Banque Populaire XI wins ULTIM race on 16th Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre
French duo Armel Le Cleac'h and Sebastien Josse sailing Maxi Banque Populaire XI crossed the finish line of the 16th edition of the Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre off Fort de France, Martinique at 18h19 local time (23h19 UTC) this Sunday evening to win the ULTIM division for 33m multihulls (subject to Jury verifications).

The biennial, double handed classic 'Coffee Route' Race - which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary - started from Le Havre, France on Sunday 29th October and took the five strong ULTIM class on a 7,500 miles course south to round Ascension Island before turning back northwards to skirt the South American coast and finish in Martinique.

The elapsed time for the Banque Populaire XI duo is 14 days 10 hours 14 minutes 50s. They sailed the theoretical course at an average speed of 21,66 knots.

They actually sailed 9263 nautical miles on the water at an average speed of 26,75 knots.

Banque Populaire XI has led since Ascension Island and was never overtaken since the most southerly mark of the course. When Le Cleac'h and Josse finished their nearest rivals, second placed SVR Lazartigue (Francois Gabart and Tom Laperche) were just over 180 nautical miles behind. On his seventh challenge it is the first time the 2016-17 Vendee Globe winner Le Cleach has triumphed on the Coffee Route race whilst Josse won the 2013 Multihull race as skipper of the MOD 70 Edmond de Rothschild, sailing with Charles Caudrelier. -- Andi Robertson

Patience is a virtue...in all classes
The big news today in the IMOCA class is the damage to Groupe Dubreuil whose mainsail was torn above third reef. Lying in second place Sébastien Simon and Spain's Iker Martinez will have to wait for an area of calms behind the front tomorrow morning to be able to carry out repairs.

They will then probably see Teamwork (Mettraux-Villion) make their getaway on the Northern route, which has now drawn some other competitors. freelance.com is leading this group of IMOCAs with daggerboards along with the British foiler Medallia (Pip Hare-Nick Bubb), but they will have their work cut out against Monnoyeur Duo for a job, which had to go back to Le Havre after the start, but has managed a remarkable comeback. Benjamin Ferré and Pierre Le Roy's IMOCA is by far the best performer in the daggerboard category.

After the front tomorrow an area of calms awaits those who decided to stay north and it is going to require a lot of skill to deal with another front on Wednesday, which is likely to be rougher with 40-knot winds and 4m high waves. It is only once they have overcome this hurdle that the IMOCAs in the North will be able to head further south to see what gains they have achieved.

Ocean Fifty: A clear leader in spotty trade winds
It looks less exciting in the Ocean Fifty class with Solidaires en Peloton keeping their two rivals in check with 1800 miles to go to the finish. Well positioned between the two chasing boats and the finish, Thibault Vauchel-Camus and Quentin Vlamynck have not made any mistakes, but will have to manage their efforts to the finish, as behind them, the two other Ocean Fifty multihulls are keeping up the pace and occasionally going on the attack. Viabilis was indeed by far the fastest of the three trimarans over the past few hours.

Class40: Amarris, alone against the world
The Class40 fleet split in two after the Canaries. Amarris (Nebout-Mahé) is in the lead on the starboard tack heading south at speed followed by a small group led by Alla Grande Pirelli (Beccaria-Andrieu). They hope to pick up stronger trade winds to the south of Morocco. With their gybes, the leader will meet up again with the Southerners, who will start to move westwards, so the rankings will become much clearer in the next 36 hours. The Class40 boats face ten days of upwind sailing. Preserving their boat is going to be as important as the precise route they follow towards Martinique.

All Change on Moving Day at the SSL Gold Cup Final Series in Gran Canaria
It started with intense excitement, and ended with a whimper, but even though the winds were light, the action was frenetic on day 3 of the SSL Gold Cup 1/32 Finals in Gran Canaria.

We saw comebacks, surprises, intrigue and tension in abundance, with the four boat format providing edge-of-the-seat, nail-biting viewing for the livestream spectators.

South Africa and Lithuania go into the double points race both in a powerful position, tied on 10 points, while Czech Republic have it all to do on 6 points. Barring a minor miracle, Oman are out of the running for a place in the 1/16 Round on 4 points.

Luca Rosetti Is The Overall Winner Of The La Boulangere Mini Transat
Since his victorious arrival in the second stage at 1:26 am (Paris time) last night, Luca Rosetti (998 - Race = Care) had no choice but to wait, watch in hand, for his direct competitors to cross the line with gaps large enough to make up for the delay he had accumulated in the first act to determine his final ranking. By midday this Sunday, the doubt finally lifted, and the sailor received confirmation (pending jury approval) of his victory in the 24th edition of La Boulangère Mini Transat in the Series category. The contract is fully fulfilled for the Italian, who becomes the eighth foreigner and the second representative of his country to win the event after the successful Ambrogio Beccaria.

In the Protos, two big favorites, Federico Waksman (1019 - Repremar - Shipping Agency Uruguay) and Carlos Manera Pascual (1081 - Xucla), finished first and second in Guadeloupe, and in the same order in the overall standings. The third place, however, remained contested until the final stretches, and while Marie Gendron (1050 - Lea Nature) completed the stage podium, she conceded that same position to Julien Letissier (1069 - Frerots Branchet) in the event standings (before the jury) by only 29 short minutes.

Cup Spy Nov 10: Swiss hit by rain squall, Kiwis enjoy summer's start, Gremlins hit Brits
Alinghi Red Bull Racing - AC40 - Day 60 - Jeddah - November 10, 2023. Photo by Alex Carabi / America's Cup Alinghi Red Bull Racing It was an early day of summer on the Hauraki Gulf, but a squally one in Jeddah. The Brits had a good session with their training boat T6 - until the electronic gremlins struck. The Kiwis were trialling their latest wing foil design on port, with a previous test version on the starboard foil arm.

What happened in the Cup - November 10, 2023:

Alinghi Red Bull Racing - sailed their two AC40s from Jeddah, venue for the next America's Cup Preliminary Regatta, and caught a back-hander from an unexpected 25kt rain squall.

Emirates Team New Zealand - sailed in the Hauraki Gulf, in a summer seabreeze, testing two wing foils on their AC40 converted to and LEQ12 test boat.

INEOS Britannia - The Brits were back on the water in their test boat/LEQ12 T6. They had another productive session, until they experienced some electronic gremlins and ended the session early.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - did not sail on Friday, but have sailed four days this week.

American Magic - American Magic rolled out their AC75 Patriot, on Tuesday, did some sailing on Thursday - but didn't sail on Friday.

Orient Express Racing Team - Their AC40 is en route to Jeddah.

All teams are/have shipped AC40s to Jeddah for the second Preliminary Event at the end of November.

18ft Skiffs Sponsors Race
Yandoo closes in on Smeg as the pair approach the wing mark. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs The Australian 18 Footers League took a step back into history on Sydney Harbour today when it staged a non-point score Sponsors' Race, with each competing skiff carrying a fourth hand representative of the boat's sponsor, and used the original Mark Foy handicap system where boats started individually on their designated handicap instead of the usual fleet starting as a group and being 'handicapped' throughout the race.

The race was sailed in a light easterly breeze which never got above 10knots and the first boat to cross the start line today (off a 10mins handicap), under the Mark Foy system, was also the first boat to cross the finish line after leading all the way on a gloomy, overcast harbour.

It was an excellent performance by the winning 18 Footers Bar & Restaurant team and gave all crew members, Hugo Stoner (skipper), Hugo Leeming and Hamish Vass, their first 18 footer victory since joining the fleet three seasons ago.

Joined in the boat for the day was Australian 18 Footers League CEO, Warren Sare, the team grabbed a big early lead and increased the margin continually throughout the course before scoring an impressive 4m11s victory.

While the race lacked the close fleet racing and lead changing we see regularly in the 3-buoys racing format, the race behind the winner amongst the next three boats, which all started off a 6mins. handicap, produced a good battle behind the winner.

Marine Outlet (Micah Lane, Cam Gundy, Charlie Gundy) finished in second place, 30s ahead of The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Jacob Marks, Alex Marinelli, Matt Doyle), with last week's winner Smeg (Nathan McNamara) another 29s back in fourth place.

The Kitchen Maker (Lachlan Steel) finished in fifth place with Noakes Red (Bec Hancock) rounding out the top six placings with her team's best performance of the season so far.

Racing goes back to normal next Sunday ((November 19) when the League will conduct the final race of the six-race Spring Championship series for the Yandoo Trophy. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Building Sustainable Sails - How OneSails Achieve It
We head to Italy to find out how OneSails build sails and why they claim that their 4T process is the future for sustainable sailmaking. Few have seen inside their production facilities in Italy let alone been allowed to take a camera inside. Matt Sheahan spent two days looking closely at the way in which the sails are made and listening to why OneSails believe they are at the leading edge when it comes to building sustainable sails.

And having shown us the process, we then headed out onto the water to see the sails in action.
