Barcelona swelters as winds fail but conditions set to improve at Rolex TP52 World Championship
Although the winds proved too light for competition on the first day of the Rolex TP52 World Championship which is based at the city's Marina Vela, the prospects look set to improve over the coming days.

With the 37th America's Cup host city sweltering in high summer temperatures Principal Race Officer Maria Torrijo did all she could to ensure the fleet only went afloat when she felt there was high probability of racing. But an initial six to seven knot breeze faded and the boats returned to the dock at just after 1600hrs after a couple of hours of waiting.

" I am thinking it is about to get a little better."

James Lyne, the Quantum Racing powered by American Magic coach asserts,

"We need to get rid of the high pressure to our west and the temperature inversion where there is this hotter air above us than on the surface here, and it is looking like we should get decent sea breeze for the rest of the week. It will be later tomorrow maybe but as the SW gradient wind builds we get classic Barcelona."

The Aegean Regatta 2023 set sails for Psara
The Aegean Regatta starts its journey for the 22nd year with the participation of 49 boats, sailing from Molyvos, Mytilene, on Monday morning , heading to Psara, in a distance of 65 nautical miles.

Secretary General of the Aegean and Islands Policy Mr. Manolis Koutoulakis:

"The Aegean Regatta opens its sails again this year, for a 22nd time and the version of each year is better than the previous one. When it started, back in 2001, it was one of the first regattas of that kind in the Aegean Sea. We are very happy because each year participation of sailors grows and this year we have also many sailors from abroad. All these people who participate in the regatta every year are also the ambassadors of the Aegean Sea islands. In addition to the competitive part, the crews will visit and live the experience of the islands that host them. It will be a great week and in cooperation with the local authorities we have prepared the infrastructure as well as a very rich cultural program". -- Dimos Bouloukos

Smart Choice - Doyle Sails
Doyle Sails For four years Brad Marsh, now chief technology officer at Doyle Sails, arguably had one of the most stressful jobs in international sailing. As technical director for the SailGP circuit, he was responsible for the logistics of moving the event infrastructure from venue to venue around the world against immutable deadlines, setting up the onshore facilities and then overseeing the technical crews that maintain the fleet of F50 foiling catamarans at the centre of the sailing spectacular.

Throw in a global pandemic with its attendant supply chain and communications disruptions and the challenge becomes mind boggling. 'It was a wild ride,' he concedes. Yet, even as the event and the number of global venues grew ever more complex, the team he led thrived under the pressure.

However, with a professional sailing resumé that includes the America's Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, TP52 and maxi circuit racing, the SailGP "circus master" role exposed a personal problem: while tackling the multi-dimensional demands of the job satisfied his passion for problem-solving, it came at the expense of his passion for sailing.

Howth's Young Solo Sailors Maintain MG Motor "Club of Year" Spirit With Two National Titles
At Howth, we might find a reasonable assumption by outsiders that the recent hand-over of the MG Motor "Sailing Club of the Year 2023 " award has resulted in a certain resting on the laurels. And perhaps it has. But thanks to the enthusiasm of the large and varied junior sailing establishment in this numerically enormous club, the senior Howth YC pillars of society have been able to do a certain amount of laurel-reclining while the Young Turks afloat have been shaking the trees to ensure that the tastiest fruits of success have continued to fall neatly beside the HYC Flag Officers for gracious consumption at their Lordships' leisure.

In the Optimists at Ballyholme, young Harry Dunne of Howth was on top form, getting ahead and staying ahead to win clearly overall by 13pts to the 22 of Gemma Brady of the National and Lough Derg, with Charlotte Crosbie of the special Cork-Spain/Javea linkup third with 25.

But the Lasers back home in Howth went right to the wire, with Jamie McMahon of the host club eventually wearing down a seemingly unassailable early lead established by visiting Australian star Isaac Schotte of Brisbane. In an eight-race series, things went pear-shaped for Schotte with a BFD in Race 6, but he was back in possible contention with a first to the second of McMahon in Race 7.

Thus in classic style it came down to the final race, which McMahon clinched to total 12 with Schotte second on 13 and Royal Cork's Jonathan O'Shaughnessy – always there or thereabouts in the overall frame – taking fourth and third overall on 19.

New Zealand crew books Olympic berth in 49ers for Paris
Isaac McHardie and Will McKenzie saved their best for last by taking out the 49er medal race in commanding fashion overnight - for a first race win at the Sailing World Championships in The Hague.

The young pair led from start to finish in light conditions to claim victory by more than 20 seconds, with the result lifting them from sixth to fourth in the final standings - only 7.2 points behind Spain's Diego Botin and Florian Trittel.

While it wasn't enough for New Zealand's first medal of the week, McHardie and McKenzie did ensure that the country will be represented in the class at next year's Olympic Games.

"Qualifying New Zealand for the Olympics was one of our goals along the way and to achieve that is pretty cool," McHardie said.

Their next objective is to earn selection for the sole 49er spot in Paris, with training partners Logan Dunning Beck and Oscar Gunn sure to mount a strong challenge.

Cup Spy August 21: No wind in Barcelona as 12 month countdown for the Cup begins
Three teams ventured out on Monday - now a year and a day from the start of the 2024 America's Cup Regattas. Only one managed to sail - Luna Rossa got another good foiling breeze in Cagliari and were the only one of six teams to sail. At Port Olimpic winds were recorded at an average of 5kts gusting 5.5kts the strongest breeze of the day. On the water the teams saw less than half that wind strength.

What happened in the Cup - August 21, 2023:

- Luna Rossa sailed their LEQ12 in Cagliari in good foiling test conditions with a 10-15kt breeze and flat seas.

- American Magic left to go training in Barcelona, but the predicted breeze did not eventuate and the exercise developed into a series of boat and new sail geometry checks.

- Emirates Team NZ also left with hopes of a breeze, which didn't eventuate. There were some tow starts but this was a day when the Defender recorded zero tacks and gybes.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing stayed ashore but did stand up their rig in their AC40.

- INEOS Britannia did not attempt sail - as they indicated in their previous report, but will sail on Tuesday.

- Orient Express Team - no further report beyond their launching of the AC40-OD, they were expected to sail this week. From images shot by other AC37 Joint Recon teams, the team did step the mast on Orient Express Racing's AC40-OD.

Dahles Auto/Audi Half Ton Classics Cup

Half Ton Classics Cup On Friday 19th August the Bagdad2 Friends-team led by Borre Hekk Paulsen took the highly coveted Half Ton Classics Cup with a nearly perfect sheet after 10 races. Sailing a 1985 Berret-Finot design, which went through a big refit by its previous owers, the team left only the long distance race and 1 windward-leeward race to her competitors. Two other Norwegian halftonners RAMPAGE and KING ONE completed the podium.

The Royal Norwegian Sailing Union (KNS) and the Hankø Yacht Club, in close cooperation with the Half Ton Class Norway, have organized a perfect event for a total of 33 teams, amongst which 3 teams from Belgium and 1 team from the UK. The Half Ton 'true spirit' reigned all along the race week. This was emphasized at the final prizegiving, first by a heart-warming ode to and standing ovation for Martin Kamperhaug -the initiator of the halftonner revival in Norway- who received his weight (and more) in champagne, followed by the remittance of the Half Ton True Spirit Trophy. All the teams present almost unanimously choose to award this trophy to the father-mother-daughter-son team on board HUGIN.

Team CONCORDE won the Corinthian Trophy for being the best team without any professional on board and the women of MIDNIGHT X won the 'All Female Team' prize.

The atmosphere during the entire week was so good that plans are already being made to return to Hankø for a next edition, and why not to Marstrand or Sandhamn (SWE) in a few years time, when the Baltic halftonner fleet will be in full force again.
