Will the leader at Fastnet win into Kinsale?
The leaders of La Solitaire duFigaro Paprec are due to reach the Fastnet Rock tonight, the long-awaited finalturn of a 610 miles first stage from Caen, the lonely rock heralding a last 45miles sprint into Kinsale, Ireland where they are expected Thursday morning.

All of their attentions have been focused on getting clear of a high pressure ridge and choosing their best position to get through a final front which then promises a fast, brisk final night a tsea, 20kts from the SW with gusts of 25-28 kts set to finally give some fast downwind and reaching.

At the Isles of Scilly last night,Ireland's Tom Dolan (Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan) broke to the north east from the top group and held the stage lead through much of the day. But the Irish skipper has spent several hours slowed in the light winds and had dropped to fourth in the late afternoon.

The main peloton, including the solo-skippers who had led in the English Channel, Guillaume Piroulle (RégionBretagne), Corentin Horeau (Banque Populaire) and Basil Bourgnon (Edenred) are still tightly grouped some 30 miles to the west of Dolan, the Swiss skipper Nils Palmieri(Teamwork) and two French rookies Julie Simon (Douze) and BenoîtTuduri (Capso en Cavale) who were holding second and first places respectively a few hundred metres apart.

The western pack should be into the strong downwind conditions first. but will have sailed many more miles than Dolan whose logical focus seems to be sailing the shortest distance to the iconic rocky light he knows well.

Top ten positions at 0345 French time
1. Capso en Cavale, Benoit Tuduri, 35.5 nm to finish of leg 1
2. TeamWork, Nils Palmieri, 2.6 nm to leader
3. Douze, Julie Simon, 2.7
4. Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan, Tom Dolan, 3.7
5. Centre excellence voile - Secours populaire, Romain Le Gall, 4.8
6. Ma Chance Moi Aussi, Robin Marais, 6.4
7. La Charent Maritim, Alexis Thomas, 6.6
8. Edenred, Basile Bourgnon, 8.0
9. Banque Populaire, Corintin Horeau, 8.5
10. Skipper MACIF 2022, Lois Berrehar, 8.6

8 Metre World Championship- Second day of races in the Gulf of Genoa
Genoa, Italy: For the second day of races, Genoa has provided a perfect day again, with short waves and an initial 8-knot breeze from the Southeast, which later increased to around 14 knots towards the end of the day. The Race Committee managed to start two races today as well, bringing the total valid races for the world championship to 4; in order to validate the championship, 5 races are required, and from the sixth race onwards, the discard will come into play, allowing everyone to eliminate their worst result from the score.

Out at sea today, the first race started at noon, after all the boats were towed out of the Porticciolo Duca degli Abruzzi in Genoa - the 8 Metres do not have auxiliary engines and require assistance for all mooring and leaving operations from the port. The first start was regular, with the fleet splitting to the two extremes of the racecourse for the first leg, with the left side proving to be the most advantageous and enabling the frontrunners to consolidate an advantage that they maintained until the finish line. For the second race, the wind increased above 10 knots and the Committee, after an initial attempt, started with the black flag.

With the fleet spread across the entire course and the gaps among these boats truly minimal, the final results then provided some surprises - apart from the Swiss team on Yquem II who firmly remain in the lead after four races (1, 1, 1, 3) and shine for the consistency in their placements, the Australians on Peter Harburg's Mirabelle by had an excellent second race of the day, placing second, following the Swiss at just 3 points. The series of excellent races continues for Bona, the 1934 Baglietto owned by Vera Mogna - the top two are modern yachts - maintaining the third position (first among the Italians), and a strong ranking for Vision, the glorious 1930 Nicholson skippered by Paolo Manzoni - who, for the occasion, also has Tommaso Chieffi, Flavio Grassi, and Vittorio Zaoli on board, securing the fourth position.

2023 Hamble Classics Regatta - 8th edition is 'best ever'
Photo by Rick Tomlinson, rick-tomlinson.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

WHAT The 2023 Hamble Classics Regatta with earlier than usual Bank Holiday timing provided great sailing conditions for a wide range of yachts, dayboats and gaffers on two contrasting days. A regular entrant described it as 'the best HCR ever!' with Saturday's dramatic skies, winds shifts and rain squalls making way for steadier conditions on Sunday but it was still demanding on crew work as an 8 knot breeze built to 19 knots in the afternoon.

With the RAFYC as the social base and race management by Hamble River Sailing Club the varied fleet of 31 yachts with build dates from 1886 to 2018 was split into six starts; IRC, Regatta Handicap, Old Gaffer, XOD, plus the International 6-Metres invited for practice before their World Championship starting this week in Cowes. The PRO Peter Bateson assisted by Kathy Smalley and a strong volunteer team of Assistant RO's and RIB crews set round-the-cans courses to suit each class plus windward-leewards for the two 6-Metre divisions, Classic and Open, and a mix of courses for the XODs.

At the prize giving after racing on Sunday, event organiser Jonty Sherwill thanked both the clubs, Vicki his wife and hard working crew aboard Cockleshell, and the sponsor partners Spinlock, Classic Marine, the Elephant Boatyard, OneSails, the Sandeman Yacht Company, and the Salcombe Distilling Company, supporter the Concours d'Elegance Awards with their Start Point Gin. The prize winners were presented with Hamble Classics 2023 engraved champagne flutes by HRSC Commodore Serena Alexander, and each yacht with a OneSails permanent marker pen made from Pip Hare's recycled 4T FORTE sails used during the Vendée Globe Race 2020-2021.

For the special awards, the shorthanded Tea-for-Trophy was shared by Cygnet and Mincarlo, the Kismet yacht model went to Samiotissa's always jolly crew, and the Norlethe Trophy to Aiden Barr for his exceptional contribution to the event. Key personnel including PRO Peter Bateson were presented with bottles of Salcombe's latest creation, their Salcombe Rum 'Island Street', and with each bottle sold it contributes support to the RNLI.

Tracy Edwards and The Maiden Factor want to inspire girls all around the world
"The Ocean Globe Race is the ultimate adventure and test of courage, strength and determination.

To go back to basics and sail the world without modern technology especially GPS is such a cool opportunity. In 1989 Tracy and the crew of Maiden proved to the world that it could be done, now I want to show young women around the world what they themselves are capable of with hard work and determination.

With the Maiden Factor's following and modern-world social media, we have a really unique platform to inspire young girls and women around the world to dream big!" -- Heather Thomas, Skipper

Cup Spy August 29: Swiss coaches capsize in training
Cup Spy August 29 Three Cup teams sailed off Barcelona in stronger breezes of 8-16kts giving the teams the opportunity for racing practice in the softer morning breeze. It increased in the afternoon placing a greater premium on boathandling - with the Swiss coaching team of Dean Barker and Phil Robertson capsizing.

What happened in the Cup - August 29 2023:

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed two AC40's both in one design mode the Barker/Robertson co-helmed boat pitched against the Psarofaghis/Bachelin combination that will likely co-helm for Alinghi Red Bull Racing in the Preliminary Event in Vilanora, in mid-September. The racing was more even than Monday. The Robertson/Barker helmed AC40 capsized their AC40 soon after a boat change.

- INEOS Britannia - had a more successful day with T6 pitched against their AC40 OD. The Brits did a combination of performance testing, and racing practice ahead of Vilmora.

- American Magic sailed two AC40OD's with Paul Goodison and Lucas Calabrese co-helming one AC40, with Tom Slingsby and Harry Melges co-helming the other. It is expected that Goodison and Slingsby will co-helm in Vilanova. However Slingsby has SailGP helming obligations in the weekends either side of the Vilanova regatta.

- Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail.

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli did not sail their LEQ12 out of Sardinia

- Orient Express Racing Team - no report - but the recon teams got shots of the French team sailing today. They also have SailGP obligations either side of Vilanova.

The IMOCA will now be transferred to Black Pepper Yachts in Nantes, France, to complete the final fit-out, with hydrogen integration specialists Genevos installing the complete energy system.

Following the millimetre precision placement of the ring frames, the hull of the OceansLab IMOCA was carefully removed from her mould in April. During May and June some 20 bulkheads and other supporting structures made from prepress carbon-epoxy with a lightweight nomex core were installed.

In parallel, June and July saw the build of the deck and integrated cockpit, which took two months to manufacture from start to finish.

With all the internal structure, foil supports and keel support completed, the build team has now joined the deck to the hull, marking the end of the eight-month structural build that began when fibre was first laid into the mould.

Now the focus is on systems installation of the rigging, deck gear, electronics, hydraulics, and the energy system.

The OceansLab IMOCA will soon take part in Lorient's new single-handed transatlantic race, Retour à la Base, which starts in Martinique on November 26. As well as serving as the qualifier for the Vendée Globe 2024, the race is also part of a fair-trade scheme to transport goods across the Atlantic under sail.

Transat Jacques Vabre - "In order to stay on top and align with the departure of Fabien Delahaye Navigateur with the best boat possible, we decided to launch the construction of Lift V2, a Lombard plan that starts from the same base as the winner of Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe 2022, to which we'll give Let's bring many optimizations and innovations. Exciting to think a boat based on our vision and goals. Been working a lot with Corentin Douguet and Yoann Richomme last year on the performance aspect of their boats. The aim was to analyze their strengths and weaknesses to better understand them. Evidently this has fueled my discussions with the architects for the construction of the new LEGAL Class40 We tried to make the best of this generation's strengths and erase the weaknesses I could see. At the same time, we have worked on the ergonomics of the boat to use its potential to 100%.
