Wallyno wins Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez class with a day to spare

Saint-Tropez While in some classes the victors are now close to being decided going into tomorrow's last race for the 39 maxi yachts at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, more light conditions off the Cote d'Azur produced some new winners today.

In the southerly breeze, the race once again set sail from Pampelonne Bay, but with the race committee, including the International Maxi Association's own Ariane Mainemare, sending the bigger maxi classes north towards Frejus while the leeward mark for Maxi C and D was further west off Issambres, both groups ultimately finishing in the Golfe de Saint-Tropez.

However decisive is the situation in Maxi C where winning with a day to spare is International Maxi Association President Benoît de Froidmont and his 60ft Wallyno who have sewn-up their result, the only Maxi still racing with an unblemished four bullet scoreline.

Winning on the water today was Chris Flowers' 100ft Galateia, which finished second 1 minutes 10 seconds behind Deep Blue under IRC corrected time, despite having been locked in combat with Karel Komarek's similarly-sized V (ex-Tango) for much of the race. "We were glued together – super close," observed Galateia tactician Murray Jones.

Friday's final day of racing for the maxis will set sail at 1200 with a forecast that is similarly light but sailable. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Gianmarco Piovanetti solidified his lead on day two of the RenaissanceRe Junior Gold Cup in the Great Sound on Thursday.
The Puerto Rican sailor won three of the four races contested in blustery conditions to stretch his advantage from two to 20 points after discarding his worst score to date (sixth) in the opening race of the 13-race series.

Moving up to second was Mariana Pinto, of Portugal, who finished second among the female sailors and 28th overall at this year's International Optimist World Championships in Spain in June.

Also on the move was Denmark's Frederick Hastrup, who jumped six spots from ninth to third, a farther point adrift of the leader.

The lead among the local fleet swapped hands with Nina Gotfredsen replacing national champion Miguel Power at the summit.

Cup Spy Oct 3: AC75 teams get vital light air testing session at Barcelona
Two teams, Emirates Team New Zealand and Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed their AC75s off Barcelona in light airs.

The British team was also sailing in their AC40 One Design, unfortunately there is no coverage of AC40s sailing in One Design mode by the AC37 Joint Recon Team.

Wind strength measured by the nowcasting at Port Olimpic adjacent to the America's Cup course showed the winds building to 6kts at 1400hrs before easing and then building back to 9kts around 1800hrs. Recordings from the AC37 Joint Recon Team with the Kiwi team recorded winds of 6kts increasing to 8-9kts at 1600hrs from SSE (120degrees), before fading.

The wind limit for racing is 6.5kts measured on a 30 sec rolling average measure from 9mins to 4mins before the start. Takeoff wind speed for an AC75 to get foilborne is reckoned to be in the 6-7kt range. Of course, wind shear can affect wind strengths above sea level, and AC75s can take off in winds that appear to be lighter at sea level.

It would seem likely that the 2024 America's Cup will be sailed in light airs - requiring the teams to have confidence in their ability to start foiling in winds at the bottom end of the range, and to be able to remain foiling during tacks and gybes while remaining foil-borne, if the winds drop below the 6.5kts test at pre-start.

Pressure On To Reach Cape Town for Leg 2 Of McIntyre Ocean Globe
With seven yachts across the equator and making steady progress towards Cape Town, it's the tailenders that's cause for nail-biting at the McIntyre Ocean Globe Race head office. Godspeed USA (01) and Explorer AU (08) are under increasing pressure to reach Cape Town for the start of Leg 2, Cape Town to Auckland, on November 5th.

The OGR Notice of Race requires yachts to have a mandatory minimum four-day stopover in port meaning they need to arrive into Cape Town by 14:00 local time on November 1st to ensure starting Leg 2 with the rest of the fleet. This now seems unlikely.

The middle pack including Sterna SA (42), White Shadow ESP (17), Galiana WithSecure FI (06) might have thought they'd escaped the clutches of the doldrums, but still have some fluky winds to contend with.

Skipper of Evrika, Dominique Dubois, has also opted for an Easterly route. Earlier in the week he discovered they'd lost a large reaching headsail washed overboard. Under the OGR Notice of Race, this loss may incur a 24-hour penalty.

Pen Duick VI FR (14) is struggling to grab first place in IRC from Translated 9 IT (09), but is leading the fleet. Spirit of Helsinki FI (71), Translated 9 IT (09) and Maiden UK (03) have well and truly picked up the South Easterlies and are making good progress to Cape Town. The three French yachts, L'Esprit d'equipe FR (85), Triana FR (66) and Neptune FR (56) have also crossed the equator with their bows now set on catching the lead pack, determined to close the gap.

2023 Australian Sailing Awards Finalists Announced
The finalists of the 2023 Australian Sailing Awards have been announced, with clubs, volunteers and sailing stars from around the country all in the running for recognition at the nation's peak sailing awards.

In the Female and Male Sailor of the Year categories, finalists include major regatta medallists, world champions and Olympic gold medallists.

After an outstanding international season, it is a clean sweep for the Australian Sailing Team ILCA 6 squad in the Female Sailor of the Year category with Casey Imeneo (VIC), Mara Stransky (QLD) and Zoe Thomson (WA) announced as the three finalists.

Imeneo secured a stunning Bronze at the French Olympic Week regatta in Hyeres from a world-class fleet of 94 boats and finished in the top 10 at Kiel Week 2023. Reigning Australian Sailing Female Sailor of the Year Mara Stransky is back again, having accrued a remarkable string of top 10 finishes at several international regattas. Zoe Thomson is the third finalist, with the Western Australian putting the world on notice when she won Silver at the Palma regatta in March.

Australian Sailing Futures athlete Will Sargent (TAS) is a first-time finalist in the Male Sailor of the Year category after winning the SB20 World Championship and Youth World Championship in June this year. He will face stiff competition from 2022 Male Sailor of the Year and three-time SailGP Champion Tom Slingsby OAM (NSW), and 2018 winner Matt Wearn OAM (WA) who won the Paris 2024 Olympic Test Event in the ILCA 7.

2023 has seen the Club of the Year Award split into two, providing the opportunity for clubs to be recognised for their achievements regardless of size.

The Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia (SA), Keppel Bay Sailing Club (QLD) and Woollahra Sailing Club (NSW) have been named as finalists for the Club of the Year (Category A) award, while Humpybong Yacht Club (QLD), Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club (NSW) and Sandy Bay Sailing Club (TAS) have been named as the three finalists for Club of the Year (Category B).

The winners of each of the categories will be announced at the National Sailing Awards on Friday November 3 at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.

An iconic Derwent Class yacht called "Undine" is undergoing restoration in the hands of the talented team at The Wooden Boat Centre, Tasmania, destined for the racing circuit in time for the Kettering Wooden Boat Rally in February 2024.

According to Cordy Horgan, Head Shipwright and Manager of the Wooden Boat Centre (WBC) - Australia's only wooden boat building school - the project will involve the WBC's team of four, a couple of ex-students and volunteers over the next six months.

Derwent Class

"We officially began 1 June, and we're aiming to finish by November and have her sailing in December, ready for the Rally in February. Our team will be joined by local volunteers who are passionate about wooden boats, and ex-students, Sarah and John.

"Only the hull and mast remain," he continues. "We have to recreate everything else and fully re-rig her. There's a painting and an old set of plans which are hard to follow, but we're trying.

"The first step is the restoration of the hull, checking to make sure its intact. Then the second phase is the deck and cabin, followed by the rigging and caulking to get it back on the water."

Whimsically named Undine for the water nymph who could only become human if she was loved by a faithful mortal man, she is D13, built by Don Colbourn of Pirie Street, New Town, for P. and D. Hadlow, and launched 8 November 1948 ahead of the 12th D-class sailing season.

Each D-Class vessel is named after a mythological or literary persona, resulting in a colourful cast of characters: Imp, Pixie, Gnome, Sprite, Mermaid, Peter Pan, Wendy, Pim, Gremlin, Merlin, Janus, Merlin, Titania, and now, Undine. -- Jeni Bone

At 15.5 metres LOA, wallyrocket51 sits right in the pocket of the classic 52-footers. She measures slightly shorter than a TP52, but she is designed to beat them thanks to innovative features, ultralight displacement and an exhaustively refined hull. Moreover, Wally's design team has worked on wallyrocket51's design with Botin Partners – a team whose resume includes the America's Cup, and whose yacht designs have taken 12 consecutive TP52 season titles, ORC world championships and Rolex Maxi Cup titles, among many others.

wally rocket

"The idea of Wally was to make a very strict one-design class that could provide pure racing, that was high-tech and that could provide a lot of fun, but which could also be very competitive under IRC and ORC rating rules," begins Adolfo Carrau, Partner at Botin Partners Naval Architecture. "That was the starting point. We began with a 52-foot design because of our knowledge in that size and the fact that it's also a size that has proven competitive in all conditions and sea states. But the first secret of the wallyrocket51 design," he teases, "is that it's not a 52-footer, it's a 51-footer."

It's a critical factor, because it has allowed the design team to optimise the hull, underwater appendages and sailplan by getting a rating bonus that could be spent on other elements. Those include a displacement of just 6.3 tons in measurement condition – making it the lightest racing boat out there – which makes the wallyrocket51 very reactive, super-fast downwind and quick to plane. But while that would normally mean a disadvantage upwind, wallyrocket51 employs a feature that dominated the 2007 America's Cup – an adjustable trim tab on the trailing edge of the keel. This produces a huge amount of lift upwind on a smaller keel stem profile, reducing resistance and delivering neutral leeway. With the water flow aligned with the boat, there's a big reduction in hull drag which means in spite of having a shorter waterline length, the wallyrocket51 will be able to sail higher and faster than competitors.
