Charles Caudrelier (Maxi Edmond de Rothschild) passes Cape Horn

Charles Caudrelier Long time leader of the Arkea Ultim Challenge - Brest solo multihull race around the world, French skipper Charles Caudrelier on the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild is first to pass Cape Horn. He passed the famous landmark at 17:08:20hrs UTC this Tuesday. His elapsed time for the passage from the race start is 30d 4hrs 38m and 20secs. The French racer has now led the race at all three of the course's Great Capes and now attacks the 7000 miles ascent of the Atlantic back to Brest.

Because of a big storm at Cape Horn over the weekend, Caudrelier had to put his race on hold, going very slowly for some 48 hours to avoid the heinous weather system. He sped up again on Sunday evening to head east again and arrive at Cape Horn this Tuesday evening.

The passage of Cape Horn represents an important moment of deliverance for generations of sailors. Caudrelier's prudence was rewarded with moderate to fresh N'ly winds which allowed him to pass at around 20-30kts of boat speed this evening. Second placed Armel Le Cleac'h (Maxi Banque Populaire XI) and third placed Thomas Coville (Sodebo Ultim 3, 3rd) are expected at Cape Horn this weekend.

Pen Duick VI First To Cape Horn - McIntyre OGR
The renowned 73-foot Bermudan Ketch, Pen Duick VI FR (14) skippered by the equally legendary Marie Tabarly, rounded the notorious Cape Horn at 04:51 UTC, 6th February. For Tabarly and her eleven crew, it's a momentous achievement. But, no doubt, being head of the OGR fleet past Cape Horn makes the experience even sweeter for the super-competitive skipper.

The days approaching Cape Horn brought 35-knot winds, gusting to 55, 6-8 metre seas, a confused sea state, with 2-metre secondary swells, it's just what Pen Duick VI, and Tabarly, had been craving - a challenge. Consistent average speeds of over 10.5 knots heading to Cape Horn were normal, with 240 nm a day ticked off the chart - nothing unusual. In fact, just prior to the final approach, Pen Duick VI recorded a boat new speed record of 28.3kn!!

Concerns about a 'mega' storm earlier in the week by some commentators never materialised - just your regular 'Southern Ocean weather' for the area says race organiser, Don McIntyre . And despite the OGR's warnings about 'being careful what you wish for' some REAL 'Southern Ocean weather' is exactly what Pen Duick VI, in fact, the entire 13-strong fleet, had been waiting for since the start of Leg 3 in Auckland, back on January 14th. Crews are happy! Ironically, the actual passing itself proved the tamest weather in days for Pen Duick VI with 25k NW gusting 40k 2.5-3.5m sea and a temperature of 10ºC. They passed 2.5 nm off Cape Horn.

Since the OGR started in Southampton (10th), Tabarly has stated that Pen Duick VI just required strong winds to show what the powerful yacht and her crew are made of. Finally, after months of waiting and searching, the winds showed up in the South Ocean this week, and Pen Duick VI bared his teeth.

IRC Rating open for 2024
Applications are open for 2024 IRC Rating and the IRC Rating Authority (RORC Rating Office and UNCL, Pôle Course du YCF) have already issued certificates to over 600 northern hemisphere boats for the new season with another 600 southern hemisphere boats currently enjoying great racing under IRC. Rating certificates for IRC are not renewed automatically as owners are given the opportunity to declare any changes to their rated data before their certificate is issued, as well as supply any new information that may be required.

This year all owners must declare the maximum number of headsails they will carry on board while racing; this is a new input following the approval of the 2024 rule changes by IRC Congress. Advice regarding this rule, the sails to be declared and answers to related questions can be found on the IRC website

Other changes to IRC for 2024 include updates to the rules around a single furling headsail, reduction in the minimum half width ratio for a flying headsail to 60% of the foot, updated mainsail width definitions to reflect the existing rule that the largest data from any mainsail must be on the certificate, and a requirement for sail measurement stickers for Endorsed certificates. Rating formulation development includes some minor changes to how rig configuration is rated.

The IRC website includes the full rule text and information on rule changes: https://ircrating.org/irc-rule/. The 2024 IRC rule applies from 1st January 2024 except in countries with June-May validity where the rule will apply from 1st June 2024.

IRC certificate application is straightforward, particularly for those revalidating a recent valid certificate. For boats racing in the UK the MyIRC application system is online at https://myirc.rorcrating.com, while those racing elsewhere should contact their local IRC Rule Authority

420s dominate 30-knot Pursuit but Pascoe wins the Tiger

Pascoe wins the Tiger Various boats enjoyed their moment to shine at the Tiger Trophy but once again it was the unstoppable Sam Pascoe who powered his Musto Skiff singlehander to overall victory at the seventh event of this season's wild and windy Selden Sailjuice Winter Series.

There were 106 entries from 41 different classes who showed up for two days of handicap competition at Rutland Sailing Club. There was a broad spectrum of boats for the event, ranging from Toppers to foiling Waszps and International Moths, and a Sailjuice first, the presence of three iQFOiL foiling windsurfers, the equipment about to make its Olympic debut later this summer at Paris 2024.

The 420s were the largest fleet with 10 boats, making the Tiger a class designated event, and the chance for some of the country's top youth sailors to gain some valuable big fleet experience. The Tiger was one of the most diverse entries seen this winter, or in fact any time on the UK racing scene.

Top Speeds from SailRacer GPS Trackers (sustained over 20 seconds)
Gareth Davies Int Moth (Foiling) 24.17kts
Matthew Lea iQFOiL 19.03kts
Tom Jones iQFOiL 11 16.44kts

Corrected Time
Michael and Samuel Dyer 29er 15.38kts
Sam Pascoe, Musto Skiff 16.19kts
Dan Vincent, Musto Skiff 14.91kts

Interestingly the top speeds for the foilers were achieved on Saturday and the best corrected speeds on Sunday.

Results from the Tiger Trophy

Overall
After seven events, and three discards, Sam Pascoe (Musto Skiff - Castle Cove SC) with five wins dominates. Last winter's runner up Ben Flower (ILCA 7 - Paignton SC), holds onto to second and will be competing at Oxford after returning from his trip to the World Championships in Australia. Sam Barker (Musto Skiff - Castle Cove SC), jumps 12 places to 3rd overall.

Overall results after seven events

he final event of what has been a barnstorming winter season is the Oxford Blue at Farmoor Reservoir. Date: 17 February. To sign up...

AC40 Class Association Announces First Sale To Private Owners
The confirmation of the first private team to join the AC40 Circuit is major step forward for the Association as it establishes the new AC40 Class.

Committed to being the first fully privately owned AC40 yacht, the new team will join the 11 other AC40 yachts already on the water. While wishing to remain anonymous at this stage, the long-running and experienced team says it recognizes that the sport of sailing is changing and, like other industries, it must stay at the forefront of technology and teamwork to create something truly exciting.

In addition to securing its first private owner, the AC40 Class confirms it has received four expressions of interest from current AC40 teams who have expressed their intentions to race with one or both of their AC40s. The expectation is that the AC40 team owners will also be behind the wheel.

For further information on the AC40 Class or to express interest in either the yachts or events, please contact:

Noiseless, Clean & Reliable: the Untold Story of HMCo.'s Electric Launches
The Herreshoff Marine Museum's curator Evelyn Ansel tells of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company's adoption of electric motors for steam yacht tenders in the early 20th century, a time when electric motors were viable head-to-head competitors with internal-combustion engines for small-craft auxiliary power as the era of the steam engine waned.

Evelyn has been the curator at the Herreshoff Marine Museum since 2021. Previously, she has worked at the MIT Museum in Cambridge MA, the Mystic Seaport Museum of Mystic CT, and the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, and is an occasional contributor to WoodenBoat Magazine.
