Three Scheveningen golds claimed at Allianz Sailing World Championships
Three Allianz Sailing World Championships gold medals were decided in Scheveningen on Wednesday including a home pair making it a hat-trick of titles.

Bart Lambriex and Floris van der Werken went into the day in second place in the 49er class, but made an emphatic move to clinch gold ahead of the medal race, to add to the titles they won in 2021 and 2022.

Matching them in the 49erFX were Sweden's Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler, while a third gold medal of the day was clinched by Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka (JPN) in the Mixed 470.

"Cinderella" Alison clinches gold
An historic para sailing regatta came to a close in dramatic fashion as Betsy Alison brought down the curtain in Braassemermeer to claim Allianz Sailing World Championship gold.

This was the first time that para events were part of the Sailing World Championships and the competition delivered across the three classes.

Alison, a five-time Rolex Sailor of the Year, only came back from surgery in November, but held her nerve to take gold in the Women's Hansa 303, clinching the final race ahead of rival Olga Gornas-Grudzien.

Elsewhere, Piotr Cichocki was victorious in the Men's Hansa 303, Heiko Kroger secured a tenth world title in the 2.4m Norlin OD and Ange Margaron and Olivier Ducruix won the RS Venture Connect.

Cichocki's gold, combined with Gornas-Grudzien's silver, helped Poland claim the Nations Bowl for the most successful nation in the para sailing.

No wind but partying aplenty on day two of 75th Edinburgh Cup
Cowes, UK - Whilst the sun shone and temperatures hit the mid 20s, sadly the wind gods did not smile on day two of the 75th Edinburgh Cup and UK Dragon Grand Prix 2023 in Cowes, sponsored by Clear Solutions. Rob Brown and his Royal Yacht Squadron Race Committee initially announced a two-hour postponement to see if a sea breeze would develop, and then extended it to three hours when signs of cumulus clouds began to develop over the mainland shore. But sadly, it was not to be and at 12.30 the wise decision was made to abandon racing for the day and allow everyone to enjoy a good lunch instead.

In welcoming everyone to the Prize Giving, Regatta Chair Gavia Wilkinson-Cox joked that in this 75th year, it seemed appropriate that the weather gods had help reinstate one of the original traditions of the Edinburgh Cup. Historically the regatta was run over a full week with the Wednesday being a lay day to enable the competitors to relax and enjoy the venue they were visiting. Although not intentional, Gavia was delighted that this tradition had been temporarily revived.

Fortunately the weather forecast for third day of the competition looks much more promising with more sunshine and an east-north-easterly breeze of 17 to 25 knots. The Race Committee may opt to run additional races to catch up the schedule. Two of the eight scheduled races have now been completed and the regatta continues until Friday 18 August. A single scoring discard will be introduced once five races have been completed.

As Doyle Sails snap up (yet) another goodie

For four years Brad Marsh, now chief technology officer at Doyle Sails, arguably had one of the most stressful jobs in international sailing. As technical director for the SailGP circuit, he was responsible for the logistics of moving the event infrastructure from venue to venue around the world against immutable deadlines, setting up the onshore facilities and then overseeing the technical crews that maintain the fleet of F50 foiling catamarans at the centre of the sailing spectacular.

Youth Take On The World In Ocean Globe Race
Retro Sailing All The Rage! Being old-fashioned is back in fashion - if the numbers are anything to go by! At 1300hr, 10th September, 14 Ocean Globe Race yachts will set sail from the Royal Yacht Squadron start line, Cowes. Onboard, 31 under 24-year-olds step back in time, forsaking modern technology, Kindles, iPhones and Spotify in favour of sextants, paper charts, 'real books' and cassette recorders. Racing like it's 1973 is trendy. Slowing down in this high-speed, high-tech world feels good!

And it's not just the youngsters who are embracing this new revolution. For the 218 adventurers embarking on the OGR, it's proving to be way more than just a 'round-the-world' race. It's a recognition of sailing history, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Whitbread. It's a unique opportunity to race simple traditional yachts, a nod to seafarers' past. The OGR sailors, hailing from 23 different countries are a rare breed, ranging in age from 17 to 73 years, united by a passion to live a life less ordinary.

This eight months' adventure, split into four legs, sailing around the three great Capes, Africa's Cape of Good Hope, Australia's Cape Leeuwin, and South America's notorious Cape Horn, has attracted an eclectic mix of dedicated sailors, befitting such an adventure.

It's no accident there's such a large youth participation in the OGR. As part of the Notice of Race, all yachts must have at least one under 24-year-old on board. The youngest sailor is 17 years old Ryder Ellis. He's sailing on Australian entrant Explorer AU (28) from Cape Town home to New Zealand. He is one of the four young people who'll sail on the Swan 57 as part of the McIntyre Adventure Youth Opportunity Scheme, sponsored by race organiser, and Explorer owner, Don McIntyre. And it's the sheer adventure of the race that has attracted so many young crews.

Van Den Heede: Before the Great Departure on the horizon for the GSC
Behind the scenes of the Global Solo Challenge, we meet a true old salt, the famous French solo navigator Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, who offers his valuable advice and support to many skippers. Deeply convinced of the solidarity among sailors, he will follow this staggered-start event with great passion, a challenge that promises to be thrilling and full of suspense.

This veteran of circumnavigations has completed six: the BOC Challenge in 1986 and 1995, the Vendée Globe in 1989-1990 and 1992-1993, and the Global Challenge in 2004, during which he completed a westward circumnavigation against prevailing winds and currents, becoming the undisputed holder of this record. He also enriched his achievements by winning the first edition of the modern Golden Globe Race (GGR) in 2018, an "old-fashioned" race, navigating with a sextant and without external communications, following in the footsteps of the pioneers who undertook this non-stop journey for the first time in history in 1968.

Regarding the formula of the Global Solo Challenge, the new non-stop round-the-world challenge that will start on August 26th from A Coruna, Jean-Luc Van Den Heede commented: "It's an exciting format. Many people dream of going around the world, and it's much more thrilling to participate in competition with other sailors, rather than embarking on such an endeavor alone. I think this innovative concept will allow very different boats, of different classes, to compete in real time. The idea of having staggered starts to conclude with a theoretical real-time finish is very enticing. It will be a sort of chase race, where the fastest will try to catch up with the slowest, who started earlier. It will be fun."

Airlie Beach Race Week: Final races to decide trophies in tight pointscores
The final races at Airlie Beach Race Week (ABRW) today will decide the winners across the various divisions at Whitsunday Sailing Club's (WSC) 35th running of its signature event and signs are that racing should get away from 11.30am.

Conditions look to replicate those of yesterday, "Winds maybe even lighter and further to the left," Race Officer Kevin Wilson told the on water team this morning. Wilson said to make the most of the light air, all racing would take place on Pioneer Bay, the Extreme 40 multihulls away from 11.35am.

All others will follow on at five minute intervals on two courses taking in Grimston and Bluff, with the exception of the Weta trimarans, which will sail windward/leeward races.

As per the Sailing Instructions, all races must start by 1pm and finish by 4pm, to allow time for competitors to pack their boats away and attend the final prize giving at WSC where they will also be entertained into the night by Flying Double Front Kick.

Today is the final day of Airlie Beach Race Week Festival of Sailing, supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland. It is a feature on the 'It's Live! in Queensland' events calendar. -- Di Pearson/ABRW media

A new Marine Trade Centre is being developed in Scotland as part of a lease extension at James Watt Marina which is managed by Swanwick, UK-based Marina Projects Ltd (MPL).

The company has played a pivotal role in securing a lease for the expansion of James Watt Marina on the River Clyde in Greenock. The lease of the Great Harbour site covers some 6ha of land and water and will see the development of a comprehensive Marine Trade Centre.

In back-to-back arrangements, MPL working with James Watt Marina has also secured an anchor tenant for the site. Serco will provide commercial marine services including towage and passenger transfer from the site. Their lease at Great Harbour provides for Serco's dedicated use of the extensive deep water berthing and the west jetty.

MPL was involved in negotiating the commercial terms with Serco and also establishing a site-wide masterplan and business case for the wider Marine Trade Centre proposals, which took full account of the Serco operations. The masterplan also covers the remainder of the berthing, commercial property, boat lifting and storage operations.

SailGP has highlighted the successes and challenges facing sport in the pursuit of inclusive and sustainable growth in its latest Purpose & Impact Report, released today.

Building on the foundation of its inaugural report last year, SailGP's Season 3 Purpose & Impact Report - which can be accessed here - underpins SailGP's ongoing commitment to embed environmental and social sustainability into the fabric of sport. It has been developed to report on progress, challenge the traditional view of sustainability in the sector and inspire other sports and businesses to take action.

An important step was becoming the first sport to disclose its carbon strategy with the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) - an international non-profit organization that works with companies and cities to manage their environmental impacts. Demonstrating SailGP's commitment to accountability, transparency and continuous environmental improvement, the league achieved a B- score (rated A to D-) that it will aim to improve upon in future seasons.

SailGP made strong progress in its ambition to be 100 percent powered by clean energy on-shore and on-water by 2025. SailGP delivered five events 100 percent powered by clean energy in Season 3, an increase from one in Season 2. A total of 236 tonnes of carbon was saved by powering SailGP's events by clean energy - the equivalent of shipping one F50 catamaran around the world 150 times.
