30 Years On... the Transat Jacques Vabre
Nearly 200 sailors expected for the 30th anniversary of the coffee route! In october 2023, the Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary in Le Havre before heading to Martinique, where the finish of what is also called the coffee route will take place for the second consecutive time. An anniversary that nearly 100 tandems in the four open classes have already marked on their agenda: Imoca, ocean fifty, ultim and class40.

For this record edition, 95 boats will compete on the water .

In order to guarantee above all their safety and a clear line crossing , 4 separate departures, per class, will be given. They will each be spaced at least 10 minutes apart.

The starting line will be the same for everyone. It will be adapted to the IMOCA fleet which is the largest and which will necessarily suit the number of boats in other classes.

In order, the ULTIMs will leave first, followed by the Ocean Fifty, then the IMOCAs and finally the Class40s.

Departure times on Sunday October 29:
ULTIM: 1:05 p.m.
Ocean Fifty: 1:17 p.m.
IMOCA: 1:29 p.m.
Class40: 1:41 p.m.

Sydney to Auckland Ocean Race
Three vessels are home in the inaugural Sydney to Auckland Race. First home for the Line Honours prize was Geoff Hill's 72-footer, Antipodes. As such, they set the race record for the course at 5:03:37:57.

Hill spoke from the dockside, "We lost both masthead kite halyards, meaning we only had a fractional A6 built for Hobart duties left to us. So we went from, say doing 12 knots, down to just 10 knots. Frantic did very well and came up to within two or three miles of us. It was pretty intense sailing from both camps."

Mick Martin's early TP52, Frantic, was next home, and that crew have won the Sir Lipton Cup Perpetual Trophy. With an elapsed time of 5:04:53:19, just over an hour behind the Line Honours Winner, the smaller vessel also had the joy of finishing in the last light of the day. Both yachts are from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.

Third across the line was James Irvine's Rogers 46, Mayfair, from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. Mayfair had an elapsed time of 5:12:59:21, which meant they finished in the dark, at 0159hrs this morning. They also sailed the shortest course, at some 1314nm to a 1250nm track, which is totally brilliant.

It means both the only two-handed entry, Intiy, with Marc Depret and George Martin representing the host club (Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club), and Graham Barrett's Bavaria 51, Painkiller, representing the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, are the craft that remain at sea.

Cup Spy : Four teams sail on Wednesday again in superb foiling conditions
Four America's Cup Challengers sailed on Wednesday in outstanding conditions for sailing foiling monohulls of both the AC75 and AC40 genre.

What happened in the Cup - October 11, 2023:

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - sailed out of Barcelona in their AC40OD. While we have video and an interview, there is no report.

- INEOS Britannia - Did not sail - their test boat T6 is still in the shed after the catastrophic destruction of their rudder and rudder assembly during a towing session.

- Emirates Team New Zealand sailed their AC75, turning in an excellent dry tack/gybe percentage of 1.6% - only doing one "touch and go" of the 61 tacks/gybes performed in the session

- American Magic sailed their two AC40s, again in development testing - with test wingfoils and one design rigs.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed their AC75 in a session apparently more aimed at sailing style and technique, trying different options.

- Orient Express Racing Team - no report

Kraken III triumphs and Andoo Comanche bests its own record in 2023 Tollgate Islands Race
In the 260 nautical mile 2023 Tollgate Islands Race, Rob Gough and John Saul showed all their versatility and tactical skills to take Overall IRC honours in their Jeanneau Sunfast 3300 Kraken III against a highly competitive fleet of both fully-crewed and two-handed teams.

As the only interstate entry, the two Tasmanians representing the Derwent Sailing Squadron in Hobart may not have had as much experience in the coastal waters between Sydney and Batemans Bay as other competitors but are highly experienced two-handed practitioners who have formed a solid bond sailing together over the years. Perhaps best remembered for winning Two-Handed Line Honours on their Marc Lombard designed Akilaria RC2 Sidewinder in the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart, both of Kraken III's owners have competed in several Hobarts and Rob is a former windsurfing and Moth World Champion.

From the start on Sydney Harbour at 1900hrs on Friday, the pair looked strong as they pushed down the eastern shore in a battle with another Sunfast 3300 Tumbleweed to be one of the first of the eleven two-handed boats out the Heads. From there, they were always in contention - their greatest concern only whether they could maintain a highly-placed finish Overall as others succumbed to the vagaries of the inconsistent and weakening breeze.

They were the eighth boat across the line in Watsons Bay after Andoo Comanche, URM Group, Smuggler, Sticky, Highly Sprung, Lightning and White Noise - arriving at 0514hrs on Sunday for a corrected time of 01:10:55:26, bettering the 100-footer Andoo Comanche's time by almost an hour.

The 2023 Tollgate Islands Race was a solid hit-out for competitors and an opportunity to test crews and set-ups ahead of the final three races in the 2023/24 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore. The upcoming fourth race will be the 83nm Bird Island Race to be held on Saturday 11 November; the penultimate fifth race, the 172nm Cabbage Tree Island Race starting on Friday evening 1 December. This race also doubles as the opening passage race for the 2023 Australian Maxi Championship for eligible boats over 60-feet in length.

The final race in the Pointscore is the 78th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race which will start on Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day, Tuesday 26 December.

Survey shows striking legacy of Operation Dynamo on the seabed off Dunkirk
Between 25 September and 8 October, the French marine heritage agency, Drassm - in partnership with Historic England - surveyed 30 wrecks sunk during Operation Dynamo. The survey shows the position, characteristics and condition of each wreck in remarkable detail. Seeing these wrecks in such detail for the first time is a powerful reminder of the scale and human cost of the evacuation.

The operation was led by Drassm archaeologists Cecile Sauvage and Claire Destanque aboard a Drassm research vessel - the Andre Malraux - captained by Fabien Gereux from Bourbon Offshore Surf. Drassm geophysicist Alexis Rochat was joined by a UK geophysicist, Mark James of MSDS Marine, commissioned by Historic England for this role. The survey is the first collaboration between Drassm and Historic England and provides essential information for researching and managing these wrecks in future.

Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive of Historic England, said: "It is very moving to see new details emerge from 30 shipwrecks linked to Operation Dynamo for the first time since the events at Dunkirk during the Second World War. We are pleased that a geophysicist from the UK, commissioned by Historic England, has been integral to the survey that has successfully captured these details alongside Drassm's incredible team of scientists. The results give us a striking insight into our shared heritage that still lies beneath the waters off Dunkirk."
