A second day of fast coastal racing
In this second day of racing at the 2023 ORC World Championship, the persistent low-pressure center in southern Scandinavia continued to drive strong westerly winds in the Kieler Bucht. Accordingly, race managers from Kieler Yacht-Club set a coastal course for Classes B and C with early leaders emerging in these classes after two races.

An unfortunate secondary effect of these strong westerly winds was to drive water in the Kieler Bucht to the east, thus lowering water levels in the west, and causing the deep draft entries in Class A to remain at their slips at the venue in Schilksee Harbor due to a lack of depth to allow them to leave the marina. Nonetheless, at wind speeds of 20-30 knots today's conditions were brisk but quite raceable from start in the inner Kiel fiord out to the same mark as yesterday at the mouth of the Eckernfiord, and return to the finish in front of Schilksee.

Performance Curve Scoring was done for a constructed course of 16.8 miles.

The other outstanding feature of the weather today was the intermittent driving rain, lightning and thunderstorm squalls that buffeted the fleet.

In Class B the first boat around the first reach mark was Marcin Sutkowski's Grand Soleil 44P WINDWHISPER 44 (POL), the reigning ORC Class B World Champion boat with a new Polish crew. This team was nearly caught at the bottom of the downwind leg by Sampsa Vehkamaki's Landmark 43 MADAME GREY (FIN), yet they managed to hold the lead to the finish and defeat the Finns by 43 seconds in elapsed time and to win by 3:39 in corrected time over runner-up SIRENA (DEN), Peter Buhl's Swan 42.

ORC World Championship 2023 - Summary of the results after 2 races scored:

Class A - no races on Day 2
1. Beau Geste TP52 - Karl Kwok (HKG)
2. Outsider TP52 - Tilmar Hansen (GER)

Class B

2. Sirena Swan 42 - Peter Buhl (DEN) 2+2=4
3. White Shadow Landmark 43 - Torkjel Valland (NOR) 6+3=9

Class C
1. Shadow J-112E - Harles Liiv (EST) 1+1=2
2. Aquaplay J-112 - Max Habeck (GER) 4+1=5
3. Matilda 4 J-112E - Juss Ojala (EST) 1+4=5

La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec: 33 Skippers Take Part in the 1900-Mile Race
The 54th edition of the Solitaire du Figaro Paprec will kick off on August 27 from Caen (Calvados) for the 33 sailors competing this year. On the menu for the premier race of the French Elite Ocean Racing Championship, of which Paprec has become the Title Partner: three committed legs leading from Caen to Piriac-sur-Mer (Loire-Atlantique), via Kinsale (Ireland) and Roscoff in Morlaix Bay (Finistere). Once again, the strong line-up will include 11 rookies and 6 foreign sailors.

A flagship event on the Figaro Beneteau circuit and the French Elite Ocean Racing Championship of which it is the epilogue, the Solitaire du Figaro Paprec, which is contested on equal terms aboard Figaro BENETEAU 3s, has seen the emergence of a number of ocean racing legends over the years. With a coefficient of 5, the highest in the calendar, each year it crowns the sailor who has shown the most daring, courage, talent and consistency.

Conceived by Yann Chateau, Race Director of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec, the course for the 2023 edition features three committed legs of over 600 nautical miles, offering varied playgrounds for Figarists: Caen - Kinsale (610 mn), Kinsale - Baie de Morlaix (630 mn) and Baie de Morlaix - Piriac-sur-Mer (620 mn), for a total of 1860 nautical miles. As a major partner of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec until 2026, Loire-Atlantique will once again host the finish of the race. This format, which will see the sailors spend four days and four nights at sea on each leg.f the Paprec Group, sees these difficulties as openings in the competition that will enable the strategists and the bold to win.

This year, the Solitaire du Figaro Paprec will be marked by the enhancement of the coastal courses with the creation of the Paprec Trophy, which will ensure the show in the host towns and impose an initial hierarchy after around 1 hour of racing. It should be noted that the intermediate sprints introduced last year will be repeated this year: on each stage, the first to arrive at a defined stopping point will benefit from a 5-minute bonus, the 2nd from 3 minutes and the 3rd from 1 minute, which will be deducted from their race time. Just the thing to spice up the game!

Ireland's Tom Dolan in the Solitaire Figaro
The Solitaire du Figaro is coming up fast on the horizon and Tom Dolan, the solo skipper of Smurfit Kappa-Kingspan is now devoting all his time to final preparations.

This time La Solitaire du Figaro consists of three stages which will take the fleet and Tom first of all to his home country, to Kinsale in Ireland then to the Bay of , in Morlaix before finishing in Piriac sur Mer on the French Atlantic coast near Saint Nazaire.

Tom has been working very hard all season to ensure that he will be in the best possible position to give all he can to achieve a good result on the race, maybe especially into Ireland, but his goal is to finish on the podium at the end of the Solitaire du Figaro.

Famous French ocean race Michel Desjoyeaux who is the only solo sailor to twice win the Vendée Globe wins and three Solitaire du Figaros, attests "the Solitaire is the most difficult offshore race there is".

Really, since January Tom has been working towards this pinnacle event of the season. And now with less than 20 days to go to the start he is totally focused and well set, he is ready and the boat is ready.

RORC Channel Race
RYS Line Cowes - Around Marks - Solent Finish
Start: Saturday 12 August from 0900 BST
Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in association with the Royal Yacht Squadron.

Starting on the Saturday 12th August, The RORC Channel Race is the penultimate race of the RORC Season's Points Championship. While the fleet will be small in comparison to the world record entry for the Rolex Fastnet Race, competition will be fierce for scoring points towards the largest racing series in the world of offshore racing. Once weather forecasts have been analysed, the RORC Race Team will set a course starting to the west from the Royal Yacht Squadron Line of approximately 120nm. Spectators can watch the start from Cowes Parade and along the shore of the Western Solent.

Over a hundred sailors will be competing in the RORC Channel Race which is well short of the 3000 which competed in the Rolex Fastnet Race, but it is encouraging to see that over 40% of the Channel Race sailors are under 40 years old and a quarter are women in the 18-25 age bracket. Channel Race Trophies and Medallions will be presented on Saturday 2nd September at the RORC Cowes Clubhouse. The Royal Ocean Racing Club's Channel Race is the 14th race of the RORC Season's Points Championship, the largest racing series in the world of offshore racing. -- Louay Habib/RORC

Cup Spy August 7: Swiss pick a great day to test the AC75
Three teams started the new week at Barcelona sailing in a fresh seabreeze, clear skies, and a confused seaway. The Swiss sailed their AC75, the Kiwis launched their AC40 One Design, while the Brits got back into their T6 LEQ12 test boat.

What happened in the Cup - August 7, 2023:

- Emirates Team New Zealand launched their just arrived AC40 One Design, which arrived from New Zealand a couple of days earlier. Today was strictly a commissioning exercise. It is not clear as to what direction they are going to proceed. It would seem that their hydrogen powered foiling chaseboat is about to make its debut in Barcelona.

- INEOS Britannia looked to have a solid incident free session. They did seem to be too close to the surface on several occasions, immersing their deep underbody, and with it difficult to tell if they were foiling or not.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing went back to their AC75, which had no obvious upgrades, or new foils. From the videos in RFS they appeared to have flight control issues. The Swiss are apparently running their own flight control software. Their AC75 (B1) looked to be barely under control at times but settled down and was sailing well at the end of the session.

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).

Regata Puig Vela Classica Barcelona
They are undoubtedly some of the most graceful yachts ever to sail in the America's Cup and for 29 years between 1958 and 1987 they provided some of the most intriguing battles that the oldest competition in international sports has ever witnessed.

And the exciting news is that in 2024, the 12 Metre fleet are re-convening in Barcelona to take part in the '17th Regata Puig Vela Classica' run by the Real Club Nautic de Barcelona for ten days between the 1st-10th September 2024, during the America's Cup Challenger Selection Series, and mooring at the RCNB's marina in the heart of the America's Cup Village. There will be four days of racing between the 4th-7th September 2024 inclusive, and all divisions of 12 Metres are welcome with up to twenty-five yachts expected to be in Barcelona for this magnificent festival of sailing.

The 'Golden Era' of the enormous J-Class yachts that had last competed for the Cup in 1937 with the 'superboat' Ranger defeating Sir TOM Sopwith's Endeavour II was over, as harsh post-war economic times precluded the building and campaigning of these vessels. The New York Yacht Club recognised the desire for a smaller and more cost-effective class to re-start the competition and the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes agreed, sending the David Boyd designed Sceptre to face the Olin Stephens designed Columbia in 1958.

The Americans successfully defended eight times in the Match against challengers from Britain and Australia through to 1983 when finally, the longest winning streak in sports history was ended by the radical winged-keel yacht Australia II helmed by John Bertrand and designed by the genius of Ben Lexcen. The Cup was taken to Fremantle Western Australia for what would be the final time that 12 Metres competed for the trophy in a memorable regatta in the big seas and winds of Gage Roads with the Australian Kookaburra III Task Force Syndicate losing to Dennis Conner's Stars 'n' Stripes '87 after a thrilling series that catapulted the America's Cup into the mainstream.

The 12 Metre fleet was eventually replaced by the IACC class after the Deed of Gift Match in 1988 but they were anything but forgotten and fleets have sprung up most notably in North America and in both North and Southern Europe ever since, with owners restoring and updating these beautiful yachts with modern technology.

For spectators, seeing these amazing boats in the harbour and sailing out just beyond the America's Cup course area off the Barceloneta beachfront will be a perfect juxtaposition between the historical and the new and provide an incredible reference point for the America's Cup event.
