Sail GP: United States overcomes adversity to take remarkable first win of the season
Cadiz-Andalucia: Jimmy Spithill and the United States claimed an emotional and remarkable first win of SailGP Season 4 at the Spain Sail Grand Prix in Cádiz, Andalucía. Having lost flight controller Hans Henken to injury in Taranto, and after scraping into the final after a huge New Zealand error, the United States produced a stunning race to win the fifth event.

Nicolai Sehested's ROCKWOOL Denmark SailGP Team was undoubtedly the favorite for a historic first ever SailGP victory after dominating wins in races four and five - however the Danes got caught in a battle with Tom Slingsby's Australia. That allowed Spithill and the United States, with Taylor Canfield coming in as flight controller after Henken's unfortunate injury, to pounce and never look back.

Third for Slingsby's Australia once again demonstrates the team's consistency - and extends its lead at the top of the overall championship. The agonizing wait for an event win in Season 4 continues for the triple SailGP winners.

Season 4 of SailGP now heads to the United Arab Emirates for its next two events, starting with the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix presented by P&O Marinas on December 9-10. For details and tickets head to SailGP.com/Dubai

ClubSwan Racing signs off the 2023 season on a high
Photo by Max Ranchi, www.maxranchi.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

ClubSwan Close and competitive racing down to the wire was the hallmark of the Swan One Design Worlds and the first ever Swan Med Regatta-The Tuscany Challenge as the 2023 ClubSwan Racing season concluded in dramatic fashion today.

Scarlino and the magnificent Tuscan coastline was the setting for the finale which saw the Swan One Design and Rating fleets racing simultaneously and sharing a base in the impressive Marina di Scarlino, which also hosted the immersive Nautor Swan Experience throughout the week.

With sailors from 25 countries racing aboard the 36 yachts competing across the fleets, it was also appropriate that The Nations League 2023 was to be decided in these sparkling Tuscan waters following a season long contest that began in Croatia back in April.

In the One Design overall season standings Pedro Vaquer Comas' Nadir (ESP) was confirmed as the 2023 winner in the ClubSwan 42 class, G Spot prevailed in the ClubSwan 36 contest, and Hatari clinched victory in the ClubSwan 50s.

18ft Skiffs Spring Championship, Race 2
Race to the wing mark on lap one. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs The Lazarus team of Tom Cunich, Marc Chapon and Finn Rodowicz produced a great all-round performance in a tightly-bunched race to win Race 2 of the Spring 18ft skiff Championship and Alf Beashel Memorial Trophy on Sydney Harbour today.

In a race which produced numerous lead changes and continual positional changes throughout the entire fleet, the young Lazarus team had to fight hard to defeat an equally impressive The Kitchen Maker (Lachlan Steel, Jerome Watts, Ben Kirkby) by just 11s, with Smeg (Nathan McNamara, Jed Cruikshank, Jack Taylor) another 33s back in this place.

Racing was even closer behind the podium teams as only 25s separated the next four boats.

Race 1 of the Club Championship will be sailed next Sunday, October 22. Race 3 of the Spring Championship and Race 3 of the Season Point Score will be sailed in conjunction with the Club Championship. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Volvo China Coast Regatta 2023
The north easterly monsoon finally arrived bringing the most ideal sailing conditions Hong Kong could offer for the final day of the Volvo China Coast Regatta. The Race Management team saw 8 to 10kts of breeze at the race area South East of Lamma Island.

All IRC racer divisions were sent on two windward/leeward courses and one island course while the PHS division was given one windward/leeward followed by an island course of 16.5nm taking them around Waglan and Sung Kong before finishing off of Stanley.

At the end of three days of racing and having completed their scheduled seven races, all IRC divisions enjoyed one discard. Noel Chan's Rampage 88 took five bullets holding strong on to their 1st place overall in IRC Racer 0 division. Dominic Law's Happy Go took the win in the final Island courses and earned themselves a 2nd place and the Philippines entry, Emerson Villena's Standard Insurance Centennial 3, came back strong to take 3rd place overall.

In the IRC Racer 1 division, William Liu's Seawolf won all three of their races today and walked away with 1st place overall in the division. Marcel Liedts' Zannekin was only 0.5 points behind in 2nd place followed by Bo Wu and Kiki XinQi Lu's Unicorn in 3rd.

The standings for IRC Racer 2 remained the same as they have been since the start; Nick Burns' King 40 Witchcraft won all seven races giving him a convincing win overall win in the division. Andrew Taylor and Denis Martinet's Cape 31 Capitano and David Kong's Cape 31 Out of Africa was fighting neck to neck today. They were both tied at 16 points but after a countback, Capitano took second overall.

For the IRC Racer 3 division, although Nick Southward's Admiralty Harbour Whiskey Jack took the win in today's final Island Race, Andrew Pidden's Juice were still five points ahead, giving them the overall win. Henning Muller's Zesst got third overall.

In the PHS division, Johnson Yuen's Zoe took the trophy with two bullets with Carl Wilkinson's Lisa Elaine in second place followed by Patrick Kwan's DBX2.

Carlton Pinheiro Lecture: "Miss Winifred Sutton and the Siren of the Solent: IYRS's WEE WINN Replica"
Presented by Warren Barker

This lecture is dedicated to the late Carlton Pinheiro, Museum curator

Miss Winifred Sutton would have every right to be miffed. After all it was she who took on the fleet of half raters racing in the Solent in 1892 and proceeded to win 21 out of 22 starts. Yet the yachting fraternity seems far more interested in the instrument of her success, the Herreshoff fin keeler Wee Winn, than in her racing achievements. To add to the proverbial insult, there are even those nay sayers that insist on attributing her wins to her male crew. If there be any historical consolation for Miss Sutton it might lie in the fact that she thrust the name Herreshoff into the Isle of Wight limelight through her ability as yachtswoman and that beautiful little racer was saved from the burn pile due to her achievements. Inspiring in form and fast in function Wee Winn has influenced the designs of Uffa Fox and inspired the modern reproduction, "Miss Winifred," that now plies her home waters. With the original restored and at home in Bristol, Rhode Island, it was only a matter of time before Miss Sutton's seductive racer inspired a second build on Narragansett Bay.

The IYRS replica of Miss Winifred Sutton's Wee Winn was built during the academic year of 2018-19. Though the original existed, her delicate scantlings and condition precluded the usual forensic assault. Bulkheads obscured crucial details and the team certainly could not poke her with anything sharp. Set up on the Herreshoff Museum floor, Wee Winn was as tantalizing in her looks as she was in the mystery of how she was built. Of course, out came the camera and the ensuing documentation takes you through the build with all its hows, whys, and maybes as the team pushed ahead with the replica.

Launched in June of 2019, the IYRS version of Wee Winn touched the water a celebration; a celebration of her pedigree, her intrinsic beauty, and the drive and determination of her builders. Skill, care, and collaboration brought the project to fruition. Though we still hold Miss Winifred Sutton's boat on a pedestal, these recreations will continue to celebrate the woman who made her famous. Hand on the helm, in full Victorian regalia, she brought home the inspiration and the silver.

The Yachting Malta Coastal Race: Setting the Tone for the Rolex Middle Sea Race
Yachting Malta, a dedicated advocate for the yachting industry, has reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the annual Yachting Malta Coastal Race, often referred to as the "warm-up" to the Rolex Middle Sea Race. 2023 marks 8 years of support for the race which underlines Yachting Malta's ongoing dedication to sailing and reinforces their position as a vital contributor to the yachting community.

This year's race has already attracted a fleet of over 40 yachts, representing some 15 countries. Störtebekker from Germany, Warrior Won and Pyewacket 70 from the USA, Jackknife from the United Kingdom and Marina Rubicón / X-Odessa from Montenegro are just some of the boats which will be experiencing Maltese waters for the first time. Francois Bopp's Chocolate 3 from Switzerland is taking part again, having finished on the podium last year. George Greer's American entry Kiboko Tatu is another who found last year's participation beneficial and rewarding. French entry Daguet-Corum 3 took part in 2021, as did Andraz Szép's Knyaz and Thierry Deseine's Leu from France. Once experienced, it is hard to shake the attractions of sailing in warm water under blue sky in October.

Maltese success in this race has been nothing short of remarkable. The event has seen local teams consistently shine, making their presence felt on the international sailing stage – the Podesta siblings' Elusive 2 has been the most prolific team to make it to the Yachting Malta Coastal Race podium, winning the race twice (2016, 2020), and featuring regularly in the top three places for the past five years. Other boats etching their name on the winners' trophy were the Ripards' Calypso (2022) and Aaron Gatt Floridia's Otra Vez (2015), whilst Jonathan Gambin's Ton Ton Laferla placed second in 2022, Nils Lindeman's Xpedite and Josef Schultheis' Xp-Act placed third in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

The Yachting Malta Coastal Race will start from Marsamxett Harbour at 10.00 CEST on Wednesday 18 October.

Pablo Santurde Del Arco, The Teammate Who Seems To Make The Winning Difference
In fifteen years Pablo Santurde del Arco has become one of the real heavyweights of Class40. In 32 races he has scored no fewer than 28 podiums, including 17 victories! That is a unique record for a sailor who has always sailed as part of a crew or as a co-skipper in a duo set up. That, now makes him the most sought-after co-skipper on the circuit. Here we profile the ideal co-skipper two weeks ahead of the Transat Jacques Vabre, which he is racing this year with Alberto Bona (IBSA).

There is a joke on the pontoon which speaks volumes. For several years Class40 ravers have been thinking about creating a prize for the best co-skipper, an award which would recognize this very special role over double-handed seasons. And these sailors have already found its name: the Trophée Pablo.

So it is a bit of an understatement to say that 36 year old Pablo Santurde del Arco has become the sailor everyone wants to sail with. Italian Alberto Bona made no mistake recruiting him to race with him this season. "With Pablo, everything is simple. He's the opposite of a mercenary who only shows up to race. When he joins a project, he's in there, 100% for everything, and he's good at everything," sums up the Italian. Aboard IBSA, together they won the Caribbean 600, then the Les Sables-Horta this summer. Now at a couple of weeks before his fourth Transat Jacques Vabre, looking at his previous record - 2nd in 2013, 3rd in 2017, winner in 2019 - the name of Pablo Santurde alone sets the duo among the favorites for this 16th edition.

However, "Pablito" - a native of Santander - discovered the first pleasures of sailing solo.
