Anna Ostling and WINGS team Women's WMRT Champions
Copenhagen, Denmark: Sweden’s WINGS match racing team led by Anna Ostling have been crowned 2023 Women’s World Match Racing Tour champions after winning the final stage of the tour at the KDY Women’s Match Race in Skovshoved Harbour. New Zealand’s Celia Willison/ EDGE Women’s Match finished the world tour season in second place, with New Zealand's Meghan Thomson/ 2.0 Racing in third overall.

Ostling and crew of Anna Holmdal, Linnea Wennergren, Annika Carlunger, Jenny Axhede and Marie Grusmark arrived in Denmark this week just one point behind Celia Willison’s EDGE Women’s Match team on the tour leader-board. Ostling had to finish higher than 4th at the event to overtake Willison on points and secure the world tour title.

Using their years of experience sailing the DS37 boats at home in Sweden, WINGS managed to sail a strong regatta with a flawless 3-0 semi-final win over Denmark’s Camilla Ulrikkeholm, before going on to defeat Denmark’s Lea Richter Vogelius 3-0 in the final.

No Balls. Lots of Friction. Yet This New Harken Part Still Makes You Faster.
Harken The latest At The Front product from Harken is not streamlined, tapered, or ‘aero-friendly.’ We actually add friction to make it more ‘stay-where-you-put-it.’ And, at 294 pages, it is absolutely no lighter than the product it replaces. Yet we’re positive what’s inside will help you hold your lane off the starting line - without impacting your rating.

The 2024 Harken catalog is off press and on the rumb line to a boat show or chandlery near you. It comes in six languages. With Zircon, Air™ winch 180, the baby Black Magic block - all our new additions inside. There are QR codes throughout to transport you from page-to-video. Plus, there are charts thick with specs on hundreds of pages. It’s the most complete Harken catalog ever.

Now, like everything these days, the catalog is polarizing. Some think it’s old-school - as useful as that blooper bagged in your basement. Others consider it a critical tool for fit-outs and upgrades and bathroom breaks. We don’t take sides. We print it. We ship it. And... we also make an e-book version available right here. The English version is up now and soon you will find one in the footer of your local version of harken.com.

Polish the tooling - 52 Super Series
52 Super Series Credit is due, once again, to Alegre owner Andy Soriano. In summer 2017 he was first to commit to building a new TP52 for 2018 and now he is the first to sign on the dotted line to build new for what promises to be a very exciting 2024 52 Super Series season.

In such a highly competitive world when one owner starts the ball rolling others follow. Germany’s Harm Müller-Spreer has given the green light for a new Botín design of his own, built in Valencia also by King Marine from the same mould as Alegre.

And now there is widespread speculation about a new Sled and maybe even a new Quantum Racing… but with all that Doug DeVos has going on over the next 12 months with American Magic it seems more likely that he will move to a new boat for 2025.

Cup Spy Sept 22-23: Swiss coy about new flight control
The week ended with several America's Cup team members competing in the Italy SailGP, with AC co-helms finishing in the top four places on the leaderboard. The testing continued off Barcelona, with the Swiss and Brits testing sails and foils. Before all that, of course, was the first Preliminary Event, in Vilanova.

What happened in the Cup - September 22-23, 2023:

Alinghi Red Bull Racing - On Saturday (Sept 23) the Swiss team undertook tow testing of what is believed to be a new foil control system developed by the Swiss team, despite assertions that their intention was to sail, it seems no sails were hoisted. On Friday (Sept 22) the Swiss continued sail testing in their AC40/LEQ12 test boat, after fitting additional GoPro cameras to monitor sail shape.

INEOS Britannia - Sailed on Friday (Sept 22) on their test platform T6, but they found cracks in their new test foil and decided to call a halt to the session so it could be checked at the base. Many of the British team competed in Italy SailGP, with Ben Ainslie skippering Emirates GB to their second successive win.

Emirates Team New Zealand - No report, meaning either they did not sail, or sailed only in their AC40-One Design and were not accompanied by the AC37 Joint Recon program team. Due to being without a wingsail for the weekend's Italy SailGP, in Taranto, the sailing team did not participate.

American Magic - No report, meaning either they did not sail, or sailed only in their AC40-One Design and were not accompanied by the AC37 Joint Recon program team. Co-helmsman Tom Slingsby competed in Italy SailGP placing second overall.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - No report, meaning either they did not sail, or sailed only in their AC40-One Design and were not accompanied by the AC37 Joint Recon program team. Co-helmsman Jimmy Spithill competed in Italy SailGP placing third overall.

Orient Express Racing Team - No report, meaning either they did not sail, or sailed only in their AC40-One Design and were not accompanied by the AC37 Joint Recon program team. The French team participated in Italy SailGP regatta in Taranto, finishing fourth.

Capehorn Hall Of Fame Inductees 2023
Les Sables d'Olonne, France, home to the Cape Horn Hall of Fame witnessed the induction of 6 new names to its honours board during the opening of a new clubhouse dedicated to the history of this most famous of all Capes and the sailors who have rounded it.

Organised by the International Association of Cape Horners (IACH), Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, President of the Association, and Yannick Moreau, The Mayor of Les Sables d'Olonne announced the 6 new celebrity Cape Horners.

Dame Ellen MacArthur - UK
Grant Dalton - New Zealand
Skip Novak - USA
Jeanne Socrates - UK
Franck Cammas - France
Michel Desjoyeaux - France

Between them, they have 24 circumnavigations - all of them via Cape Horn - and have set 9 world records.

The awards were held in the Mini-Transat race village within Les Sables d'Olonne where 90 solo sailors will set out on the first stage of their 3,000-mile chase across the Atlantic to Guadalupe on Sunday in their 6.5m yachts. Many of the names short-listed for this year's awards first cut their ocean racing teeth in this class, including Dame Ellen MacArthur and Michel Desjoyeaux. As Sir Robin Knox-Johnston pointed out: "From little acorns, mighty oaks grow. Some of those taking part in this year's Mini-Transat Race will become the sailing super stars of the future."

McIntyre Ocean Globe Dodging Dreaded Doldrums
There’s never a dull moment in the McIntyre Ocean Globe race. It’s just two weeks since the 14-strong fleet left Southampton for Cape Town and there’s already been a dramatic helicopter rescue, diversion, weather warning, no wind, yacht speeds of 19 knots, flying fish, home sicknesses, blown spinnakers, quiche Lorraine and many, many tweets. And then there’s the race itself, which has been mesmerizingly close, with clever tactics and a sprinkling of luck on display.

aire Tabarly and her crew, on the heaviest yacht 73ft Pen Duick VI, are steaming ahead. And luck looks like its on their side as a narrow band of breeze has broken up the doldrum belt – giving them a wind bridge and passage towards the South Easterly trade winds. This could well and truly cement their dominance.

Maiden, 58ft and lighter, is racing just as hard and dueling with the Italian boat, Translated 9, the Swan 65 formerly ADC Accutrac from the 1977 Whitbread. Translated 9 has surprised many. Currently sitting first overall in IRC ranking, the tracker might be showing 4th in line honours, but it’s too close to call.

Finnish entrant, Spirit of Helsinki, a Swan 651, the most westerly boat in the fleet is leading Sayula class by a massive margin, despite missing two of their spinnakers due to a delayed delivery in Southampton. They might well get caught by the dreaded doldrums over the coming days, giving the middle pack a chance to catch up.
