Light air start to 2023 ORC Double Handed Worlds Long distance race
Barcelona, Spain: After a 40-minute delay awaiting a sailable easterly breeze, today race managers from Real Club Nautico Barcelona (RCNB) got all three classes off on their Long distance race at the 2023 ORC Double Handed World Championship.

After the light air upwind start in the easterly, the fleet enjoyed a breeze that increased throughout the afternoon to 12-13 knots from the south, propelling all downwind towards their respective turning marks.

On-board trackers in the eStela system use the mobile phone network to show the entry's real-time positions on the course. 17 entries in Class A and 21 entries in Class B are racing on a 180-mile course that tracks northeast along the Catalan coast to the Medes Islands, leaving them to starboard, then east to the ODAS Begur beacon, then returning on reciprocal legs to finish close to the start location.

t 2330 CET Fernando Julio and Retegui Bernardeau's DK 46 #URBANIA appears to be leading Class A having rounded the Medes Islands and are close to rounding the ODAS Begur beacon with a narrow lead over Ines Rodriguez and Jorge Arnal's (ESP) IMS 50 DUENDE 50.

At the same time in Class B Jonathan McKee and Peter Isler (USA) racing their SunFast 3300 RED RUBY are in the lead on the same leg, with a narrow lead over Joel Brosa and Jaume Mumbru's (ESP) XP-38 XPRESS.

Incident Filled Day Two At The Yanmar Dragon Gold Cup
The second day of racing at the Yanmar Dragon Gold Cup 2023 in Torquay brought an intensely fought second race and more than a few dramatic incidents.

Just as the race was about to get underway a call came over the VHF to announce that one of the competitors had fallen overboard by the pin mark. The Race Committee immediately announced a short postponement and tasked RIBs to assist. Fortunately, the competitor was rapidly back in his boat, a towel and some dry clothes were found, and they went on to race.

As soon as the man overboard was resolved the race committee went back into action. With a slight current pushing the boats over the line, it took three attempts to get the fleet away, the third under black flag. Caught out by that black flag were GBR192 Graham Bailey and GBR831 Gavia Wilkinson-Cox, who headed home for a leisurely lunch.

For the rest of the fleet, a two and a half mile beat across the mouth of Torbay in a very shifty and variable south westerly lay ahead of them. At the weather mark it was SUI313 Dirk Oldenburg that led the pack, closely followed by POR90 Michael Zankel, GER1221 Jan Wortman, SWE800 Jan Secher, GRB820 Grant Gordon, GBR815 Lawrie Smith, GBR682 Eric Williams, GER62 Stephan Link and TUR12 Andy Beadsworth.

Provisional Top Five After Two Races
1st - Lawrie Smith, GBR815, Alfie - 1, 1 = 2
2nd - Wolf Waschkuhn, SUI318, 1quick1 - 4, 4 = 8
3rd - Xavier Vanneste, BEL82, Herbie - 5, 8 = 13
4th - Peter Gilmour, JPN56, YRed - 3, 12 = 15
5th - Grant Gordon, GBR820, Louise Racing - 12, 6 = 18

Clifden-based Ketch Teddy Partially Dismasted In Arctic Storm
The 39ft Danish-built ketch Teddy is a familiar sight in the heart of the Connacht coast, snugly berthed along the tidal quayside at Clifden in Connemara. And when she's not there, we can usually be sure that owner-skipper Nick Kats - a specialist nutritionist who voyages extensively despite being very significantly hearing-impaired - is in high latitudes, on an Arctic cruise to Iceland, Jan Mayen or Greenland.

As usual at the conclusion of such ventures, Teddy was expected back in Clifden around September 15th. So in anticipation of this - and while waiting to see if our prediction of sea breezes finally brought life today (Saturday) to the ICRA Nats at Howth - we fired off a signal to Teddy's skipper to hear the latest word on progress.

The mind-blowing response engendered visions of sea states and weather conditions just about as far as you can get from a calm Indian summer's day on the Fingal coast. In fact, we're still processing it, and we reckon it speaks very eloquently for itself if we simply re-post it in its raw form as it came from Nick, for it's something which leaves any thoughtful sailor temporarily at a loss for words:

Two Complete Knockdowns...

Dual Defending Champions Prepare for Eighth Edition of Corinthian Sailing Classic
Newport, RI: Of the many illustrious clubs from around the world that have competed in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, the premiere fleet regatta for Corinthian crews, two have most consistently demonstrated the slick boatspeed and smooth crew handling that are the hallmarks of winning one-design crews: Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans and Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (above) of Australia. One of the two has placed first and/or second in the past three editions, dating to 2017.

The two teams' run of success began six years ago, when Southern Yacht Club posted a 12-point victory over Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron for its first victory in the prestigious regatta. Two years later, in 2019, it was Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron's turn to win its first Invitational Cup, posting a four-point victory that went down to the final day of racing, while Southern Yacht Club placed fifth.

Yearning to defend their historic title—Royal Sydney was the first team from the Southern Hemisphere to win the coveted trophy—in 2021, helmsman Guido Belgiorno-Nettis and crew were "very disappointed" when they were denied the opportunity due to travel restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, Southern Yacht Club, helmed by 2004 Olympic Silver medalist (Tornado) John Lovell, posted a 10-point victory for its second title in three editions.

The first race is scheduled for 1100 on Tuesday, September 12. A live race-by-race broadcast of the regatta will start on Wednesday, September 13. -- Stuart Streuli, NYYC

OK Dinghy European Championship
The 2023 OK Dinghy European Championship at Circolo Vela Arco began Monday with four races in 10-15 knots of hot southerly breeze that gave everyone a challenge. The race wins went to Jens Eckardt of Denmark and Britain's Matt Howard in the yellow group, while Britain's Charlie Cumbley and Germany's Jan Kurfeld won the blue fleet group races.

After a short delay on the water the Ora filled in slowly and built to provide an awesome day of sailing. Germany's Andre Budzien led yellow fleet for both races for a while but was scored UFD in the opening race and was then passed by Howard in the second.

In the blue fleet, it was a battle between Kurfeld, Cumbley and Denmark's Bo Petersen and France's Valerian Lebrun. While Cumbley got the better off them in the opening race, Kurfeld slipped past in the second to take the win.

Three races are scheduled for Tuesday before the fleet splits in gold and silver groups for the final two days.

It was a momentous day for the class with more than 100 OK Dinghies sailing on Lake Garda for the first ever – it was a sight to behold.

Raceboats Only YYACHTS Y7. POA EUR.

The Y7 was created in collaboration with US designer Bill Tripp, considered one of the world's best naval architects. Our goal was to combine comfortable sailing performance with competitive sailing performance, even on the regatta course.

In conditions where other yachts still use their engines, the sails are already set on the Y7. A displacement of only 29 tons and almost 300 square meters of sail area at wind make move the yacht even in light winds; Y7 owners don't have to worry about the perfect weather all the time.

All halyards, sheets and stretchers run hidden to the steering columns - so the helmsman can operate the Y7 alone at any time. This is not a matter of course for a 70-foot yacht and allows the owner to sail with a very small crew or even on his own.
