Richomme's getting richer, more downtime in the fleet
The seemingly relentless pace of Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkea) is ensuring the French leader of the Retour a La Base continues to add miles to his margin, extending all the time on the duo chasing him Jeremie Beyou (Charal) and Briton Sam Goodchild (FOR THE PLANET).

As they approach the Azores, just over 150 miles ahead of the pacemaker this evening, at 77 miles ahead Richomme has added a further 25 miles to his cushion since yesterday. And as they ride a new low pressure system there seems every chance that his margin will grow substantially.

Goodchild is locked in a close battle with Beyou who seems to have recovered from his technical issues which hampered him three days ago. The British skipper was pleased today to be heading towards the finish port of Lorient where the winner should arrive Saturday afternoon or evening.

Indeed gaps between skippers in the top ten are starting to open more, some of them due to the technical failures which are affecting more and more boats. Germany's Boris Herrmann (Malizia-Seaexplorer) was suffering from being unable to start his engine to generate power last night – it being not bright enough for solar generation and too fast for hydro-generators - and also blew off the cover of one of his cockpit drains which has meant he has had to spend many hours baling water from the cockpit of his IMOCA.

While Herrmann has held on to fifth he is now 70 miles behind fourth Sebastien Simon (Groupe Dubreuil). Simon is finally having a good race, sailing the The Ocean Race winning former 11th Hour Racing but he, too, lost time last night after suffering a head injury which he had to manage in close consultation with the race doctor.

An unsponsored team challenges for the NSW 18ft skiff Championship title
NSW 18ft skiff Championship The present leaderboard at the 2023-24 NSW 18ft skiff Championship is unclear because of a complicated protest, relating to last Sunday's Race 4, which is due to be held prior to next Sunday's two races in the series on Sydney Harbour.

One thing which is certain not to change, is that the unsponsored Put Your Name Here team will remain in second place just seven points behind Yandoo at the half way point in the championship.

Provisionally, subject to the protest result, Yandoo, skippered by John 'Woody' Winning, leads with a total of six points, followed by Put Your Name Here on 13, current Giltinan champion Andoo on 16, Rag & Famish Hotel on 22, Finport Finance 24 and Smeg on 30.

The young crew of Put Your Name Here, Kirk Mitchell (skipper), Andrew Stephenson (sheet) and Daniel Barnett (bow) came together in the 2022-23 season and performed so well in an ageing skiff that the Australian 18 Footers League provided them with a brand new hull and several new sails for the current season.

All three are friends, team mates and, at times, competitors who came through the classes together at Drummoyne SC, which probably explains their successful combination together in the demanding 18s.

Kirk and Andrew also teamed to win the Australian Cherub Championship while Daniel (from the famous Giltinan world championship-winning Barnett family) already had two seasons in the 18s with Kirk before Andrew joined them in 2022-23.

The team is playing down its success so far and is naturally looking towards the Giltinan World championship on Sydney Harbour in March.

The early forecast for Sunday afternoon is an 18 knots Southerly breeze which is similar to what had been predicted for last Sunday. If the prediction is correct, this time, and we don't get the damaging winds of last Sunday, we are in for a real treat as the racing throughout the fleet has been very close since the season began in October. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

12mR World Championship - Porquerolles
From 17 to 23 June 2024, Porquerolles Yacht Club (FRA) will be organising the 12mR World Championship, one of the most prestigious sailing events and a must for the class. A real America's Cup atmosphere will reign over this unprecedented international event in the harbour in Hyères. Around twenty 12mR boats are expected to take part, and more than 10 nations will be represented. A world championship title will be awarded at the end of the week's racing.

From 17 to 23 June, around twenty 12mR yachts and their top-level international crews will be moored in the port of Porquerolles, before battling it out non-stop for a week on the extraordinary waters off Hyères.

"For the crew of Nyala, the world championship will be the highlight and the goal of the season. We're already training with the whole crew. It's great that it's in Porquerolles, as these waters are really technical and I'm sure we're going to have some great races," said Brazilian Torben Grael, five-time Olympic medallist and tactician aboard the Italian 12mR Nyala owned by Patrizio Bertelli, CEO of Prada.

"In 2024, we're going to have a very good year for 12mR boats. In the Grand Prix category, in which I'm competing with French Kiss, we're going to have a great battle with boats from 1987 like Kiwi Magic, White Crusader and Kookaburra. All the owners and crews are highly motivated, and the location of the Bay of Hyères and Porquerolles is much appreciated by everyone, so we can't wait to meet up again," explained Marc Pajot, helmsman aboard French Kiss.

The event was again sailed off Waiake Beach, Torbay on Auckland's North Shore and saw over 360 young sailors from across the country slugging it out in 10 different classes.

Mason finished fourth overall in the 43-boat Starling open fleet - only four points behind the winner - but bagged the coveted award in honour of the late Kiwi yachting icon and environmental champion.

The Sir Peter Blake Regatta is one of the biggest small-boat regattas in the Southern Hemisphere, and the memorial trophy is awarded each year at the end of the competition to the sailor who has displayed not only racing success but leadership and competitive spirit across the season.

Celebrating Barbara's 100th

Yacht Barbara Launched in 1923 in England, the Camper & Nicholsons yacht was the protagonist of an enthralling season of events and regattas in the Mediterranean, offering the rare opportunity for a first-hand testimony to the glorious history of world yachting. After 6 months at sea, 3200 miles travelled and 18 events in four countries, the Florentine yachtowner Roberto Olivieri just concluded the sailing tour celebrating his boat's 100 years.

With 3200 miles in 6 months, attending 18 events and regattas in four countries, more than 150 passionate sailing friends taking turns on board, the 15 meter yawl of Florentine Roberto Olivieri celebrated her 100 years since the launch.

This successful and intense season was possible with the support of the supplier of renewable electricity for domestic consumers and SMEs, Frisbi Societa Benefit, committed to protecting the environment for a sustainable future.

Built in Gosport with teak and pitch-pine planking on a white oak frame based on a design by Charles Ernest Nicholson, one of the greatest naval designers in history, Barbara is one of the first examples of easy sailing, with a Bermudan rig with triangular sails and two masts, which allows navigation with a reduced crew.

Commissioned by Herbert Hines, she spent a few more years in England with the London sailor Harold Francis Edwards. In the late 1920s she was transferred to northern France by her new owner, Baron Amaury de la Grange, Senator and important aviator who established the French Aeronautical Institute (IAAG). Later she graces the waters of the French Riviera with Commander Jean de Vogue, whose family owned Moët & Chandon and created Dom Perignon brand in those years. Moored between Cannes and Monaco for several decades, Barbara thus hosted memorable sailing and unforgettable parties in the name of glamour. In 1982 she was the support boat for the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 24 days by windsurf which entered the Guinness Book of Records. After being abandoned at the end of the century in Spain, she was transferred to the Cantiere Navale Francesco del Carlo in Viareggio, where she was brought back to her former glory with a long restoration based on the original drawings from 1923 found at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, led by a team of expert professionals and with the precious support of the Vele Storiche Viareggio association, of which she is now the flag-bearer. Since her arrival in Italy, the command of Barbara has been entrusted to the Florentine skipper Vincenzo Zaccagni.
