New leaders in IMOCA and Class40 as suspense heightens
Winners of the 2021 Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre IMOCA race Thomas Ruyant and Morgan Lagraviere (For People) returned to the front of what is proving to be an all consuming 2023 edition of the 3750 nautical miles IMOCA race from Le Havre to Martinique.

A few days ago theoretical computer modelling seemed to favour the feisty northerly course chosen by Switzerland's Justine Mettraux and her French co-skipper Julien Villion on Teamwork.net. But now current predictions suggest an almost exactly even outcome between the Swiss-French duo and whichever of the faster moving pairs emerge from the more southerly, downwind trade winds charge towards the French Antilles.

Mettraux and Villion are expected to sail the shorter distance to Martinique but a big proportion of it is upwind. This morning their course angle is not good as they feel the first effects of the passage of a low pressure system. But when they get to the other side of the low they will get a faster reaching angle more directly towards Martinique.

The weather situation is broadly similar for Class40. Their leaders have choices to climb north and use the same low pressure system or stay south and use the trade winds. Leaders yesterday Xavier Macaire and Pierre Leboucher (Groupe SNEF) are investing in a northwesterly course whilst the Italian Musa 40 Alla Grande PIRELLI sailed by Ambrogio Beccaria and Nico Andrieu leads again alongside Italian rivals IBSA, the Manuard designed Mach 40.5 sailed by Alberto Bona and Spanish ace Pablo Santurde del Arco.

Transatlantic Race Returns to Sailing Calendar for 2025
One of offshore racing's great adventures will return in 2025. The New York Yacht Club and the Royal Ocean Racing Club, in partnership with the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Storm Trysail Club, are proud to announce Transatlantic Race 2025, which will start from Newport, R.I., on June 18, 2025, and finish off Cowes, England.

The west-to-east Transatlantic Race was most recently run in 2011, 2015 and 2019. This slightly extended break has allowed the race to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the RORC as well as the next edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race and the return of the Admiral's Cup.

While the 2025 edition of the race will officially finish off the Isle of Wight, in the Solent, a timing gate will be established at the Lizard to preserve the Newport, R.I., to Lizard Point record, which is monitored by the World Sailing Speed Record Council. That record, currently 6d:22h:08m:02s, was set by George David's Rambler 100 in the 2011 race.

The NOR for the Transatlantic Race 2025 is online and registration is currently open. An early registration discount is available for all boats that enter by September 1, 2024.

GB's Anna Burnet and John Gimson win Nacra 17 European Championship
Great Britain's Anna Burnet and John Gimson have become European champions in the mixed Nacra 17 class.

The Tokyo 2020 silver medallists took an early lead at the regatta in Portugal but then fell down to third.

A strong performance on day five helped them back into top spot and they won after no racing was possible on the sixth day because of a lack of breeze.

"It was a bit of an anticlimax not getting any racing on the final day," said Burnet.

It is the second time the pair have won the European title, having also claimed victory in 2021.

"Where we've got to as a team now means we have the ability to debrief really well and quickly figure out what we need to do to get better. That's something we did well this regatta."

New documentary to stream in the USA on Max
The Warner Bros. Discovery production, "A Voyage of Discovery: The Ocean Race", is a three-part documentary following the inside story of the sailors who take on the challenge of The Ocean Race.

Released earlier this month on Eurosport, the documentary is available to stream on Max from November 15.

11th Hour Racing Team skipper Charlie Enright is one of four sailors the documentary turns its lens on as viewers get a chance to live the highs and lows of The Ocean Race with the people who know it best.

"Our name is going to be on The Ocean Race trophy and no one can take that away," Enright reflects in an interview after the finish of the Race. "It's the accomplishment. When you look back on it, the name is there, and that's all that matters. You've won this race or you haven't and now we're in that camp." "

A Voyage of Discovery: The Ocean Race" remains available for streaming across Eurosport and Discovery+ platforms in Europe and Asia and is now on Max in the USA.

Hexcel will continue to celebrate its 75th anniversary and highlight its latest developments for the Marine market at METSTRADE 2023 on November 15-17. Hexcel will showcase innovative advanced lightweight material technologies including new intermediate and high modulus fiber HexPly® M79 prepregs and present example high-performance superyacht and windship components developed by customers using Hexcel materials.

The new intermediate modulus prepreg combines the low temperature curing and simple processing of the DNV GL accredited HexPly M79 resin system with the market-leading stiffness of HexTow® IM2C fiber, creating a uniquely optimized composite material for highly loaded components. Originally developed to provide best-in-class performance for America's Cup and IMOCA hull and deck structures, the new combination minimizes structural deformation under load in parts such as rigs, foils, and other appendages.

For a high modulus solution, HexTow® HM54 fiber is also now available with the HexPly M79 resin system. The unique mechanical properties of HexTow HM54 fiber allow structural designers to achieve higher safety margins for both stiffness and strength critical applications. Both products can be manufactured with Hexcel G-Vent technology for out-of-autoclave processing, delivering a game-changing reduction in process time and cost without compromising mechanical performance. Hexcel will also display customer products that have benefited from the performance and processing gains provided by HexPly materials.

Following the successful completion in October of works on its most recent major sailing yacht refit project, a 56-metre Perini Navi sailing superyacht, the Zaandem-based shipyard Amsterdam Yacht Services has taken the opportunity to undertake some major renovations and upgrades to its facilities.

The sheer size of this iconic 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht meant that, while works were ongoing, the shipyard was required to demolish part of its sheds and add a temporary extension in order to accommodate her, with the superyacht being transported in and out of the shed by means of a SPMT (Self Propelled Motor Trolly).

Once the project was finished and successfully delivered to her experienced ownersteam, the temporary extension has been removed. The hall's walls which had been demolished have been covered with new special doors. This has now enabled a wider door opening of 12 metres as opposed to the previous 10 metres, thus also nodding towards future larger projects at AYS' facility.

Sicomin, a leading supplier of epoxy resin systems, is pleased to announce its latest partnership with Candela, the renowned Swedish electric foiling boat manufacturer. Sicomin will supply a complete package of epoxy resins and adhesives for Candela's latest ground-breaking project, the new P-12 foiling passenger shuttle.

Sicomin

Candela's innovative approach to sustainable boating has generated massive international attention, and its latest vessel, the Candela P-12, is no exception. The new, zero emission, 12 metre passenger shuttle has been conceived to enable higher journey frequencies and increase utilization across urban water transit networks.

A full carbon fibre and epoxy construction results in a low vessel weight that allows Candela to provide operators with capacity for 30 passengers and a range of up to 60 nautical miles at 25 knots. Intended to replace larger, slower, fossil-fuelled ships, the P-12 uses 80% less energy than a conventional ferry whilst producing no local emissions and removing the risk of fuel or oil spillages.
