Cowes Week - Day 7 Round Up
Cowes Week 2023 finished on a high note today with a northwesterly breeze between 7-12kts allowing all classes to enjoy a glorious day of tactical racing. With so much to play for in what turned out to be a no-discard series (as a result of two days of abandoned racing due to high winds), not only was there plenty of inter-class rivalry, with results going down to the wire, but also with the Black and White Groups, and the overall Cowes Week winner to be decided.

Given the testing light winds and strong Spring tides today, the race committee led by Laurence Mead (Race Director) managed, as far as possible, to set courses to suit each class. And as a final showdown, all classes, except for the XODs, were treated to a Royal Yacht Squadron-line finish.

IRC 4 has seen a real mix in performance this week with four different winners including some Cowes Week regulars including Peter Rutter's Half Tonner Quokka 9, David Greenhalgh's J/92 J'ronimo, Jon Powell's SJ320 Betty, and David Murrin's Laurent Giles pretty, classic sloop Cetewayo. Cetewayo also won today's light airs race but, the overall winner with a consistent string of results was Quokka 9, with Harry Heijst's S&S 41 Winsome in second place overall.

Other popular winners among presentations this evening included identical triplets Charlie, Thomas and Harry White who, sailing their Squib Kestrel, won the Montgomery Estate Planning Under 25 Trophy for the second year running. Kai Hockley won the Musto Young Skipper's Trophy for his performance helming Palava an Etchells, while the best female helm award for the Ariel Trophy went to Grace Cecil-Wright.

29er World Championships
First ever Open World Championship title winners Clementine and Nathan Van Steenberge from Ireland also win the overall World Championships by 16 points. With 8-15 knots north westerly wind on the final day of racing, shifty conditions with a moderate sea state, the Irish siblings sailed a standout final day of four solid races with no large discard to the overall Championship win.

Sailing a consistent series over the week long championships, which has tested the fleet in every condition from 25 knots, flat water in Weymouth Harbour down to 6-10 knots in the bay, accompanied by very large swell, chop and significant wind shifts.

In the Women's fleet, racing was similarly close and came down to a protest in the final races. With Italians Malika Bellomi and Beatrice Conti just managing to hold on to the Women's World Championship title just ahead of Emily and Jessica Riordan from Ireland. Ebba and Ellen Fredriksson from Sweden took third, also winning the Silver fleet by 28 points.

Men's Under 17 Champions were Dutch team Folkert Van Surksum and Lars Ganzevles whilst Women's Under 17 winners were Emily Polson and Tiffany Mak from Hong Kong. Open Under 17 winners were Panna Széll and Bruno Schneider from Hungary so we can watch this space for an exciting future in the sport.

A very new world! - Shogun Yachts
Shogun Yachts Forget what you thought you knew about performance cruisers, this rather aggressive-looking beast is anything but average…

In a world where nearly all new products follow a defined trend, it feels reassuring to know that someone out there has invented a boat that is like nothing else. Shogun 43 is a raised middle finger to the established mass market. And she is the most ambitious, ambiguous boat imaginable.

Have you also spent long evenings making sketches of your perfect boat? Just to see how it would look, if you could decide all for yourself? And have you also dreamed of how amazing it would be to have someone build this boat - exactly the way you wanted it? That is basically what Shogun Yachts from Sweden has done. At first, the result was a 50-footer by the name of Shogun 50, launched in 2019 and flying a bit under the radar due to the pandemic. Now a smaller sister is born. Its name is Shogun 43.

Two perfect scores are the outstanding performances at the 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE
The 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE finished today with two exciting final races in moderate westerly breezes and sunshine. Two boats completed the Finals series with perfect scores Javier Banderas' Teatro Soho CaixaBank actually won all 11 of their races in Majorica ORC 2 over the six days of racing whilst the Italian crew on Enzo de Blazio's Ca'n Eduardo Scugnizza were unbeaten during their finals series.

Overall winners of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE principal trophies are Scugnizza and Patakín.

Marcus Brennecke's Hatari crew led by tactician Markus Wieser kept their composure and kept fighting to return two good second places today which allowed the German flagged team to retain the ClubSwan 50 title they won last year. Brennecke's lucky mascot onboard today was his daughter who was celebrating her tenth birthday. Hatari had to work hardest in the second race today to be sure of winning which they do with a clear six points margin over compatriot Sonke Meir Sawatzki and his crew on NiRaMo - led by Cameron Appleton - who finished second.

Eastern Yacht Club Rises to the Occasion, Claims Second Consecutive Morgan Cup Title
The New York Yacht Club helped usher in a new era of adult team racing with the creation of the New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy in 2000. That race, which requires skippers to be at least 45 years of age and crew to be over 40, was soon followed by the New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Morgan Cup, an all-ages event, in 2003 and, in 2010, the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race Regatta, which mandates skippers be at least 60 years of age and crew at least 50. The three team races are traditionally held over consecutive weekends in August at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court, using the Club's fleet of 22 Sonar keelboats, and annually attract some of the best adult team racers in the United States and Europe. New York Yacht Club Regatta Association sponsors for 2023 include Helly Hansen, Hammetts Hotel and Safe Harbor Marinas.

Eastern Yacht Club won a respectable six of nine matches in Friday's round-robin, then went 1-3 in a secondary round-robin on Saturday among the top five teams. But that was enough to earn a spot in the knock-out tournament, where Eastern Yacht Club beat New York Yacht Club-Shanahan in the quarterfinals and Corinthian Yacht Club in the semis before dispatching Newport Harbor Yacht Club 2-0 in the finals to claim the trophy.

Final Standings (Total Round Robin Wins)
1. Eastern Yacht Club (7 wins)
2. Newport Harbor Yacht Club (9)
3. Corinthian Yacht Club (10)
4. New York Yacht Club-Sertl (9)
5. New York Yacht Club-Shanahan (7) and San Diego Yacht Club (7)
7. St. Francis Yacht Club (San Francisco) (8)
8. Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) (8)
9. Bristol (R.I.) Yacht Club (4)
10. Larchmont (N.Y.) Yacht Club (1)

2023 ORC World Championship starts Monday with windy Coastal Race
Based on a forecast of west-northwest gale-force winds of 25 to over 40 knots in the Kiel Bucht region tomorrow, race managers from Kiel Yacht Club have amended the format of the 2023 ORC World Championship to start with a shorter Coastal Race rather than the Offshore long-distance race. Fifteen teams from five nations will be competing in Class A, 30 entries from 9 nations in Class B, and 68 teams from 12 nations in Class C for a total of 113 entries.

The Coastal Course options presented are designed as 15-19 miles in length, with the final decision made tomorrow morning in the starting sequence. All classes will start in front of Kiel Yacht Club at Düsternbrook Harbor in the inner part of the Kiel fjord, with Class A to start at 1100, followed in 5-minute intervals by Class B and Class C. With 68 teams entered, Class C will be divided into Yellow and Blue groups, with 34 boats competing against each other and group members re-shuffled daily so that every team will compete against every other team at least once by the close of racing next Saturday 12 August.

Simon 'SiFi' Fisher named winner of the 2023 Magnus Olsson Prize
Simon Fisher has been named the 10th recipient of the Magnus 'Mange' Olsson Prize, awarded annually to an individual who has made an impactful contribution to the sport of sailing.

Certainly this description fits Simon Fisher, known to all as SiFi, like a well-worn sailing glove. SiFi has competed in The Ocean Race six consecutive times, beginning in 2005-06, and has won the race twice, including the last edition with 11th Hour Racing Team. He is the only navigator in race history to earn this achievement.

During his 20-year career in the Race, SiFi has seen the race evolve from the Volvo Open 70 class, through the one-design VO65s (where he won the race in 2014-15 with skipper Ian Walker on board Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing), and now again to the flying, foiling IMOCAs.

For over 10 years, Fisher has been a director of Diverse Performance Systems, which provides onboard systems for racing and performance cruising boats as well as superyachts where his vast experience as navigator has benefitted many projects.

The 10th Magnus Olsson Prize will be presented to Simon Fisher together with scholarship to young sailors at a Mange-style dinner ceremony in Stockholm on 22nd August.

Ocean Globe 50th Anniversary Reunion
There's been an enormous response to the Whitbread Veterans' Reunion - celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Whitbread Round the World Race. An exceptional evening of memories, old photos, race footage, expert commentary, and the opportunity for old friends and rivals to relive their racing days is planned. The call is still out for all veterans to join the party!

Julian Morris, who crewed on Creighton's Naturally in the 1989/90 race, is one of the many Whitbread veterans attending the reunion. He reminisces about the race: "It was at times everything - amusing, significant, terrifying, and bizarre. The best part was making the friendships that 35 years later are still going strong."

The first Whitbread was an adventure like no other in the world of sailing. On 8th September 1973, 17 yachts crewed by those determined to live a life less ordinary set sail from Portsmouth to take on a unique challenge. The Whitbread Round The World Race was born.

On its 50th anniversary, the OGR and McIntyre Adventure are celebrating this epic feat by bringing together those sailors who dared to dream and take on the oceans.

The reunion is also the perfect opportunity for the crew of the 14 yachts taking part in the OGR to meet and gain some inside knowledge before slipping lines on September 10th from MDL's Ocean Village Marina, Southampton UK for the start of their own epic adventure.

Don McIntyre, Founder of the Ocean Globe Race, together with Boatshed International invite you as a Whitbread Veteran for a "Quiet Little Drink!" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Whitbread Round the World Race
Tuesday 5th September 5.30 - 7.00pm
MDL, Ocean Village Southampton
