2022 ORC World Champions defend their titles for 2023
Kiel, Germany - After two light and wet windward-leeward races held today, the final results after six days of inshore and offshore racing reveal that that last year's boats and/or teams have defended their titles for the 2023 ORC World Championship.

Karl Kwok (HKG)'s TP 52 Beau Geste dominated the 15 entries in Class A all week, with wins earned in every race except for a 4th place in the non-discardable Offshore Race. The ORC Class A World Champion victory for this international team of 14 sailors from Australia, China, Great Britain, New Zealand and the USA was not as easy as it looked: winning margins against their rivals were as close as 13 seconds in corrected time.

In Class B the new Gold medalists similarly dominated their class of 29 entries, winning five of 10 races on a boat that also won the Class B title last year's ORC Worlds in Porto Cervo. Marcin Sutkowski's Grand Soleil 44P Windwhisper 44 (POL) has won the title of Class B ORC World Champions this year with a team of nine sailors from Poland, Portugal and Norway. The racing was also close in this class, with even the last race tied for second and third place between the Poles and Peter Buhl's Swan 42 Sirena (DEN), so they were each scored 2.5 points each.

The final results among the 67 entries in Class C were not determined until today due to lead changes in the class throughout the week and discards applied after the first race today.

A measurement protest on Juss Ojala's J-112E Matilda 4 (EST) caused them to be rescored with a new and slightly faster rating, pushing them out of the lead as well and much closer in points to their nearest rivals.

Yet in the end the reigning champions prevailed: Ott Kikkas's Italia 11.98 SUGAR 3 (EST) racing with a team of eight sailors from Estonia and Italy are the 2023 Class C World Champions, a title they also earned in 2019 and finished as runners-up in 2021.

The next edition of the ORC World Championship will be at New York Yacht Club in Newport, USA over 27 September - 5 October 2024. -- Dobbs Davis

Charisma Claims RC44 World Championship With Race To Spare
The Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes and the Solent laid on a World Championship worthy of the leading owner-driver one design class, the RC44. Over four days, the nine teams enjoyed top of the range conditions, plus the usual complexities of British tides and fast moving weather systems. Despite these challenges Nico Poons, tactician Hamish Pepper and the crew of Charisma defended their World Championship title. Unlike the title they won last year in Portorož, Slovenia in ultra-light conditions, this time, the latter part of the regatta was held in 20 knot winds, more typically 'Charisma conditions' which contributed to their victory with a race to spare.

Charisma began the day five points ahead of Team Nika, with Chris Bake's Team Aqua and Hugues Lepic's Aleph Racing a further two and three points astern respectively.

While Charisma basked in glory, the story for the rest of the fleet was far from over. With Charisma gone and Louise Morton's all-female Bullet crew having retired, there was still the tightest fight in the final race for the remaining podium positions with Aleph Racing one point ahead of Team Aqua and Team Nika.

Ultimately Team Aqua, the day one leader, finally came good to win the race and claim second overall.

From here the 44Cup moves to Alcaidesa Marina next to Gibraltar for the penultimate event of the season, over 18-22 October.

Allianz Sailing World Championships
Olympic champion Matt Wearn insists he can summon the spirit of Tokyo to battle from behind and conjure a stirring comeback at the Allianz Sailing World Championships.

The recent Paris 2024 Test Event winner endured a difficult day on Dutch waters as Croatian Tonci Stipanovic racked up a brilliant pair of bullets to lead over Great Britain's Micky Beckett on the opening day of ILCA 7 racing.

Hungarian Maria Erdi and Italian Carolina Albano sit level at the top of the ILCA 6 standings ahead of British sailor Daisy Collingridge while in the 49er, Spanish stars Diego Botin and Florian Trittel are now hot on the heels of home favourites Bart Lambriex and Floris van de Werken after a superb Sunday in the Netherlands.

Sweden's Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler still sit at the summit of the 49erFX standings in splendid isolation, while Italians Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti continued to set the red-hot pace in the Nacra 17.

And in the para classes, German giant Heiko Kroeger and French duo Ange Margaron and Olivier Ducruix extended their perfect records as American great Betsy Alison and Polish powerhouse Piotr Cichocki also enjoyed days to remember.

New York Yacht Club Repeats as Hinman Masters Champions
Starting strong is important in any team race regatta. Equally as valuable is improving along the way. The victories earned by the New York Yacht Club - McDowell team over the first two days of the New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy put the home team in a position to challenge Southern Yacht Club for the title. But the losses provided them with the lessons they needed to win it.

After three full round-robins among the eight teams, Southern, with 17 wins, and New York McDowell, with 16 wins, had separated from the remaining teams. A best-of-five championship series would determine the winner. New York only needed three races to seal the win for the second year in a row. Eastport (Md.) Yacht Club, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club from Oyster Bay, N.Y., and Noroton Yacht Club from Darien, Conn., rounded out the top five.

The New York Yacht Club's team racing schedule concludes this coming weekend with the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race, August 18 to 20; skippers must be at least 60 years of age and crew at least 50. -- Stuart Streuli

Final Standings (Total Round-Robin Wins)

2. Southern Yacht Club (New Orleans) (17)

Scarlet Oyster powers home in RORC Channel Race
RORC Channel Race
Start 12 August | Approx. 145nm
Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in association with the Royal Yacht Squadron

Ross Applebey's Oyster 48 Scarlet Oyster has won the 2023 RORC Channel Race overall under IRC. The top three boats in IRC Two filled the overall race podium with less than four minutes between them after IRC time correction. Ian Hoddle's Sun Fast 3300 Game On, racing with Ollie Wyatt was second overall and won IRC Two-Handed. Third overall was Gareth Edmondson's JPK 1030 Insert Coin. Congratulations to all the IRC Class winners including IRC Zero winner Henry Bateson's Iceni 39 Andrasta, skippered by Bill Edgerton with the RORC Griffin Youth Team. In IRC One, Gilles Fournier & Corinne Migraine's J/133 Pintia was the winner.

The penultimate race of the RORC Season's Points Championship proved to be a windy affair with 20-25 knots of south westerly wind for most of 145nm race. Starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron Line the fleet beat west leaving North Head to Port to avoid the worst effects of the tide and wind at The Needles. The beat continued as far as Peveril Ledge off Swanage. A downwind sleigh ride back to the southside of the Isle of Wight and as far east as Shoreham Outfall, had boats hitting over 20 knots of boat speed. In the hours of darkness, a series of shorter legs, at a variety of wind angles, tested the boat handling and stamina of the teams. The finish was at Browndown in the Eastern Solent.

Seven boats that retired during The Channel Race have been accounted for with no reports of any injuries to racing crew. Sun Fast 3300 Atomic was dismasted in 20 knots of wind, east of Bembridge IOW. Ronan Banim's Galahad of Cowes and Mark Rayward's Stormcloud should both be commended; both retired from the race to stand by to assist Atomic.

The final race of the 2023 RORC Season's Points Championship will be the Salcombe Gin Castle Rock Race starting on the Royal Yacht Squadron Line, Friday 01 September from 1800 BST. The Salcombe Gin Castle Rock Race is also Race One of the IRC Double Handed National Championship. AC40 Grand Prix Circuit
The revolutionary AC40 foiling yacht, designed by Emirates Team New Zealand, is now available to private owners and syndicates to compete in a new AC40 Grand Prix circuit.

The AC40 is undoubtedly the world's fastest production boat - by quite some margin. With speeds well over three times the wind speed and top speeds in excess of 50 knots, the yachts are incredibly exciting to sail. Thanks to a supplied electronics package and automated control system, they are also accessible to sailors who may not have an Olympic medal to their name.

The AC40 was conceived by Emirates Team New Zealand as a strict one-design 40-foot version of the AC75 yachts that dazzled the world in the 36th America's Cup. Leading up to the 37th America's Cup, the new class of AC40s will see huge exposure in 2023, being raced by AC teams in preliminary regattas in Vilanova and Jeddah. In 2024, the Youth and Women's America's Cup in Barcelona will also be raced in AC40s, with 12 international teams committed to both events.

With nine AC40s already launched and three more currently in production, the AC40's exclusive builder McConaghy Boats has a strong mandate from private owners and syndicates to create a new grand prix circuit for the AC40 class.

The AC40 Management Group is focussed on establishing a class of privately owned AC40s to add to the existing yachts built for the America's cup. The fleet of privately owned and skippered AC40s will participate in both circuits and championship racing, providing an extraordinary experience for the lucky few who have the means and ambition to participate in the most exciting form of sailing around.

The class is organising video conferences to discuss the plans, from events to shared services, on August 31st and September 5th

Cup Spy August 11: American Magic dominates with three wins - Day 2 Test Racing
Today was the second of three days for the teams to test the race management and broadcast systems ahead of the first of three Preliminary Events.

Check back for additional content, sailing video and interviews.

Four teams participated in today's racing all sailing AC40 One Designs.

What happened in the Cup - August 11 2023:

- Emirates Team New Zealand, American Magic, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and INEOS Britannia all participated in the test racing. Alinghi Red Bull Racing did not race.

- American Magic came away very happy with three wins from four races against the Italian Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. The Americans were passed by the Italians while leading but coming off their foils in a wobbly moment. Otherwise it would have been four from four for the Americans in a big performance turnaround - with co-helmsmen Tom Slingsby and Paul Goodison, both Olympic Gold medalists, showing the New York Yacht Club team will be a force to be reckoned with over the coming 12-14months.

- Luna Rossa had an easy win over Emirates Team NZ in the video below, getting ahead at the start and appearing to extend. According to the AC37 Joint Recon Team report the outcome of the second race was similar. Kiwi coach, Ray Davies was complimentary of the Italian performance after the racing.

- Great Britain led at the first mark in their short race with the Kiwis, but while trying to perform a 270 degree turn to reduce their healthy margin managed to "stuff" the AC40 in a 40kt nosedive. Skipper Ben Ainslie said the ferocity of the nosedive was such he was surprised that the boat and rig emerged intact. The force of the nosedive ripped the clew out of the jib, ending their racing for the day.

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).
