Thibaut Vauchel-Camus and Quentin Vlamynck win Ocean Fifty Class
Thibault Vauchel-Camus and Quentin Vlamynck (Solidaires en Peloton) crossed the finish line of the Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre off Fort de France, Martinique at 19:07:47hrs local time (00:07:47hrs UTC Friday) to take first place on the Ocean Fifty race. Their elapsed time for the 4200 nautical miles course from Le Havre to Martinique via Lorient, passing the Cape Verde Ile de Sal to starboard is 11d 11h 22m 47s. Their average speed for the theoretical course is 16.54kts. They actually sailed 5432.58 nms at a speed of 19.78kts.

The French duo have led the race since just before Cape Finisterre and were the first to cross an intermediate finish line off Lorient after the racers were required to stop there less 24 hours after the race started from Le Havre on 29th November

Their victory is the biggest ocean racing success for the co-skipper pairing who teamed up this year on the 2020 launched Romaric Neyhousser design which was previously raced by Vlamynck until his team's long time sponsor stopped in March.

Vlamynck is an ex Mini650 racer who sailed in the colours of Lalou Roucayrol and was very much mentored by the former Ocean Fifty racer and boatbuilder. He won the Ocean Fifty Pro Sailing Tour two years ago and finished second on last year's Route du Rhum on this boat.

Vauchel-Camus, who grew up in Gaudeloupe, was runner up in 2019 in a three boat Ocean Fifty class on this race and was previously a top Class40 racer who won the Transat Bakerly and finished fourth on the last Transat Jacques Vabre in the Ocean Fifty class.

Widely tipped as pre-race favourites, their collective experience in the challenging Ocean Fifty multihulls especially showed during the very windy opening section to Lorient as well as preserving their well proven, well prepared boat through a major front on the Bay of Biscay which saw three of the six starters forced to abandon on the Bay of Biscay between 8th and 9th of November.

Slovenian photographer Samo Vidic, winner of the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award 2023
Samo Vidic Slovenian photographer Samo Vidic is the winner of the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image award 2023 thanks to a photo taken during a training session onboard Alinghi Red Bull Racing in Barcelona (ESP).

"To be on board of the AC75 foiling at 40+ knots as a photographer is a privilege unlike any other", explains Samo. "Capturing photos at high speed and strong g-forces becomes a real challenge. On the day this photo was taken, we had strong winds and a big swell, as well as incredible speed. I tried to capture these elements in the photo with a slow shutter and convey the adrenalin feeling of that day."

Samo Vidic was chosen as one of Alinghi Red Bull Racing's official photographers for the 37th America's Cup, and he immediately accepted the challenge. "Not many photographers get the chance to experience that!", he said.

French photographer Samuel Cade came second in the competition with a spectacular image of Charlie Dalin's IMOCA Macif during the AZIMUT 2023 Challenge.

Canadian Christian Bonin came third with a photo of 29ers dinghies sailing at the ABYC Seahorse Youth Regatta, showing a fascinating contrast of colours.

The Public Award, based on the number of public votes online, was won by Eugenia Bakunova (RUS), ahead of Brigi Török (HUN) and Ewan Lebourdais (FRA).

The Delegates Award, based on votes from METSTRADE's visitors in Amsterdam, was won by Craig Greenhill (AUS) ahead of Samuel Cade (FRA) and Martina Orsini (ITA).

A total of 144 photographers, representing 30 nationalities - a new record - took part in this year's Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Award.

Sailing Art for Sale
NY32 Print From your humble narrator's oversized art collection this rare, signed print. One of only 300 and signed by the late Olin Stephens in 2004. Serigraph on Coventry rag paper.

New York 32: Sail Plan, 1947.
Edition of 300: #49

In 1935, when the New York Yacht Club was looking for boats to replace the "Thirties" created by Herreshoff, their requirements included blue water seaworthiness in addition to grace and quickness. Olin Stephens submitted the winning design, and during the winter and spring of 1936, Henry B Nevins built 20 hulls in City Island, New York. The design called for oak frames (1 5/8" on 8" centers), heavy Philippine mahogany planking, and a low, solid deck house, all without sacrificing speed or beauty. Originally priced at $11,000, the New York 32's have stood the test of time, with about two-thirds of the original fleet still sailing. (Source: newyork32.org)

Brand new, never framed, still in original shipping tube from nearly 25 years ago.

Price is $400 and will include shipping to anywhere in the lower 48 US States. Will ship worldwide, contact me for a cost quote.

Saluting Antoine Koch
After 10 days at sea in this epic Transat Jacques Vabre-Normandie Le Havre, it is time to talk about Antoine Koch...who is holding third place on board For The Planet with Sam Goodchild, but is also co-designer of the only two boats in front of them - For People and Paprec Arkea.

It is a quite remarkable state of affairs, as the two Koch-Finot Conq boats sailed by Thomas Ruyant and Morgan Lagraviere and Yoann Richomme and Yann Elies respectively, lead Goodchild and Koch as the trio romp along in the tradewinds towards Martinique.

This morning For People had 1,192 nautical miles to go, with Paprec Arkea just 25 miles behind, and then a gap of 70 miles to For The Planet, the former LinkedOut. On board that boat we checked in with Koch to find out how he was enjoying what looks like "The Antoine Koch Show."

Koch noted that Jeremie Beyou and Franck Cammas's sixth-placed Charal, which led this race early on, may no longer be sailing at her full potential with some issues on board. While another key piece in the jigsaw at the top end of the IMOCA puzzle - Charlie Dalin's Macif Sante Prevoyance - is not on the racecourse. -- Ed Gorman's full editorial atimoca.org

109 Boats For The Dash
Click on image for photo gallery.

Draycote Dash The Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash is set to get this season's eight-event Selden SailJuice Winter Series off to a rip-roaring start, with a great weather forecast and a bumper entry of 109 boats representing 44 different dinghy, catamaran and keelboat classes. Ages of the competitors range from 11 to 76 years old.

Entry closed on Monday with 109 boats being the third highest entry for the Dash and not far off the record. After last winter's low entries amidst a cost-of-living crisis, is this a sign of confidence returning and a desire to get back racing through the winter months? With seven more events to come after the Draycote Dash is done, we'll see if the upswing is set to continue.

Biggest entry numbers are for the various types of ILCA singlehanders, with a total of 25 across the three rig sizes. There are also nine RS Aeros and a whole smattering of single entries across a range of singlehanders including a K1 keelboat helmed by Simon Hawkes.

This year's Dash has also attracted some of the big names of the UK dinghy racing scene including the team that continue to take out so many national titles between them, Tom Gillard and Rachael Gray who are racing the Scorpion at Draycote this weekend.

Others of note include former SailJuice Winter Series winner Michael Sims in a 505 crewed by Adam Kenney, national and world champion in multiple dinghy classes Sam Pascoe in a Musto Skiff, and RS200 stars Ben Whaley and Lorna Glen. RS200 National Champion Arran Holman is racing a 470 with Alex Hughes, and other champions racing their usual steeds are Jonathan Carter in the Vortex and Luke Fisher in the RS Vareo.

The following events are in the Selden SailJuice Winter Series 2023/24:

Get your Portsmouth Yardstick submissions in!
It's that time again! Help us ensure the 2024 PY numbers are as accurate as possible by submitting your data by Sunday 31 December.

The RYA is once again calling on clubs to submit their Portsmouth Yardstick data and help us ensure the numbers are as accurate as possible for 2024.

The Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system is run jointly by the RYA and its affiliated clubs to allow sailors to race different boats against each other fairly.

At the end of each year, clubs submit their results data to the RYA to be collated and analysed. The Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) numbers are then adjusted accordingly. The more data received, the more accurate the PY numbers will be.

This year's deadline for PY submissions is Sunday 31 December.

Club handicap and results officers can submit their data online.

The new Portsmouth Yardstick numbers will be released at the RYA Dinghy and Watersports Show on Saturday 24 February 2024.
