Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkea) Wins Inaugural Retour A La Base
When he crossed the finish line off Lorient, Brittany at 16:03:48hrs UTC today (Saturday 9th December) to win the the inaugural 3,500 miles Retour a La Base, this afternoon French skipper Yoann Richomme marked himself as a sailor worth watching on next year's Vendée Globe solo non-stop race round the world.

Despite this new single-handed Transatlantic race from Martinique to France being Richomme's first ever solo sail on his recently launched IMOCA Paprec Arkéa, the 40 year old has led the 32 strong field for more than five days.

His elapsed time for the course is 9 days 3 minutes 48 seconds. His average speed on the theoretical course is 16.19kts, his actually sailed 4256.68nms at an average of 19.7kts.

Richomme could not find funding to compete on the 2020-2021 Vendée Globe but, left ashore, he immersed himself in the minutiae of the race and streamed his own popular weather focused commentary and analysis show. But now, in winning the first of the three single-handed Transatlantic races to be contested before the legendary solo race round the world starts early next November, Richomme can be considered among the favourites to win.

Armed with a new Koch-Finot Conq design which has proven a step ahead in fast downwind and reaching conditions, Richomme has largely been able to modulate his attack in recent days and finished just over 110 miles ahead of Jeremie Beyou (Charal)

Since leaving Martinique on Thursday 30th November on the 1000 miles climb north Richomme was in the lead group. But, when negotiating the north westerly fringes of the Azores anticyclone it was a neatly executed tack to the north east for a few hours which offered him more wind and a better course angle, allowing him to progressively climb away from the fleet.

Sam Goodchild wins 2023 IMOCA Globe Series title
British skipper Sam Goodchild (FOR THE PLANET) maintained his remarkably consistent form when he completed his first ever solo IMOCA race, the 3,500 nautical miles inaugural Retour a La Base from Martinique to Lorient in third place.

In taking his fourth consecutive third position, his fifth of the year, Goodchild wins the 2023 IMOCA Globe Series championship and is the first British skipper ever to do so.

Goodchild, who celebrated his 34th birthday in Martinique, crossed the finish line at 23:43:21hrs UTC this Saturday night (00:43:21 FR Sunday morning). His elapsed time is 9d 07h 43min 21s and he finishes 7hrs 39mins 33secs behind winner Yoann Richomme (Paprec-Arkéa) and 1h 49 min 50 secs behind second placed Jérémie Beyou (Charal)

Third place tonight on his first solo IMOCA event caps a dream 2023 season for the British racer who left his native Falmouth more than a dozen years ago to pursue his solo ocean racing career in France.

New Zealand Regains Grip On SailGP Season 4
New Zealand has regained its grip on Season 4 after claiming a dramatic, last minute victory over Australia and Canada in Dubai.

The three boat final was defined by tense match racing between Australia and Canada, before New Zealand split the course at Gate 2, leaving all three boats to come together at the final mark rounding.

Despite crossing the finish line in first place, a last minute penalty denied Canada victory. New Zealand and Australia crossed the finish line almost side by side, and a matter of meters handed the event title to the Kiwis.

It marks a dramatic comeback for Peter Burling's crew after a disappointing European season, cemented by the shocking collapse of the team's 29m wing.

Following the race, there was confusion about whether New Zealand or Australia had won.

Jimmy Spithill, who subbed in to drive Australia in place of permanent driver Tom Slingsby, said: "I don't think any of us knew what the result was - there were multiple complications at the last gate."

He went on to reveal that Dubai would be his last event competing as a SailGP athlete.

"I'm basically retiring after this event, clearly I'm going to be heavily involved with the Italian team - running it, but I'm at the stage now where I need to let some new talent come through."

He added that it was 'fitting' for his last SailGP race to be with the Australian team. "The last time I represented Australia was 23 years ago, to complete the circle and finish this last event, that's it from me."

The 10-strong F50 fleet will next meet for battle in Abu Dhabi on January 13-14 when the 7th event of Season 4 gets underway.

Sailing Artwork For Sale
Sailing Artwork For Sale Another one from your humble narrator's soon-to-be downsized art collection. This one another rarity, a poster from the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup, signed by the artist Gerard Courbouleix-Deneriaz, also known as Razzia.

Razzia is one of the last poster artists to remain in an era dominated by computer-generated images. He began his career in what can be called the golden age of poster art. Razzia is unique in that he still uses the same old style to make his posters. He continues to make posters from an original painting, as opposed to computer graphics.

His work evokes Art Deco. He is best known for his work for Louis Vuitton. A retrospective of his work was published in 2007. * Source: Wikipedia

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Races 5 and 6

18ft Skiffs A last minute decision by skipper Harry Price to sail his first 18ft skiff race of the season proved successful when he steered the Rag & Famish Hotel team to victory in both races of the NSW 18ft skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour today.

Price has been suffering from a bulging disc problem however all attempts to get a replacement for today failed, and he was forced to take to the harbour with two crew who had not previously sailed together with Price on The Rag, but it didn't matter as the team dominated the day's racing with two outstanding wins.

Marc Chapon and Finn Rodowicz have sailed together in the 18s but this was their first time together on The Rag.

Despite today's victories, after each team discards its worst performance, Yandoo (John Winning, Fang Warren, Lewis Brake) still holds the points lead in the series with just two more races to be sailed next Sunday to complete the championship.

Yandoo's net score is 8 points, followed by Rag & Famish Hotel on 12, Put Your Name Here on 16, Andoo on 18, Marine Outley 33 and Smeg (Nathan McNamara) on 35.

The Season Point Score section was sailed in conjunction with each of today's races and resulted in two wins for The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines team of Jacob Marks, Alex Marinelli and Matt Doyle.

It was an excellent result for the young team which had to compete with a smaller (#2) rig after gear breakage to their bigger (#1) rig forced a late change prior to today's racing.

Races 7 and 8 of the NSW Championship will be sailed next Sunday, December 17. Races 11 and 12 of the Season Point Score will be held in conjunction with the NSW Championship races. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Entries are open for The Superyacht Cup Palma 2024
The Superyacht Cup Palma organisers have opened the doors to entries for the 2024 event, while looking ahead to a busy and potentially memorable Mediterranean sailing season.

The Notice of Race is now available for the 19-22 June regatta, which will mark the 28th edition of Europe's longest running superyacht festival of sail.

A regular feature of the Mediterranean season, The Superyacht Cup Palma will take place just weeks ahead of the America's Cup in Barcelona - the last occasion the America's Cup came to the Med in Valencia in 2007 SYC welcomed its largest ever entry of 52 superyachts.

Among possible first-time entrants are the 39.4m Hoek Truly Classic 128 yacht Halekai, returning from a world cruise.

"It will be a debut at The Superyacht Cup Palma for Halekai," said captain James Saddington, "but I did the regatta back in 2019 on Kealoha so I know what a wonderful and enjoyable event it can be with the professional racing and informal social scene - it will be great to be back."

Meanwhile there is also the prospect of a return of the Swan 100 Onyx and regular attendee Velsheda, in what would be a third successive appearance for the celebrated J Class yacht. -- Daphne Morgan Barnicoat
