The island of Psara welcomes the sailors of the Aegean Regatta
With the award ceremony on Tuesday night fell the curtain of the first leg of the Aegean Regatta 2023 from Molyvos, Mytilene, to Psara.

The first race was exciting as the strong northerly winds push the boats to cover the 65 nautical mile distance fast enough and reach the island, from Monday afternoon onwards.

The French boat LIBERTE entered first in the port of Psara, but with the time correction, the first place in the ORC Performance category went to the boat ERYTOS II, skippered by Kostas Manthos. In ORC Sport, first place for the boat MELIPLOE from Volos with the skipper Thanasis Piniaris.

The first boats per class in the first leg:

ORC Performance
1. Erytos Ii - Skipper Kostas Manthos
2. Liberte - Skipper Pierre Le Maout
3. Anateloussa Afroditi - Skipper Giorgos Avgerinos

ORC Sport
1. Meliploe - Skipper Thanasis Piniaris
2. Hakuna Matata - Skipper Dimitris Sofitsis
3. Exit - Skipper Derman Emre

On Wednesday morning, the 49 sail boats of the Aegean Regatta started the second race from Psara to Kardamyla in Chios, a distance of about 30 nautical miles.

No racing at the Rolex TP52 World Championship Wednesday
Light winds persisted through the afternoon today at the Rolex TP52 World Championship in Barcelona meaning racing remained on hold until the race officer Maria Torrijo decided there was no option other than to display the AP over A flags and cancel for the day.

With the prospect of a positive change in the weather due for Thursday the objective now is to try to run three races Thursday and Friday and two on the final day Saturday.

Good time for a rethink - Ronstan
Ronstan Ronstan's new Orbit Winch makes easing sheets and halyards a lot easier

Winches for operating sails have been around for roughly 50 to 60 years, and they still look more or less the same. Even technically, winches operate basically the same way they did when Grandpa was in his prime. So what's the big deal, when Ronstan now launches their new Orbit Winch?

'Well, a lot of things', says Thomas Galster, content manager at Ronstan. 'More than anything, for most of our customers it's the QuickTrim feature. Every sailor knows the endless procedure of making minor trim changes. Especially with jib sheets, but it could be a halyard or basically any trim line. When the line needs to be tightened, it's easy enough - just take a turn or two on the winch handle.

But easing is a bit more time consuming: You need to remove the handle, take the line off the top, ease the line and then put everything back. In most styles of sailing this has to be done with short intervals. So making that part easier would make a real difference. And this is exactly what we have done with the new Orbit Winch: All you have to do is use one hand to rotate the self-tailing top, and now you can just ease the line out as needed with your other hand. You don't have to take the handle off or even remove the line from the jaws.'

A flying start for Orient Express Racing Team's all-new AC40 in Barcelona
The Orient Express Racing Team's newly arrived AC40 one-design foiling monohull has taken to the water - and the air - in her first test sail off the America's Cup venue in Barcelona.

After a 'tow test' at the weekend behind the team's chase boat to check and test the AC40's onboard systems, the full-on racing machine went into sailing mode today - with almost exactly a year to go to the America's Cup Challenger Selection Series.

Skipper and pilot Quentin Delapierre, fellow pilot Kevin Peponnet, and trimmers Matthieu Vandamme and Jason Saunders, were able to get their first hands-on experience aboard the yacht which will prove crucial in their preparation ahead of the arrival of the AC75 America's Cup race boat next year.

Despite light wind conditions the team were able to get the AC40 foiling clear above the calm waters off Barcelona during her first test sail.

"It felt really good – I was really happy that we were able to foil after towing out behind the RIB in just 6.5 knots," said Delapierre. "We need time to sail the boat now, to learn it and feel it. There will be a lot of sailing ahead in the coming weeks." -- Sabina Mollart-Rogerson

Match racing starts tomorrow at 15th edition of the Detroit Cup
A talented field of 12 teams hailing from Australia, England, Ireland, New Zealand and the USA will start Round Robin competition tomorrow in the 15th edition of the Detroit Cup, hosted by Bayview Yacht Club. This World Sailing Grade 2 match racing event - part of the World Match Racing Tour - is the second of four Grade 2 events in the US Grand Slam series and is raced in equally-matched Ultimate 20's on courses set in front of BYC on the Detroit River.

The roster of skippers this year is impressive, starting with Chris Poole (USA) from Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, ranked No. 1 in the World Ranking List. Poole has not only done well here in previous Detroit Cups, he and his Riptide Racing Team won this year's Congressional Cup, the only Grade 1 match race event in the US, as well as the World Championship in Sydney last December.

Next in the rankings is Megan Thomson (NZL) from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron at 19th in the Open rankings and 4th in the Women's rankings, followed by Cole Tapper (AUS) from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia who is ranked 26th in the world, last year's Australian Youth Match Race Champion and runner-up at this year's Governor's Cup. Tapper finished third at last year's Detroit Cup.

Racing is scheduled to start tomorrow at 10:00 AM, with the format of Round Robin, Quarter-Final, Semi's and Finals running daily until Sunday, August 27th.-- Dobbs Davis

Cup Spy August 22: 172 years on from the first race
Three Cup Challengers wanted to sail on Tuesday, the anniversary of the race for the race around the Isle of Wight, which evolved into the America's Cup.

For the second successive day, the breeze was effectively a no-show in Barcelona. In Cagliari, Luna Rossa again got in a solid four hour session. Orient Express Racing Team (FRA) sailed their AC40-OD, for the first time, in Barcelona.

What happened in the Cup - August 22 2023:

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - The Italians once again enjoyed near perfect foiling conditions, at Cagliari, Sardinia, with a 10-16kt breeze, steady in direction and clear skies. They sailed their LEQ12 test boat and are now on Day 83 of their America's Cup program - the most days of any team to date in this America's Cup cycle in a single boat.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing back from a holiday break tried sailing their AC75 from the new permanent base in Barcelona, but never got enough breeze to get foiling.

- Orient Express Racing Team had their first sail, in their AC40-OD (#9 off the McConaghy Boats production line) and got sailing after being towed up onto their foils by a Chase Boat

- INEOS Britannia - remained ashore

- Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail

- American Magic did not sail

The 'Donnelly' Name In 18 Footers

Donnelly Honouring a pioneer boat builder in the 18s

One of the famous boat names in the 18 footers 131-year history is 'Donnelly', which originated in the 1890s, to honour a pioneer boat builder, and remained on Sydney Harbour until the early 1970s.

It began when George Holmes ordered a boat to be built by one of Sydney's finest boat builders, Joe Donnelly, which first raced at the Balmain Regatta in 1898.

The boat was named Donnelly I (after the builder) and carried a blue diamond in a red diamond sail patch/insignia on her mainsail.

According to Ian Smith's 'The Open Boat' website, Donnelly I dimensions were 18' x 3'4" x 2'6".

She raced at Johnstones Bay Sailing Club (JBSC) for a few seasons (until that club disbanded) and the Sydney Flying Squadron, and later raced with the Sydney Sailing Club after the demise of JBSC.

Respect and Aspiration Power Two New Entries into Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup
The enduring allure of the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup is most evident in the teams and sailors from around the globe that return to this seaside city every two years to compete in sailing's premiere Corinthian big-boat regatta. For the eighth edition, which will start on Tuesday, September 12, and run for five days, there will be just two new clubs participating: Corinthian Yacht Club from Marblehead, Mass., and Yacht Club Punta Del Este from Uruguay. Both come in with lofty aspirations and& a healthy respect for the competition and the unique challenges of this ultimate one-design regatta.

"In 2024, Yacht Club Punta Del Este will reach a remarkable 100 years of being active, and being asked to attend this event is a fantastic way to start off this special year," says Aldo Centanaro, the tactician for Uruguayan team. "This is a great opportunity for us to make new friends and give our best effort in the upcoming races. It's an exciting chance for us to show our skills and perform to the best of our abilities."

The Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup is a biennial regatta hosted by the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I. Since the event was first run in 2009, it has attracted top amateur sailors from 51 of the world's most prestigious yacht clubs from 22 countries. After five editions in the Swan 42 class, the 2023 event will be the third sailed in the IC37, designed by Mark Mills.

The final stage of preparations for each of the 19 teams competing will take place in the days just prior to the regatta, with the boats available for training from Wedneday, September 6. Mandatory practice starts on Sunday, September 10, with the first race on Tuesday, September 12. A live race-by-race broadcast of the regatta will start on Wednesday, September 13. -- Stuart Streuli
