Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest, Taking a view on ETAs
The data, corroborated by the various routing cells give some kind of indication of what might be expected. The most imminent ETA is for the passage of fourth placed Anthony Marchand. With 380 miles to sail to the longitude of South East Cape, Tasmania, Marchand should sail Actual Ultim 3 into the Pacific tomorrow, Thursday morning UTC.

In fifth is Eric Peron, who is currently diving due south to position himself at the front of a depression which will probably take him to Cape Leeuwin this Friday, February 9 in the morning UTC. This Wednesday evening Peron on Adagio is nearly 800 miles from the Pacific.

In second Armel Le Cleac'h has 2,300 miles from his fourth passage of Cape Horn – his first on a Multihull. He should be able to maintain good averages, close to 800 miles per 24 hours, which would allow him to leave the Pacific Ocean for the South Atlantic on Sunday morning . Four hundred miles behind him Thomas Coville should pass Cape Horn again, this time during the night from Sunday to Monday.

And looking to a projected ETA, a possible finish date for Charles Caudrelier it's a longterm view. The weather files are not sufficiently precise over a 14 day period to give anything more than a two day window, but at the moment it looks like Friday February 23 or Saturday February 24.

Ocean Globe Race: Translated 9 Cape Horn Video and Photos
Translated 9 ITL (09), the Italian 65-foot Swan formerly known as ADC Accutrac, passed Cape Horn at 10:29 UTC on February 6th. With 15kn winds from the north, gusting 20 and 2-metre seas they sailed just 0.5 mile from the coast of Cape Horn giving them a perfect view of the iconic rock.

Leading in IRC, they were just beaten around the horn by Pen Duick VI, who completed the passage at 04:51 UTC.

The crew, who'd just experienced their first 'real' Southern Ocean weather, were naturally ecstatic about their achievement. "It was magical. We were sleeping and Ezgim called us and said we're at Cape Horn, Cape Horn! At first, I thought aaaaah no, we're sleeping but then realised AHHHH CAPE HORN! We have to go up! We put on our full weather gear and when came out we saw the beautiful rock that everyone dreams of. The feeling of accomplishment is over the roof." -- Turkish Crew Member Derin Deniz

2024 Aegean 600

Aegean 600 Organizers at the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) are pleased to announce the 2024 edition of the Aegean 600 is now open for entry. The event is being held over 5-13 July 2024 and is co-organized by the host venue at Olympic Marine.

Now in its fourth annual edition, the race has grown in interest and popularity every year, with last year's third edition attracting 500 sailors racing on 45 yachts from 16 nations. What attracts them is this race's unique format: a scenic offshore journey of 605 miles that starts and finishes under the watchful gaze of the Ancient Temple of Poseidon poised on the sea cliff above Attica's Cape Sounio.

Besides this amazing and historic start and finish venue, the course itself is a spectacular tour that passes 13 iconic Greek islands, including a lap around the volcanic caldera of Santorini in the first part of the race and later towards end of the race through a gap at the islands of Dilos and Mykonos.

The ever-present northerly Meltemi winds that can peak to over 30 knots propels the fleet around this course, challenging their skills in both seamanship and navigation, yet also delivering clear sunny skies, starry nights and warm waters throughout.

Seaworthy monohulls of minimum length of 9.00 m and seaworthy multihulls of length 9.15 m and larger are welcome to enter with ORC and/or IRC certificates.

Recognized offshore class yachts such as Dehler 30 One Designs, Class 40's, Mini 6.5's, Figaro 2's and Figaro 3's are also welcome to enter. The event will also welcome Maxi yachts as a race on the 2024 International Maxi Class (IMA's) calendar of events.

America's Cup: Three teams advise launch date intentions - and what we could see in early April

America's Cup Three teams have now given the required two months' notice of their intention to launch their respective new AC75s, which will be their race boats in the 2024 America's Cup Regattas.

Emirates Team New Zealand and Alinghi Red Bull Racing gave notification yesterday, and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli issued theirs today.

Three teams have yet to advise their intentions.

On Monday, the INEOS Britannia team principal, Sir Ben Ainslie, confirmed that the team's boat had left Carrington Boats to build the facility in Hythe, Southampton. The team has yet to nominate a launch date officially.

The new French Challenger, Orient Express Racing team, has yet to issue a launch date notification for their AC75, developed from a base design supplied by the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand. Experienced French builder Multiplast is building the yacht.

New York Yacht Club's team, American Magic, are the other team to have yet to advise a launch notification. A months ago, in an interview with the AC37 Joint Recon team, President of Sailing Operations, Terry Hutchinson, responded to a question on whether American Magic was at or close to the deadline for locking in the current foil design and indicated that the American Magic launch date was still a couple of months off.

WASZP Class: 180 Entries for Norway
Click on image for photo gallery.

WASZP Class The WASZP Class, renowned as the premier one-design foiling dinghy globally, is making waves with unprecedented growth and record-breaking participation. The upcoming event in Sandefjord, Norway, slated for August 2024, has already shattered expectations, with all 150 original slots snapped up within a mere 48 hours of entries opening. In response to overwhelming demand, event organisers, Sandefjord Seilforening, in collaboration with WASZP, have worked tirelessly to open an additional 30 slots, bringing the total entry list to a total of 180 boats.

For the first time in history, the WASZP_X and 6.9m class will have their own dedicated course, and the open fleet will be divided into two fleets to accommodate the size of this extraordinary fleet. Sandefjord Island is set to become the vibrant social hub for the event, promising one of the most unique atmospheres in the world of sailing.

Marc Ablett, WASZP General Manager, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "The exponential growth of the class globally is truly remarkable. The overwhelming response to the Sandefjord event, has been incredible and we could of easily seen 220+ at this event. We are on track to surpass our previous record of 172 boats at the 2022 Games in Garda, and we're aiming for an even larger fleet at the 2025 Games in Weymouth, UK with the prospect of 250+ boats a real possibility."

Ablett continued, "The prospect of a stand-alone WASZP_X Youth Games (Worlds) and the increasing number of women participants (40 for Norway) reflect the growth of the WASZP community, within our key pillars. We are also seeing outstanding growth in North America and are heading towards a record fleet in the Americas Championships, setting the stage for the International WASZP Games in North America in 2026."

The Americas Championships are expected to draw over 30 entries, with hopes to exceed 40 for the event in Hawaii. There is still time to enter the Americas Championships -

18 Skiffs: The Kiwis are coming
1952 and 1954 world champion, Intrigue introduced the trapeze to the 18s. Photo from the Graham Mander collection. Click on image for photo gallery.

18 Skiffs When COVID-19 struck Sydney during the JJ Giltinan World 18 footer Championship in March 2020, it not only ended the three consecutive winning streak of the champion New Zealand Honda Marine team, the resulting pandemic also put an end to the immediate future of Kiwi challenges.

But that's all about to change in March 2024, when for the first time since that 'crazy' 2020 regatta, a three-pronged New Zealand group of young 18ft skiff crews are back to resume the regular ANZAC challenge, which goes back to the original World 18 footer Championship in 1938.

The Auckland Skiff League fleet has been in rebuild mode during 2023-24 since the sailors were forced into lockdowns for three seasons, but with everything now back to some kind of normal, a small but enthusiastic group is ready to take on the might of the world's best 18ft skiff teams from Australia, Germany, UK and Denmark, on Sydney Harbour from March 1-10.

The three New Zealand teams, in the 26-team fleet from five countries at the 2024 JJs, are:
ASCC, Eli Liefting, Adam Mustill, Josh Schon
ASCC2, Craig Keenan, Sam Richardson, Gavin Ninnes
RAYC, Jack Frewin, Ollie Gilmour, Luc Gladwell

Only Eli Liefting has competed at a previous JJs regatta when he crewed with Peron Pearse and Harry Clark on Maersk Line in 2020.

Seven-times JJ Giltinan World 18ft Skiff champion and SailMedia Livestream commentator Andrew 'Bucko' Buckland is someone who is supportive of New Zealand sailing talent and what the Kiwis have achieved over the 86 years of the JJ Giltinan world championship.

According to Andrew, "Who can forget the impact that the NZ trio of Josh Porebski, Jack Simpson and Dave Hazard had on the 2019 JJ Giltinan series by winning heat one in virtually their first 18 skiff race on Sydney Harbour; the crew anxiously checking the course sheet when leading up the last windward beat."

"But of course the Kiwi impact has always been around in both design and innovation - immediately post WWII Jack Logan's Komutu skimmer type and then a long string of influence probably capped by the efforts of Bruce Farr and Russell Bowler; Russell pioneering the now universal sandwich construction and Bruce advancing almost every other facet of skiff design." -- Frank Quealey Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Corinthian Sailing's Best Journey Begins With Resolute Cup
San Diego Yacht Club's path to the pinnacle of Corinthian sailing started with a win in the 2018 Resolute Cup. At the time, Tyler Sinks and his team had no way of knowing it would take five years, numerous cross country flights and more than a little heartbreak before they could bring the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup home to San Diego. But the most rewarding journeys in life usually come without a precise roadmap or a fixed schedule.

"The Invitational Cup is a big undertaking, both financially and logistically," says Sinks (above, at left, after winning the 2018 Resolute Cup). "It took a full team effort to help raise the funds, get the days off work, cancel other plans and quite simply, prioritize the regatta. It's the cost of winning, and it was all worth it in the end. Having come so close in 2019 and 2021, winning in 2023 felt all that much better knowing how much we had all put into it. The feeling is hard to describe."

Since 2010, the Resolute Cup has served as a Corinthian Championship for U.S. Yacht Clubs and the only surefire pathway for an American club to earn a berth in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, Corinthian sailing's most prestigious international competition. The seventh edition of the Resolute Cup is scheduled for September 9 to 14 at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I. The regatta will utilize the Club's fleet of Sonars, with provided sails, equalized rig tune and on-the-water umpiring ensuring sailing's ultimate level playing field. The request for invitation window is currently open and will close on Friday, February 23. -- Stuart Streuli, Director of Communications
