The King and Aifos win coastal race
At the 41st Copa del Rey Mapfre today the Majorica ORC classes raced an inshore coastal course of between 25 and 30 miles which saw King Felipe triumph in the showcase Majorica ORC 1 on the TP52 Aifos. The One Designs continued with their diet of windward-leeward races on the Bay of Palma.

In Majorica ORC Class 1 HRH King Felipe and the crew of the Spanish Navy's TP52 Aifos scored their second win in a row, triumphing today on the 30 nautical miles coastal race. Aifos go into the Finals in third place. Javier Sanz and Christian Plump's ClubSwan 42 Palibex-Elena Nova finished fifth on the coastal race and finish the Preliminary Series with a lead of only half a point ahead of their Argentine rivals on the Swan 45 From Now On. Ironically, then, their lead actually doubles to one point as they start the Finals.

Majorica ORC 2 leaders, Javier Banderas' defending class champions, Teatro Soho Caixabank maintained their unbeaten record when they won the coastal inshore race by nearly five minutes today. Their 21 points lead aggregated so far of course drops to a Finals lead of a single point!

Winner of inaugural Cowes Week Youth Trophy announced
To celebrate Youth Day at Cowes Week on Wednesday 2 August, a new trophy - Cowes Week Youth Trophy - was awarded at a reception hosted by Montgomery Estate Planning this evening. This new trophy, to recognise outstanding commitment and achievement among the young sailors competing here at Cowes Week, is in addition to the Montgomery Estate Planning Under 25 Trophy and the Musto Young Skipper's Trophy.

The inaugural winner of this new award is Christopher-Joel Frederick (18) who has been has been a leading figure in Greig City Academy's Scaramouche Youth Sailing Project since its first appearance at Cowes Week back in 2016.

Christopher-Joel, from Tottenham, has been sailing for seven years and has grasped every sailing opportunity that has come his way. He has been a consistent part of the fundraising programme to enable his team and others in the Scaramouche programme to compete.

Coming from a non-sailing background and an inner-city community in London, Christopher-Joel has overcome very challenging circumstances. He is a shining example about how sailing can be used to transform a young person's life chances.

His passion for racing was recognised at the age of 13 when he completed his first Fastnet Race aboard Scaramouche. He then went onto restore and campaign Riot an Intro 22, which he and the team raced at Cowes Week three years ago. This was the boat that Christopher-Joel and team worked hard on, upgrading the systems, rig and sail plan with the great support of the late Sam Richmond from North Sails.

119 entries ready for 2023 ORC World Championship in Kiel
An impressive turnout of 119 yachts from 13 nations are registered for the 2023 ORC World Championship that starts one week from today, being held over August 4th to 12th in Kiel, Germany.

"We are more than satisfied with the quality and quantity," says a pleased organization manager Eckhard von der Mosel, who managed the 2014 ORC World Championship in Kiel. All reigning world champions, all medal winners of the 2021 World Championships and European champions from 2022 and 2023 have confirmed their attendance. This large international fleet will compete for the three World Championship titles in Class A (15 entries), Class B (32 entries) and Class C (72 entries).

This year Reinke, who has been chairman of the German Sailing Association's Sailing Committee since August last year and is regarded as an offshore racing expert, is again concentrating on race management. This internationally renowned Race Officer has officiated at four ORC World Championships (2005, 2009, 2014 and 2021) and has been involved in five European Championships, the America's Cup, the Farr 40 Circuit and race management at events throughout Europe.

For the 2023 ORC World Championship, the courses have already been tested in advance and the active participants were brought on board to help design them.

Growing number of cities express interest in hosting The Ocean Race Europe 2025
The second edition of the European offshore race is scheduled to start in the Baltic Sea and finish in the Mediterranean, with up to five stops along the way

The Ocean Race Europe is a north-south European offshore race scheduled to take place in 2025, ahead of the 2026/27 edition of the round-the-world Race. It will start in the Baltic Sea, sail across the North Sea and the Atlantic, through the Strait of Gibraltar, and finish in the Mediterranean, with up to five stops along the way (in addition to the start and finish ports).
Following The Ocean Race's announcement in May of the next major event in the 10 year planning cycle, European coastal cities from countries north, south, east and west are submitting their proposals to be a stopover Host City for this world-class event.

The Ocean Race has adopted a ten-year strategy that includes the next two editions of The Ocean Race, in 2026/27 and 2030/31, and two editions of The Ocean Race Europe, in 2025 and 2029. This long term strategy provides a strong platform for host cities, commercial sponsors and partners for improved ocean health.

A list of technical requirements to host The Ocean Race Europe is available and the selection of successful cities will be based on their fulfilment as well as the overall vision and concept for the event.

Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race
URM Group is the Overall winner of the 2023 Peter Rysdyk Memorial Trophy for the 2023 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, while Andoo Comanche has claimed Line Honours.

This is the first in the six-race Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore 2023/24.

Philosopher, sailed by David Henry and Stephen Prince, took first prize in the Two-Handed IRC division (as well as IRC Div 3), while other notable mentions go to Tempo (IRC Div 1) and Popeye (IRC Div 2). (See full results below)

In what was a quintessential Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, conditions split the fleet. Many sailors chose to head out to sea to hunt for breeze, while the remainder hugged the shoreline, taking chances in typical light, to variable breezes. Whichever way the racing yachts chose to roam, it was a journey in which navigators and tacticians knocked heads throughout the night. Hedging bets, some of the mid-size fleet chose to chart a course that incorporated both approaches.

In what was overall a slow race, the results show that those who bet big, with long trips out to sea, won out in the end. Prize-winning crews, speaking after the race, reported heading anywhere from 30 to 100 nautical miles out to sea, to seek the speed afforded by a stronger breeze.

Upon reaching Rhodes, the boats found hospitality at the Rodos Marina, a significant sponsor of this exciting sporting event. The marina's facilities provided a comfortable and convenient base for the participants, adding to the overall success of the sailing week.

The Rodos Cup continues to be a thrilling and celebrated event for sailors and enthusiasts alike, showcasing the beauty of the Greek islands and the joy of sailing in these picturesque waters.

Small boat Atlantic crossing record attempt in a Mini 6.50
Jay Thompson is preparing to sail from New York to Lizard Point in his Mini 6.50 to establish a new small boat Atlantic crossing record.

No one has ever sailed a Mini 6.50 from Ambrose Light, New York to Lizard Point off Cornwall, but that is exactly what solo sailor Jay Thompson is hoping to do when he starts his small boat Atlantic crossing record attempt shortly.

Thompson's motivation is not just the record itself, but to prove that the Mini 6.50 has potential beyond the French-dominated Mini Transat, and that these seaworthy boats can be taken further afield.

He will be sailing across the North Atlantic on his Guillaume Verdier-designed foiling 21ft Mini 6.50, Speedy Gonzales, which he built himself in a hanger in France.

His record attempt can be followed at Coconut Sails Team: coconuts.is
