Gaston Morvan leads to Land's End
A bold move to the east to work the rugged Welsh coast, saw Gaston Morvan(Region Bretagne-CMB Performance) make a gain of nearly a dozen miles between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, allowing the talented young French skipper to get his La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec back on track, leading Stage 2 towards Land's End this Wednesday evening.

With the fleet leaders racing south in a modest E'ly wind funneling in to the narrow gap at the TSS Seven Stones offshore of Land's End Morvan has a lead of just over four nautical miles with 125 miles of the stage from Kinsale to Roscoff still to race.

Eleventh on the first leg from Caen to Kinsale, finishing 17 minutes behind stage winner Tom Dolan Morvan admitted today he is in good shape, happy to be in the match. Reflecting that he did not take enough of a risk on Stage 1, Morvan was the first to break to the Welsh coast last night where he found more consistent breeze and less tide than his rivals who all but halted in the middle of the Saint George's Channel.

Also making good gains on the strength of the same move has been Corentin Horeau (Banque Populaire) who was down in the teens, like Morvan with a deficit of more than ten miles on the erstwhile leader Alexis Loison (Groupe Reel). Horeau is back up to fifth at a little over five miles behind Morvan. And the young French rookie who crossed the finish line first into Kinsale but was penalized 30 minutes for a class rules infringement, Benoit Tuduri (Capso en Cavale) is fourth.

Ireland's Tom Dolan, stage 1 winner on Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan has dropped to 16th, 16 miled behind Morvan.

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup For day three of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in conjunction with the International Maxi Association, the wind on the Costa Smeralda was still from the north but marginally lighter (12-16 knots) than Tuesday. The sea was flatter, albeit with the occasional large, left-over waves ready to drench any unwary crew.

With the wind due to lighten in the afternoon, start times were advanced by an hour and a 26 mile course was set for Maxi C, anti-clockwise around La Maddalena. The remaining classes sailed a similar 30 mile lap, rounding Spargi too. The Js raced two further windward-leewards.

At just over the half way stage of the event some are already looking invincible at the top of their classes; others less so.

In Maxi B, the former Maxi 72s now have a tie at the top after four races, including two windward-leewards. After finishing close to yesterday's winner George Sakellaris' Proteus, Hap Fauth's Bella Mente finally prevailed today.

Claus-Peter Offen's y3k secured her second victory in the Super Maxi class, this time by one minute from Marco Vogele's 111ft Inoui. The brand new 101 footer leads overall by just one point from Inoui, which has finished second in every race.

The Maxi Multihull class was back up to three. Irvine Laidlaw's brand new Gunboat 80 Highland Fling 18 returned to the race course guns blazing, the red catamaran scoring her first ever bullet, albeit by just 14 seconds from Adrian Keller's 84ft catamaran Allegra, which still leads the new class with a near perfect scoreline.

Svea's winning streak extended

Svea As the J Class returned to windward leeward courses at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo today, two further race wins for the Swedish flagged Svea means the team are well set to collect the top award for the three-boat class at Saturday's prizegiving at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

Racing in a sparkling 12-16kts of NNE'ly breeze with a bumpy sea state, the well drilled Velsheda crew did make Svea work especially hard for their second win of the day, but the team led by tactician Bouwe Bekking still remain unbeaten after five races, all of them sailed in great conditions.

With an expectation that the breeze would diminish in the afternoon, racing was brought forwards an hour to capitalize on the perfect winds. And while Svea again won the day, the other honours were shared between Velsheda and Topaz.

After a bitterly disappointing Tuesday when they tore two spinnakers in succession on the same awkward downwind, Topaz bounced back to a much better day. Notably they won both starts with strong positioning and pin sharp timing.

Race 4
1. Svea, corrected time 1h15m51s
2. Topaz 1h17m02s
3. Velsheda 1h18m04s

Race 5
1. Svea 1h08m21s
2. Velsheda 1h08m42s
3. Topaz 1h09m21s

Overall Standings after 5 races
1. Svea 5pts
2. Velsheda 12pts
3. Topaz 14pts

Peter Peet takes lead at Finn European Masters
Peter Peet, from The Netherlands, is the new leader at the 2023 Finn European Masters at Campione del Garda after two more extremely difficult but fun races on Wednesday. Britain's John Greenwood moves up to second after winning the second race while Simon Bovey, from Switzerland, is now third.

It was a very hot day on Lake Garda with a shifty 8-9 knots filling in after a short postponement ashore and some different tactics in play during the day.

After some starting practice, the fleet finally got away and similar to Tuesday, most of the fleet headed to the cliffs. However, many also overstood allowing those who got the laylines right to make some gains. Italy's Roberto Benamati was one of those and rounded third, took the lead on the run and led round to take the gun. Britain's Lawrence Crispin sailed a great race to cross second with Peter Overup, from Sweden, in third. -- Robert Deaves

Tracy Edwards MBE celebrates her birthday in style with Maiden Crew and fellow Whitbread Veterans

Sailing history was made yesterday with 83 Whitbread veterans, representing 38 Whitbread boats, reliving their memories and telling their stories at the OGR 50th Anniversary reunion held in MDL Race Village, Ocean Village Southampton. It was a highly emotional evening as the veterans caught up with 'old' sailing friends, and former rivals, in the company of the crews preparing to sail around the world in the McIntyre Ocean Globe (OGR), a race in the spirit of the original Whitbread Round the World Race from 1973.

The evening was compared by Barry Pickthall, aka Mr Whitbread, the former yachting correspondent for The Times newspaper who has covered every Whitbread race. He welcomed OGR race patron, Sir Chay Blyth, who skippered Great Britain II in the first Whitbread. Chay was delighted to be in the company of so many veteran

Light airs and just one race on Day Three of the Six Metre Worlds
Conditions were extremely light on the third day of the International Six Metre World Championship in Cowes. With strong spring tides to consider the Royal Yacht Squadron Race Committee knew they had just a narrow window of opportunity to run a race during the slack water period. They postponed the race for an hour initially, but then called the teams out to the race area to await wind. Fortunately, their patience paid off and five to seven knots filled in from the south-east for just long enough to allow a single two lap race for both divisions to be completed.

With the breeze coming down the course in variable bands it was a tough day for the sailors despite the relatively benign (by Solent standards) current, which fortunately was against the boats upwind increasing the apparent wind and helping them to make progress over it. The late summer sun continued to shine and once again the fleet made a spectacular sight spread out against the Hillhead shore.

In the Open Division, race victory went to Dieter Scho

In the Classic Division the French were showing plenty of flair as reigning World Champion Dix Aout, with Gery Trentesaux at the helm, took her third race win of the series. Dix Aout's owner Louis Heckly is instead sailing Fun this week and followed Dix Aout across the line for second, their best result of the regatta so far. Mauricio Sanchez-Bella's Titia finished third and His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain's Bribon, being helmed by Ross McDonald, fourth.
