Emotional Start To Mcintyre Ocean Globe
History was made anew today as the cannons of the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes, signaled the start of the inaugural McIntyre Ocean Globe mirroring the original 1973 Whitbread. Hundreds of spectators boats witnessed the stunning scenes as the 14 iconic yachts crossed the start line en route to Cape Town. With seven former Whitbread yachts amongst the fleet, the OGR has its roots firmly in sailing history but now also looking to the future for sailors chasing adventure and a life less ordinary.

Emotions overflowed as lines slipped at 09:30 am, Explorer AU (28) and Steran SFA (42) leading the fleet towards the Royal Yacht Squadron start line, Cowes, for the 13:00hrs start. They were followed at five-minute intervals by Galiana WithSecure FI (06), Neptune FR (56), Maiden UK (03), Spirit of Helsinki FI (71), Translated 9 IT (09), White Shadow ESP (17), Outlaw AU (08), L'Esprit d'Equipe FR (85), Evrika FR (07), Triana FR (66), Godspeed USA (01) and finally Pen Duick VI FR (14).

It was the sight of skipper Marie Tabarly at the helm of Pen Duick VI exiting MDL Ocean Village marina that summed up what the McIntyre OGR means to so many people. Pen Duick VI was dismasted twice in the 1973 Whitbread when skippered by Marie's father, Eric Tabarly. Neptune, Spirit of Helsinki (formerly Frazer), Translated 9 (formerly ADC Accutrac), Outlaw (formerly Equity and Law) and Maiden, all Whitbread veterans. L'Esprit d'Equipe a former Whitbread winner also returned. There's a lot to prove in this race.

Horeau leads out of Roscoff on decisive Stage 3
Last Thursday and Friday Roscoff may have yielded one of the slowest and most frustrating finishes to a stage in the long history of the race, long hours of windless Doldrums leaving many of the pre-race favourites becalmed. In a three week, three stage solo race which is usually won or lost by minutes, some of the race stars were rendered more than a dozen hours behind the top three finishers.

But today the Bay of Morlaix - one of Brittany's most important sailing hubs which has produced solo offshore stars such as Armel Le Cleac'h, Jeremie Beyou and Nico Troussel - atoned somewhat, by giving the 54th La Solitaiare Figaro Paprec fleet a great send off on to what still promises to be a slow, problematic 470 miles decisive final stage to Piriac-sur-Mer, just north of Saint Nazaire on the Loire Atlantique coast.

In 12-14kts of SW'ly wind, a warm sun lost at times behind an occasionally swirling sea mist - the fleet took on a around a short circuit in the Bay. And it was Corentin Horeau (Banque Populaire) - who lies second on the general classification - who laid down the gauntlet with an immaculate display of round-the-buoys precision and slick, smooth solo boathandling.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup concludes with Bella Mente victory
Photo by Max Ranchi, www.maxranchi.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Bella Mente Final races of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, run by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in conjunction with the International Maxi Association, started but couldn't finish due to a lack of wind. At 1300 the fleet was sent back to Porto Cervo by PRO Peter Craig.

One of the most worthy victories was in Maxi B, the most 'grand prix' class, comprising former Maxi 72s, the 82ft Django HF and two VO65s. American Hap Fauth is a previous three time Rolex Mini Maxi/Maxi 72 World Championship winner, a title he last won in 2016. He returned with his present boat in 2019 but it was only on his fourth attempt this year, with the latest iteration of his 74ft maxi (now with water ballast and twin rudders) that Bella Mente returned to her old form, beating George Sakellaris' Proteus by three points, with Peter Harrison's Pepe Cannonball third.

In Maxi A (for the former <100ft 'Maxi Racer' class) David M Leuschen and Chris Flowers' 100ft Galateia won by seven points from the 100ft Leopard 3, which this morning rose to second, one point ahead of Andrea Recordati's 93ft Bullitt after a reappraisal of the scoring. While Leopard 3 made the strongest start to the event, Andrea Recordati's heavily refitted 93ft Bullitt won two races in lighter winds. Meanwhile Galateia simply maintained a consistent series of podium finishes.

2023 was a landmark year for the event with the introduction of a new Maxi Multihull class. Again here Adrian Keller's 84ft catamaran Allegra made a strong start claiming the first two races in strong winds while winning the last two in lighter conditions was Irvine Laidlaw's Gunboat 80 Highland Fling 18. Ultimately Allegra won by two points ahead of Highland Fling 18 and the Gunboat 68 Convexity2 of Don Wilson and Suna Said. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Super Swedes Svea
Photo by Ingrid Abery, www.ingridabery.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Svea There was insufficient wind to sail the final scheduled races at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. Although the maxi fleets went afloat and the J Class started a short coastal race it had to be abandoned when the light wind died away.

And so Svea's unbeaten run of six wins from six starts remains intact and the Swedish flagged team retain the J Class title which they won last year. They led four races through the finish line whilst Velsheda took two winning guns but lost out on corrected time.

For Svea's Swedish co-owner Niklas Zennstrom this is his sixth Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 'worlds' title after winning in the Maxi72s in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013 and with Svea in the J Class last year.

It has been an excellent week of racing for the three J Class contestants, the only time this season that they race as a fleet together under the J Class Association's own rating rule.

But all the teams are looking forwards to an exciting, demanding 2024 season which will include an event in Mahon, Menorca 28th May-2nd June, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup this time next year and the proposed second J Class World Championship in Barcelona during the 37th America's Cup. New to the fleet will be Rainbow which is now owned by Neville Crichton which last raced here in Porto Cervo in 2014 but has a reputation for being a fast, light J Class.

X-Yachts announces the latest model in its Xc series of blue water cruising boats with bold claims and some new design features

Few brands in the boat industry are as respected as Denmark's X-Yachts. It was founded 43 years ago by three passionate sailors and all through the 1980s various models built on the revolutionary Niels Jeppesen design won one world championship after another. Later, focus shifted to high-end performance cruisers, based on the Scandinavian tradition of craftsmanship. Through the years X-Yachts has become famous for attention to detail and a drive for innovation and high build quality. Reducing production cost has never been the main priority. If you ask the often very dedicated X owners, they will tell you that X-Yachts simply know how to make a boat that works. Not only in harbours, but in real offshore conditions.

Rastello and 'Good To Go' win the J/70 European Championship
Doug Rastello and his USA team on 'Good To Go' have won the J/70 European Championship hosted by the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. While the American crew were the outright winners of the 48-boat keelboat fleet, it was the runners-up from Portugal, Vasco Serpa and Solyd Sailing Team/SailCascais who become the European Champions.

For the second day in a row there was barely a breath of wind across Portland Harbour or Weymouth Bay and the race committee made a call for abandoning racing at midday. It was a frustrating but unavoidable conclusion to the regatta which saw five races take place in light and shifty conditions out in the Bay. There were no complaints about the temperature in the late 20s but the light easterly gradient made it impossible for afternoon sea breezes to develop on the south coast of England.

While five races was well short of the target for the championship, there could be no doubting that Rastello's crew proved worthy winners of the regatta. Their scores of 11,3,2,7,6 were significantly more consistent than the rest of the fleet, the Americans racking up just 18 points with discard compared with 29 points for the Portuguese in second overall. It's a sign of just how tricky the conditions were, that the top-placed boat to win an individual race was the Mexican entry in fifth overall, Zaguero skippered by Ignacio Perez. -- Andy Rice

International Six Metre World Championship
The Royal Yacht Squadron's famous lawn overlooking the Solent was the setting for an elegant sunset Prize Giving Reception that brought the International Six Metre World Championship 2023 to a close. The sailors gathered in the presence of His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain to celebrate their champions and enjoy one final evening together.

This has been the 50-year anniversary of the ISMA World Championship. The first regatta was held in Seattle in 1973, and the trophy presented then by the Port of Seattle and the Puget Sound 6 Metre Association, The Six Metre World Cup, is still awarded today. Of the competitors participating in Cowes, GER96 Hanko III is the only boat that was also at that first event. At that time, she was known as US96 Eclipse. She was sailed by C. William "Bill" Brasier of Tacoma, Washington and placed twelfth of the twenty entries. The event was won by Tom Blackaller of the St Francis Yacht Club sailing US100 St Francis V in a duel with Australia's Olympic Gold Medal Star sailor David Forbes sailing KA6 Pacemaker that went down to the last race.

Peter Peet takes Finn European Masters title after tense final day
Peter Peet, from The Netherlands, has won the 2023 Finn European Masters at Campione del Garda, Italy, after a nervous last day with a long wait for wind and then two more challenging races in light and shifty winds. Britain's John Greenwood took second with Simon Bovay, from Switzerland, moving back up to third.

The racing did not get any easier on the final day on Lake Garda, with a very late and light Ora coming in for two hot and tricky races. The first race was probably the lightest of the week and produced a very mixed bag of results. Both Peet and Greenwood were very deep, but both had the same discard, so nothing changed at the front. Sweden's Peter Overup started at the boat, tacked to the cliffs and was never headed. He took the win from Slovakia's Peter Mosny and Turkey's Sinan Sumer.

The final race turned into a one-way track with a big left shift and pin end bias. Those down the pin laid the top mark after a short hitch with France's Laurent Hay leading round and extending to take the last race win of the week from Peet and Hungary's Tibor Pallay.

Emirates Great Britain win in Saint-Tropez
Sir Ben Ainslie and his Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team ended a two and half year event win drought with a masterful performance at the France Sail Grand Prix final. In front of a sellout shoreline crowd in Saint-Tropez, Ainslie outfoxed the reigning champions - Tom Slingsby's Australia - and Diego Botin's in-form Spain team to taste victory for the first time since the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix in Season 2.

Australia stormed into the final with a win in the day's final fleet race, and the young Spanish team made it two event finals in a row after its victory last time out in Los Angeles, but neither could match the British performance in the final. Ainslie ran the Aussies down in the penultimate leg of the race in an enthralling neck and neck battle.

Botin's Spain is second in the season standings after an excellent start to Season 4 and looks to be only growing in confidence. It was a disappointing day for ROCKWOOL Denmark, as Nicolai Sehested's team led the standings after day one only to miss the final and a chance for a debut event win.

The European leg of Season 4 of SailGP continues in just two weeks with the ROCKWOOL Italy Sail Grand Prix | Taranto on September 23 and 24. For details head to SailGP.com/Taranto.
