Provezza lay down the early marker at Rolex TP52 World Championship in Barcelona
Winners of two of the season's three regattas so far, 2023's circuit leaders Ergin Imre's Turkish flagged Provezza made the strongest start to the Rolex TP52 World Championship today in Barcelona where three races were sailed in a light to moderate SSW'ly breeze.

After missing two days because of insufficient breezes as the worlds finally got under way Provezza once more showed the high level of consistency which is becoming their 2023 hallmark, returning 5,3,1 for the day to lead the 10 boat fleet by two points ahead of Tony Langley's British flagged Gladiator whilst Andy Soriano's Alegre lie third, just one point behind their second placed compatriots.

In the light breezes and flat water the speeds in this very closely matched, highly optimised TP52 fleet are very, very close. And so, just as was predicted before the championship by many of the afterguards, positions changes were all about by only small metres gained and lost around the three windward-leeward courses.

Defending world champions Quantum Racing powered by American Magic, welcoming back talisman Terry Hutchinson for the week as tactician in their new, 'young blood' lineup, started modestly with a ninth but showed encouraging signs in race 2 where they fought back for a fourth. But they were fouled in the third race which dropped them from a potential fourth or fifth to a seventh placed finish which sees them lying eighth overall.

And winners of the Royal Cup in Menorca last month, double world champions Platoon made a positive opening by winning the first race. After a fifth they led the event after two races but then two successive penalties for rules infringements, resulted in a ninth and Harm Muller-Spreer's team drop to fourth, six points off Provezza's leading aggregate.

Aegean Regatta
The 49 boats participating in the Aegean Regatta 2023 have arrived in Kardamyla, Chios, continuing their journey in the Northeast Aegean.

Strong north-westerly winds reaching 5 Beaufort locally helped the crews deploy their seamanship and cover the 30 nautical miles from Psara to Kardamyla fairly quickly.

With the completion of the 2nd race, in the ORC Performance category the boat ANATELOUSAAFRODITI of Giorgos Avgerinos from Thessaloniki took the lead with a first and a third place and in the ORC Sport category MELIPLOE of Thanasis Piniaris from Volos with two firsts!

Getting there - Double handed offshore series / Sea Ventures
Sea Ventures Kate Cope of the UK Double Handed Offshore Series says the format can provide more, rather than fewer, opportunities for young sailors

Now and again I hear the criticism that the double handed format is providing fewer opportunities for youngsters to enter or progress in offshore sailing. As my UK-based experience is the exact opposite of this, I thought I would share what was working, with the hope that it can inspire other countries to copy one of the UK initiatives.

When we set up the UK Double Handed Offshore Series in 2021, one of our early goals was to create pathways for young adults, typically in their early 20s, transitioning from dinghy classes to bigger boat racing. Just announcing the intention and creating a single point of contact for skippers and youngsters already got the ball rolling. Whilst I knew there were opportunities, I surprised myself just how many double handed skippers are looking for co-skippers to allow them to add more offshore races to their programmes or cover the inevitable gaps when co-skippers have other commitments.

Cup Spy : Wind arrives late in the day; Italians blast away
Three Cup Challengers again wanted to sail on Wednesday, but the breeze was a late-show after two days of no-show.

No racing was possible in the TP52 Worlds, also being staged in Barcelona, and racing was called off mid-afternoon.

What happened in the Cup - August 23 2023:

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - The Italians enjoyed a 10-13kt breeze and 27°C temperatures. They did not get their wish for a wavy seastate, and enjoyed flat water for the day.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing - got foiling late in the day, when a 4-6kt breeze arrived from 180° (S) after swinging from the East.

- American Magic - despite the light winds the US team did get foiling with two AC-40's with the AC37 Joint Recon observer calling the day a productive one for the US team. In the interview Michael Menninger says they saw breezes of up to 9kts

- Orient Express Racing Team - no report.

- INEOS Britannia - remained ashore

- Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail

Rested and ready, Tom Dolan fully prepared for La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec
A short summer 'staycation' - enjoying time resting and relaxing around his French home in Concarneau, Brittany - has been the final part of Irish skipper Tom Dolan's preparations for the 1850 nautical miles, three stage 2023 La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec solo offshore race which starts Sunday from Caen, Normandy and heads to Piriac-sur-mer via stops in Kinsale in his native Ireland and Roscoff in northern Brittany.

The pre-race rest was vital. The skipper of Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan identified how he was teetering on the edge of burnout a few weeks ago, following a busy season so far which included the Solo Maître CoQ, the Laura Vergne Trophy, his record attempt around Ireland, the Tour de Bretagne à la Voile and the Solo Guy Cotten - Concarneau. This last race should have served as a final dress rehearsal for La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec and Dolan was hoping for a podium but a couple of lacklustre results was a warning that he was tired and consequently made costly errors and he finished 12th overall.

"It is all good now. I am well rested, relaxed and ready. I have spent the last few weeks at home because I just did not want to add any stress by going on holiday at this point before the race. So I've stayed home, maximised my sleeping, eating very well, doing some sport and just chilling out as much as possible." Said Dolan on board Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan amidst the line up of 32 skippers in Caen ready to start this annual pinnacle race.
