Final mile decides Rolex Sydney Hobart line honours in favour of LawConnect
In what has been an epic race from start to finish, Christian Beck's LawConnect has lost her bridesmaid tag of the last three years to claim line honours in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race this morning, crossing the Castray Esplanade finish line in Hobart at 08.03.58am this morning in the time of 1 day 19 hours 03 minutes 58 seconds

The John Winning Jnr skippered Andoo Comanche held the upper hand for most of the 628 nautical mile race, but LawConnect was always there and overtook her at one point.

Early this morning there was little between the two and once again the Derwent sealed both boats fates, as a light, light breeze, teased and cajoled concentrating crews in an absolute thriller to the finish line.

Christian Beck's yacht finished well outside the race record of 1 day 9hrs 15min 24 sec, ironically set by the boat they beat today, which sailed as LDV Comanche to line honours victory in 2017 by her then owners, Jim Cooney and Samantha Grant.

It did not matter though.

Only 51 seconds separated LawConnect and Andoo Comanche at the end, in the second closest finish in the history of the race. The closest was in 1982 when Condor beat Apollo over the line by seven seconds.

Caribbean Multihull Challenge to Co-sponsor New Environment Award
Caribbean Multihull Challenge To celebrate the success of its annual Race and Rally event, the Caribbean Multihull Challenge is teaming up with the 25-year-old TradeWinds Experience membership charter company and two important Caribbean environmental NGO's to create an award for a local Environmental Hero to be presented at a Press Conference on registration day for the regatta -- 31 January 2024.

The Sint Maarten Yacht Club and its annual CMC is going beyond simply running an exciting four-day racing and rallying event to add what Stephen Burzon - Volunteer Marketing and Operations Director - calls 'SOUL' - with a program to honor sustainability and the preservation of the marine environment of the entire Caribbean region. Burzon says.. "For 2024, the domino's simply fell into place with the joining together of the world-wide debut of TradeWinds' brand-new 59' TW6e Smart Electric Luxury Catamaran, the Caribbean Cetacean Society (CCS), and CLEAR Caribbean in a program to select what Owen Day of CLEAR calls a 'foot soldier' of environmental efforts in our local oceans as a 2024 honoree.

On 31 January at 1200 hours - TradeWinds will sponsor the award ceremony at a by invitation only Press Conference on the Sailing School Dock at the SMYC; as well as contribute a modest cash award to the to-be-named Hero. The Award will be presented by Tadzio Bervoets of the CCS along with Ricardo Flores of TradeWinds. It is hoped that various St Maarten government officials will be in attendance along with press from SXM, and several US, European, and Caribbean countries.

On Thursday 1 February, the 6th CMC will kick off the four-day racing event and the three nation cruising rally concluding on Sunday 4 February.

It's a Wow! - Rondal
Rondal The design brief for the 65m ketch Aquarius II posed challenges for the rig and winch designers at Rondal - who delivered some creative solutions

The 65-metre Dykstra designed ketch Aquarius II will be one of the stand-out performance superyachts of her generation when launched next year. She is currently in build at the Royal Huisman shipyard in the Netherlands, with Rondal closely involved from conception to provide expertise in the design, engineering and fabrication of sailing systems and composite structures.

'The loads aboard Aquarius II are high and present some interesting challenges,' says Rondal's lead project engineer Edoardo Volpe. 'Yet Rondal's reputation is built on resolving challenges. We have already built three impressive 70m-plus rigs in recent years and we are currently preparing a rig for an 85m sloop, which will become one of the world's largest.

12 Boat Designers Who Shaped Our World
It doesn't matter which dock you walk down. It could be in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Port Townsend, Washington, Newport, Rhode Island, or anywhere in between. Every single boat on those docks - the styling cues, hull shapes, sheerlines - began as visions in the minds of boat designers.

Trying to decide which designers made the biggest impact during the 60 years Soundings has been published is like trying to decide which cruising ground is the best. They're all exceptional in their own ways, with the beauty being in the eye of the beholder. As we chose 12 designers from the past six decades, we aimed to include people who achieved not just excellence, but also legacy.

To come up with a dozen names we started with a list of over 50 designers. We know that some may disagree with this list or feel that someone was overlooked. So please let us know who you think should have been included by writing us at .

The oldest videos of 12 Metre class yachts sailing
Our video archive is fully searchable, and linked to all the clubs and classes in our database. It is updated weekly with the latest videos of sailing, but here we delve into the past, and round-up everything that shows sailing in the 12 Metre class, since we have so many to choose from.

Our oldest videos are from the 1930s, and perhaps show a time when the 12 Metres attracted less publicity than the J Class, hence the majority of screen time is devoted to the latter. If you want to catch a quick glimpse of early 12 Metres in the UK, see Royal Harwich YC season opens in 1933 or Harwich Regatta 1934 but there is sadly not much detail to observe.

Better footage of the 12s is available in the video of Cowes Week 1937 below, which includes a quick glimpse at what well-dressed ladies of the time were wearing! -- Magnus Smith

3 Championships taking place during Plymouth Race Week 2024
Thursday 11th July will see the welcome return of Plymouth Race Week, 2024.

There will be 3 great events happening simultaneously during the 4-day regatta taking place over 3 racecourses in Plymouth Sound National Marine Park.

Racecourse A will see the IRC Southwest Championships. As with all racing over the week this is an open event which will run from committee boat starts and managed by the RWYC. Within the IRC class will be break-out results for RC1000 and RC900, 2 local initiatives which have seen some great racing over the past 2 years. Following a lunchtime briefing, IRC racing will begin on Thursday afternoon with 2 races. A maximum of 4 races on Friday and Saturday and finally 2 on Sunday.

Racecourse B will be from the Plym Yacht Club start line on the Mount Batten Breakwater and will host the SW YTC Southwest Championships. Race 1 will be the traditional 'Chris Moyse Pursuit Race', followed by round the cans racing on Saturday and Sunday.

Racecourse C will be south of the Breakwater and the venue for the J24 National Championships. A large entry is expected for this competitive One-Design class as their World Championships in 2025 are to be held here under the burgees of both the Saltash Sailing Club and the Plym Yacht Club.

RS 30th Anniversary

P Class Centenary to be celebrated in January
T Howse in P404. Photo by Gary Smith. Click on image to enlarge.

P Class Centenary Love them or hate them the P Class has been around for 100 years.

Designed by Harry Highet in 1920, the plans were presented to the Tauranga Yacht & Powerboat Club in January 1924 and were originally known as 'Taurangas'.

The uniquely New Zealand boat has evolved over the years from plank, gunter rigged, cotton sails, to the current Plywood and Fibreglass hulls, Carbon masts and foils, Dacron sails and aluminium booms.

The roll call of sailors of this class reads like a 'Who's Who' of NZ sailors and includes (but in no way limited to); Jimmy Gilpin, Robbie and Gary Denniston, John Moyes, Greg Palmer, Craig Gilbert, Dave Barnes, Peter Blake, Trevor Cox, Chris Dickson, Russel Coutts, Leslie Egnot, Jon Bilger, Barbara Kendall, Jo Aleh, Paul Snow-Hansen, Erica Dawson, Peter Burling, Jason and Thomas Saunders, Molly and Sam Meech, Blake McGlashan, Oli Stone, Bella Jenkins, Will Leech, William Mason and Nelsen Meacham.

The Coombes Johnston BMW 2024 Tanner and Tauranga Cups are being raced this year in Tauranga.

The 4th and 5th of January 2024 is the 80th Anniversary of the Tanner Cup with 21 entries.

This is one of only two interprovincial events still being sailed in NZ. The rules have changed to allow multiple entries for a Province, based on the number of entries in their respective trials. This has kept the event relevant and a special contest for the Class.

No Friday Issue, back in the New Year
Your humble narrator is taking the long weekend with family, some of whom had to work on Christmas (hospitals don't close for the holidays), others who volunteered to take the shifts for colleagues with small children. We're doing Second Christmas this weekend. Pretty good idea, that. Twice the eggnog and another round of wrapping paper and mimosas.

And a very Happy New Year for all those who follow the Gregorian calendar. Thank you for your readership, comments, letters and wildly offensive jokes in 2023. Back on Tuesday 2nd January...
