44Cup Alcaidesa Marina - Day 1: Blowing Monkeys Off Rocks
On some days conditions can be marginal for a committee to lay on yacht racing. Today at the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina there was nothing marginal about the wind strength on the Bay of Gibraltar. Despite the first warning signal for the opening day of competition being brought forward by an hour to 1100 CEST, already at 1000 conditions were exceeding the maximum 25 knot limit for RC44 racing to take place. The decision to cancel racing for the day was disappointing, but an easy one.

Fortunately prospects for tomorrow are much better with 18-20 knots forecast, when the race committee will attempt to make up the schedule.

Aside from the wind, banter on the dock is turning to rugby with Argentina and New Zealand playing on Friday night and England v South Africa on Saturday and all these nations represented on the 44Cup. Irish crews are still being reminded repeatedly of their defeat last Saturday to New Zealand.

Lisa R wins Yachting Malta Coastal Race
The Yachting Malta Coastal Race took place in superb conditions today, 19 October. A building breeze and warm sunshine providing a perfect opportunity to get race ready for the forthcoming Rolex Middle Sea Race, which starts on Saturday, 21 October.

After IRC time correction the overall winner by just 53 seconds was Giovanni Di Vincenzo's Ker 46 Lisa R from Italy competing in IRC 3. Second overall and winner of IRC 2 was Francois Bopp's Swiss Farr 52 Chocolate 3, which in turn was a mere five seconds ahead of the United States entry, Warrior Won. Class winners include Valentin Oeru's Swan 42 Lion's Story from Romania (IRC 4), Jonathan Gambin's Maltese Dufour 44 Ton Ton Laferla (IRC 5), and Andrew Agius Delicata's Reflex 38 Vivace also from Malta (IRC 6).

In assessing the race, Bertone felt there had been really tough competition. "We had a good downwind leg to Comino, but made a small mistake on the way back. That was enough for the competition to close in and create such a tight finish," continued Bertone. "Maybe we were a bit lucky to hold on to the win by just a few seconds, but sometimes you need that bit of fortune to succeed."

Chris Sheehan's PAC52 Warrior Won took line honours, completing the 29 mile course in an elapsed time of 3 hours 24 minutes and 41 seconds.

The 44th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race starts from Grand Harbour, Valletta on Saturday, 21 October. Live Coverage begins at 1030 CEST, with English commentary streamed on Facebook and YouTube and supported by Yachting Malta. Maltese language commentary will be broadcast on TVM.

Cup Spy : Dive Dive Dive
Five of the six America's Cup Challengers American Magic, Alinghi Red Bull Racing and Emirates Team NZ, were reported as sailing on Wednesday. Two others, Orient Express Racing Team and INEOS Britannia were spotted in AC37Recon images sailing in fresh conditions off Barcelona.

Wednesday is Day 7 of the race schedule for the 2024 America's Cup. Today was the roughest day yet in the parallel 2024 America's Cup schedule. However Thursday and Friday are forecast to be even worse, and no teams are expected to sail for the next couple of days.

Typically Emirates Team New Zealand use the parallel period of the America's Cup to drop into campaign mode as a test of shore and sailing crew.

What happened in the Cup - October 18, 2023:

- Emirates Team New Zealand sailed their AC75, running through another two hour training session - claiming to be testing a couple of unspecified new features, but mostly it is guessed to be more about performance data capture with the AC75 sailing in a seaway of one metre. Peter Burling gave his view of the session in this report.

- American Magic sailed their two AC40s, again in development testing continuing with flap changes to their test wingfoils and using one design rigs. Terry Hutchinson gave his overview of the struggles of sailing AC40s in these conditions, when the American Magic could but look enviously over the same course, and see Emirates Team NZ sailing the bigger AC75 with relative ease in the sea conditions. However the American team is focused on development testing in their AC40/LEQ12s, while the Kiwis have a focus on data collection and sailing technique.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed a three hour sailing session, with a report of the Swiss just averting a capsize when the rudder lifted clear of the water. Otherwise the day was a test of sailing technique in top end conditions for the Swiss.

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - No report.

- INEOS Britannia - Their test boat T6 is still in the shed after the catastrophic destruction of their rudder and rudder assembly during a towing session. They were again sailing alone in their AC40 One Design, without the company of an AC37 Joint Recon team - so no video/images or report.

- Orient Express Racing Team - sailed alone in their AC40 One Design, without the company of an AC37 Joint Recon team - so no video/images or report.

Sailing World on Water
This is your weekly global sailing highlights show, the World on Water, October 20, 2023.

If you look through the list of skippers and co-skippers for the Transat Jacques Vabre, Normandy Le Harve 2023, you will discover that the biggest representation of any nation in the race, apart from France, is from Britain.

Eight British sailors will take part in the biennial double-handed classic which starts from Le Harve on October 29th. We feature Sam Goodchild who is sailing the former super IMOCA "Linkedin" which he rebranded "For THe Planet." Designed by Guillaume Verdier it was built in 2019, in Italy.

In a dramatic turn of events overnight, the Finnish yacht Spirit of Helsinki skippered by Jussi Paavoseppa grabbed the number one spot for the first time from the legendary Pen Duick VI. With just 450 nm to Cape Town, the Ocean Globe Race finish is too close to call. With the four yachts, Spirit of Helsinki, Pen Duick VI, Translated 9, and Maiden all within one hundred miles of each other it's all to play for.

Global Solo Challenge
This past week in A Coruna was marked by intense rains and strong winds, weather conditions that were quite unfavorable for finalizing the last details on the boats' preparations. The skippers are however coming together in an increasingly solid and cohesive community, thanks to the bonds of friendship that are created on the dock of Marina Coruña ahead of their great adventure. The competitors are truly embracing the spirit of the Global Solo Challenge, which also aims to unite and give the opportunity for people from many different nationalities, eleven in this first edition, to realize a shared dream of sailing around the world solo. They will navigate the approximately 26,000 miles of the route alone, but this group spirit will accompany and motivate them in their adventure, because, as an African proverb says, "alone we go faster, but together we go further."

The next departure is scheduled for October 21st, and the three competitors setting sail are Pavlin Nadvorni on the Farr45 Espresso Martini, Ari Kansakoski aboard the Class40 ZEROChallenge, and William McBrien on the Class40 Phoenix.

Boats are grouped by performance characteristics and set off in successive departures over 3 months with the first start on August 26, 2023.

Once at sea, there are no classes. All boats will be sailing the same event. The faster boats will have to try to catch up with the slower boats, the pursuit factor creating competitive interest aboard and a fascinating event for the public and sponsors.

The first boat to cross the finish line wins. The performance differential between the boats is taken into account in staggering the departures, eliminating the need to calculate corrected times. -- Margherita Pelaschier / Global Solo Challenge

The Gender Design Survey aims to gather baseline data to start the discussion whether the design of sailing equipment is impacting the development of greater gender diversity.

The World Sailing Trust's Strategic Review into Women in Sailing put forward several recommendations, amongst them a call to industry to bring together key designers, brands and manufacturers to develop best practice guidance for gender equal design that supports increased women and girls' participation in sailing.

The starting point to develop this best practice guidance is to ensure that there is supporting data to highlight if and where there are issues, and how the industry should best address them from a practical and commercial standpoint.

Gender inclusive design in sport reinforces fairness, inclusivity, and safety for all participants and, as one of the most equipment heavy sports, sailing should not be an exception. Equipment should be designed to ensure that there is fair competition, it is inclusive and respective and provides a safe environment for athletes of all genders to participate and compete on a level playing field.
