Gilmour Takes The Lead On Penultimate Day Of 75th Edinburgh Cup
Cowes, UK - Winning the Dragon Edinburgh Cup has always been regarded as one of the great challenges in one design keelboat sailing, and this 75th edition is proving as challenging as any of its predecessors. Having spent a windless second day ashore, the 41 strong fleet was back out in the Central Solent today for races three and four of the eight race series, and what cracking races they were. The wind was in the southeast quadrant, shifty and ranging from 10 to 15 knots with occasional short bursts up to 18. With the exception of the first race, a building ebb tide made left the obvious way to go upwind, but how far left was the big question.

Peter Gilmour's was the team of the day, claiming two impressive wins and jumping from fourth to first overall. For others though it was a day of mixed fortunes with some leaping up the scoreboard and others tumbling down.

Overnight leader Lawrie Smith didn't fare so well in race three, finishing twelfth, but came back in race two with a second to put him six points behind Gilmour in second. Grant Gordon went into the day in third and came out in third thanks to a ninth and fourth, and now sits three points behind Smith.

Peter Cunningham was the big mover of the day as he and his team found their rhythm in the boat and got to grips with those ever-tricky Solent tides. Race three saw them take second place behind Gilmour and they followed it up with a third in race four, shooting up the overall standings from tenth to fourth.

Double medal joy for Japan at Allianz Sailing World Championships
Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka celebrated a sensational 470 gold on a brilliant day for Japan while Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti retained their Nacra 17 crown at the Allianz Sailing World Championships.

Okada and Yoshioka had guaranteed top spot in the Mixed 470 even before the medal race, and were joined on the podium by compatriots Tetsuya Isozaki and Yurie Seki in bronze.

That followed the first medal ceremony in Scheveningen with Tita and Banti (ITA) confirming their status as the king and queen of the Nacra 17 by winning the medal race in the class they have dominated all week.

Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka dominated the 470 class from start to finish at these Allianz Sailing World Championships, meaning that they could enjoy the medal race with the pressure off.

They did just that as they eased to fifth place, celebrating their world title a year after coming seventh in this class.

Rolex World Sailors of the Year Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti were not mathematically guaranteed gold before the start of the Nacra 17 medal race, but any thoughts that they might relinquish their title were quickly banished.

Needing only to avoid disaster, the Italians showed that there is no one who can match their speed in The Hague, racing to victory by more than 300 metres despite Dutch duo Laila van der Meer and Bjarne Bouwer making the fastest start.

Ocean Globe Race The further the Whitbread Race and its successors move away from its roots the more the event struggled. Something that has not escaped the attentions of oceanic racing impressario Don MacIntyre...

Southampton used to be known as the "home of ocean racing" when large sailing events were hosted in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Now it will be the start and finish port again. MDL Marinas (MDL) will host the first Ocean Globe Race at its Ocean Village Marina before the 14-boat fleet sets out from the Solent o n 10 September to once again race around the world. This will be a four-leg, 30,000-nautical mile marathon that harks back 50 years to the very roots of ocean racing. It will finish at Ocean Village around 1 April 2024.

The Ocean Globe Race has been conceived to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973-74 and, with perfect synergy, MDL is celebrating 50 years since the company founded its flourishing marina business on the River Thames.

Battle lines drawn for next week's Rolex TP52 World Championship Barcelona 2023
When the Rolex TP52 World Championship Barcelona 2023 opens next week on the 37th America's Cup waters off Barcelona, Spain next week there will be no clear favourite. And as Cup teams ramp up their training and testing off Barcelona, eyes will inevitably focus on the white hot TP52 fleet with which many sailors have personal history, a national allegiance, or are just interested, discerning fans.

From the fleet of 10 boats from seven different nations which will line up on what is considered an open, very challenging race arena, more than half the teams are widely considered to have an equally realistic chance of securing the 2023 world title.

Were the champions Quantum Racing fielding the same team as they won the world title with in Cascais last year, they would doubtless rank as out and out favourites. But after changing their focus to develop young talent for the American Magic America's Cup team, bringing in a group of younger sailors, the US flagged team have been close in Saint-Tropez, Scarlino and Menorca, but have not won a regatta this year.

In Barcelona, Quantum Racing powered by American Magic will welcome the return of American Magic's highly successful Terry Hutchinson as tactician, for this one regatta only. But Hutchinson is very short on high level, cutting edge racing this season and, also, it will certainly take time to gel with the existing young afterguard.

Competition starts with the official practice races on Monday August 21st with points racing running Tuesday to Saturday.

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, September 29 to October 8
10 days of nautical passion at sea and on land for the 25th edition of Les Voiles

A prestigious and not-to-be-missed sailing event organised for the 25th time by the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez brings together a fleet of over 250 boats on the same stretch of water. The world's finest boats in the Maxi, Modern and Classic Classes are expected in and around the port of Saint-Tropez from September 29 to bring the excitement of another edition to life in a brand new format, with an onshore race village set up for the first time on the seawall Môle Jean Réveille.

A great gathering on the water Big news this year is that the Saint-Tropez regatta will open on Sunday, October 1 with an impressive fleet of nearly 50 Maxis. Maxi yachts are yachts over 18.28 metres (60 foot) in length, designed to be on the leading-edge of yacht racing. These yachts are often characterised by their state-of-the-art equipment and exclusive designs, combining comfort and performance The incredible Wally yachts are an exceptional illustration of this, with a strong presence this year with 10 boats including the brand new Y3K designed by Judel and Vrolik.

In the Moderns, a new division of the competitors into 4 classes, instead of the 5 last year, should reshuffle the cards for certain series and potentially open the door to a few reversals of fortune. This will not put off Laurent Courbin's crew, flying the colours of Stade Français, on their 53 foot Yagiza, who are hoping to make it a double after their victory in the North Sails Trophy in 2022. The same determination also applies to the TP52 Nanoq team sailed by Prince Frederik of Denmark, the undisputed winners of the BMW Trophy.

As for the Classics, the 2023 edition looks set to be a banner year, with 5 two- or three-masted schooners between 35 and 55 metres overall, including the elegant Elena of London, as well as a very fine series of eleven 12m J1, the sleek monohulls some twenty metres long made famous for being the support boats for the America's Cup from 1958 to 1987.

2023 Programme

200 Years After Darwin, Tall Ship Recreates HMS Beagle's Famed Voyage
Oosterschelde. Photo credit Oosterschelde Foundation. Click on image to enlarge.

Oosterschelde A team of tall-ship operators are about to embark on a recreation of Charles Darwin's famous voyage of discovery, which led directly to the development of the theory of evolution.

A group of environmental researchers and adventure travelers will soon set sail from Plymouth on a three-masted schooner for a planetary conservation expedition, dubbed Darwin200. In 1831, Darwin set sail from the same port aboard the survey ship HMS Beagle. Modern day young conservationists will embark on a two-year expedition to recreate Darwin's experience aboard the Dutch tall ship Oosterschelde, and organizers have rebranded the ship as the "world's most exciting classroom."

On Tuesday, August 15, Oosterschelde will set sail on a 40,000 nautical mile voyage following the route taken by Darwin. During the expedition, the ship will drop anchor in 32 ports across four continents, and it will invite young environmentalists aboard for educational and conservation missions at these stopovers.
