Pip Hare's Medallia runs aground off Cornwall
British ocean racer Pip Hare is now heading back to Poole aboard her IMOCA 60, Medallia, after the yacht ran aground off St Austell earlier this morning.

A full risk and damage assessment is expected to be carried out on Pip Hare's IMOCA 60, Medallia as soon as possible after the yacht ran aground onto a beach near St Austell in Cornwall earlier this morning.

The Vendée Globe sailor was heading back to her home port of Poole after finishing the Retour à La Base race when the incident happened at 0530 UTC.

In a later video, Pip said she had fallen asleep, and had not woken up, despite the many alarms on board Volunteers with Fowey RNLI assisted in refloating Medallia, and the operation was co-ordinated by the Coastguard.

Andrew 'Bart' Simpson: Iain Percy pays birthday tribute a decade after fatal accident
The sailing partner of an Olympian who died while training for the America's Cup 10 years ago has paid a birthday tribute to his friend.

Andrew Simpson, 36 from Sherborne, Dorset, was killed in an accident in San Francisco Bay in May 2013.

On what would have been his 47th birthday, fellow Olympian Iain Percy said he was a "great man and sailor".

Percy went on to help set up the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation to encourage young people in the sport.

In a video posted on social media on Sunday, he urged people to "raise a glass today in honour of the big man", who was also known as "Bart" after the character Bart Simpson, from the American animated series The Simpsons.

"For scores of people - the men and women, junior sailors - turned to him. The amount of people Bart had been the shoulder to cry on or offering a piece of advice.

"Him, as a person, was about really helping people, but not necessarily telling people he had been helping."

Behind the scenes with BSI Rigging #FollowTheRig
BSI Rigging Come with us behind the scenes at BSI Rigging as S/Y Beagle V's rigging has her 20+ year service.

Before the rig arrives at the factory, BSI prepares the boat log and the rig service history. Close communication with service agent, in this case RSB Rigging Solutions, shares feedback from the captain and if they have spotted anything during the rig pull.

Once the rig arrives, the pallet stack containing the rods, along with any coils and parts are unloaded and placed in a designated area. All the fittings, Kevlar stays and rods are meticulously unpacked measured, fittings removed and labelled so at any point both the fitting and the rod can be identified.

The measured bars are returned to the pallet stack and the fittings go into a designated box in the nominated Project Management area.

For reference, parts not requiring refurbishment, are stored until the service is complete. Those being refurbished are sent to washing and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).

NDT will highlight any flaws in the part not visible to the naked eye. BSI is pleased to report that in the instance of Beagle V and is the case with over 95% of the fittings that are returned, no flaws are found. Whilst some can be reused, as this is a 20+ year service, original parts will be replaced as a matter of safety and the life expectancy of the material and the part.

The parts are polished and placed back on their designated trolley ready for the reassembly stage.

Watch the team in action, and we hope you enjoy this insight into the work we do to help you maintain your rigging and protect the safety of those onboard.

In part two, see how new fittings are made, and how these are reassembled back onto the rod or Kevlar.

A big year (and for one so young) - A+T
A+T Many of the most successful yachts this summer have A+T instruments

A+T was only founded in 2015 and has now developed a complete range of extremely well engineered instruments, processors, autopilots and sensors. A high proportion of A+T's business is for upgrades to superyachts and systems for newbuilds. In the raceboat market A+T is also establishing itself as the weapon of choice for high-level instruments with some 30 per cent of yachts in the recent Maxi Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo using A+T. In this article we look at case studies of a few of these. Critical to A+T's development is feedback from the racing community and navigators where it specialises in turning around suggestions fast.

Leopard 3, the canting keel Farr 100ft maxi, has had a great season, taking the race record and 1st overall IRC in the Aegean 600 and then again line honours in the more recent Middle Sea Race with Will Best navigating and race captain Chris Sherlock.

Portland: Performance & Innovation Centre for sailing team
Plans have been unveiled for a new £9 million training base on Portland to create a new home for the British Sailing Team.

The permanent centre will replace the team's current leased units at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy at Osprey Quay - which has been its home for more than a decade and was famously the focus of the 2012 Sailing Olympics.

The project is currently fundraising and will be largely funded by private patronage, with contributions from UK Sport and the RYA.

Mark Robinson, RYA Performance Director, said: "For the British Sailing Team to continue its dominance in an increasingly challenging funding, competitive and regulatory environment it must double down on its strengths which are its intellectual capability and retained knowledge, depth of fleet and available sailing conditions in Weymouth and Portland.

"We now have an opportunity to create a legacy for the British Sailing Team as well as reaffirm the team's commitment to a home in Weymouth and Portland.

2024 12mR Worlds Preview at the Porquerolles Classic
Expertly filmed by French yachting photographer Gilles Martin-Raget, the idyllic sailing conditions of the Cote d' Azur were on full display at the 20th edition of the Porquerolles Classic held at the Yacht Club de Porquerolles (Hyeres, FRA) from June 8 - 11, 2023.

After sailing in the 2023 Porquerolles Classic, Kiwi Magic (KZ-7) Owner, Johan Blach Petersen reported:

Porquerolles is beautiful Island 5 nm south of Hyeres; it is a little paradise known for the most sun hours in Cote D'Azur. The Marina is huge and offers plenty of space for a regatta fleet of 70 boats. The little city is charming with small restaurants around the central square. The race organizers were very good, everything worked out well including the social activities. It is a superb place for the 12mR Worlds in 2024, and we can highly recommend other 12mRs to come - you will love it!
