachts 55 Released after her two big sisters, the Jeanneau Yachts 55 is the most innovative of the trio, with an aft deck offering revolutionary lounging space and a cockpit featuring a flexible dinette and separate stairways to each of the three guest cabins.

For its new sailing yacht, Jeanneau turned to Philippe Briand for the hull and Andrew Winch for the interiors.

The 55 has a vacuum-infused GRP hull with an LOA of almost 17m and a beam just under 5m. The keel draught is 2.45m and the yacht's twin rudders have self-aligning roller bearings. This serious sailing setup is easy to manage short-handed, with an in-mast furling mainsail and a furling jib with self-tacking jib track offered as standard.

RM YachtsRM Yachts' new 1080 is a more powerful and spacious version of one of the marque's most successful boats – and it will be even faster downwind.

RM 1080

Over the past 35 years RM Yachts has taken a unique, yet successful, path developing increasingly innovative and refined performance cruising yachts that harness the benefits of building in epoxy and plywood. The RM1080 is the La Rochelle-based yard's latest little rocket and is in many ways a direct development of racing Class 40s, both inside and out.

It's a Marc Lombard design that also retains key attributes of existing RM models, including exceptional attention to detail and standard of finish, plus bright interiors with excellent natural light thanks to the trademark big forward coachroof window. There's also an option of very efficient twin bulb keels that combine moderate draught with the ability to dry out at low water, yet without compromising sailing qualities.

What are the big differences between this new model and the eight-year-old RM1070 it replaces? While that model was very well regarded, 'the yacht design world has moved a lot in that time,' says RM's Cesar Dohy. 'The boats are getting more powerful and they are now much wider forward.'

The new Hanse 410, which was introduced at the Cannes boat show last September, was nominated for European Boat of the Year 2004 in the family cruiser category. Although it lost out to the new Dufour 41, the Hanse 410 deserves a special mention. The mid-size cruiser embodies all of what Hanse offers in 2024: she is sleek and very attractive; she has balanced lines and a low slung cabin top; she has a powerful sailing rig with a self-tacking jib that will be both fast and easy to handle; her cockpit is huge and has a big fold-down transom cum swim platform; below she has three sleeping cabins and can also accommodate either one or two heads; and the cabin is full of light and plenty of ventilation. German designed, eningeered and built, the Hanse 410 exudes practicality, safety and modernity. A family will be able to live aboard the new 410 comfortably either for summer sailing vacations or for longer cruises over the horizon. -- George Day, Cruising Compass

Launched last fall in time for the Annapolis sailboat show, the new Oceanis 37.1 completes the seventh generation of the Oceanis line that includes eight models launched since 2017. The Marc Lombard-designed hull and rig provides a roomy family cruising sloop with a surprising turn of speed. Note the broad transom, the chine that runs the full length of the boat and the very full hull sections forward, which all combine to enhance the hull's stability while providing plenty of interior volume.

Beneteau Oceanis 37.1

The cockpit is spacious for a 37-footer with bench seats long enough to sleep on and a table that will seat up to six. The twin wheels provide great visibility forward from both sides of the cockpit and open a clear pathway aft to the fold-down transom and swim platform. For ease of handling, all sheets run aft to winches and line stoppers by the helms, while halyards and sail trim control lines run to a winch on the cabintop. The starboard helm pod will have the seven-inch chartplotter, autopilot control and sailing instruments.

At BOOT in Dusseldorf we visited, in the company of Magnus Rassy, the Hallberg Rassy 69, the largest boat ever built by HR.

Out of the water, the Hallberg Rassy appears even larger than it actually is. It is a massive boat that fully expresses its 46 tons.

Hallberg Rassy 69

The boat features a series of robust omegas, large reinforcement rings that envelop and stiffen the structure, giving a tangible sensation of solidity.

Such important structures are necessary to be able to carry around those 46 tons we were talking about before, even if a much lighter boat would be just as robust with less reinforcements.

As well as being solid, the Hallberg Rassy 69 also has a remarkable interior: unabashedly classic without any concessions to new trends, but beautiful. The wood is worked perfectly and when you enter it you can feel all its warmth. Outside, a hard top covers the internal cockpit, but to be able to use it comfortably it must not exceed one meter and sixty meters in height. The cockpit is central, deep and perfectly protected, in its half where the hard top does not reach you can move well.

The boat is not a semi-custom; you cannot choose to have the interior as you want, but there are many variations and it is difficult not to find one that corresponds to your needs.

The price of this jewel?

Five million one hundred thousand euros plus VAT, plus accessories, plus additional expenses.

This is Magnus Rassy's personal boat and historical customers are competing to get it.

Magnus explained to us that he always takes the first example of each model to be able to fully understand its strengths and weaknesses and his customers are convinced that that first example is the most refined of the entire series.
