Cowes Week - Day 4 Round Up
Photo by Ingrid Abery, www.ingridabery.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Cowes Week Celebrations started early today when competitors were greeted with classic Cowes Week conditions of sunshine and winds ranging from 18-22kts, which led to another bracing day on the water. It was also Women's Day, which as always at Cowes Week, was well supported with female teams competing across most fleets.

The idea of Women's Day is to highlight the huge impact women have at Cowes Week and to inspire others to take part. With much to play for therefore, including the Mermaid Trophy for the highest placed female crew, the Ariel Trophy for the highest placed female helm, and the Women's Day Trophy, competition was intense throughout the day.

While the Cape 31s and the big boats in Black Group headed upwind to race in the western Solent, most other classes enjoyed challenging downwind starts out to the east and in the mid Solent. The conditions couldn't have been more ideal for the Royal Yacht Squadron line starts, which produced a spectacle of colourful mass spinnaker bursts as each start got underway.

In the full-on conditions out to the west, the Cape 31 fleet completed its short series with Sandra Askew and team on the USA-flagged Flying Jenny confirming their dominance of the fleet with another race win, which was enough for them to take the overall trophy. Christian Schwoerer and team on La Pericolosa had a good race finishing second today but second overall with 16pts was Niall Dowling's Arabella. -- Sue Pelling

Cowes Week

A fistful of firsts for three dominant teams at 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE
After an excellent second day of racing at the 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE three teams remain unbeaten. Jose María Meseguer's Pez de Abril crew lead the ClubSwan 42 class, Teatro Soho Caixabank is dominating Majorica ORC Class 2 and in the Herbalife J/70 fleet which started with three races today, the RCNP's Patakin skippered by Luis Albert Solana won all three races.

The leaders of the one design ClubSwan 42 class, which has Portuguese Olympic medallist Hugo Rocha calling tactics, are unbeaten after four races.

Meseguer's Pez de Abril (April Fool in Spanish) have already amassed a glorious lead of eight points and are maybe starting to look a little untouchable, the regatta scoring format means such leading margins are still cut back to a single point after tomorrow's racing as the event moves from the Preliminary Series phase to the Final Series.

Leonardo Ferragamo's World Champions Cuordileone - which is being steered by New Zealand helm Howard Spencer - moved to the top of the nine strong ClubSwan 50 class on the strength of a second and first today, lying one point ahead of Graeme Peterson's Moonlight. Perhaps more than any other class this white hot one design fleet becomes all the more exciting in the Finals phase and right now it is all about being consistent in the top half of the fleet.

SLAM clothing a great fit for Emirates Team New Zealand
SLAM Emirates Team New Zealand has welcomed the arrival of technical clothing from SLAM - the team's official apparel supplier - ahead of its defence of the 37th America's Cup in 2024.

The bespoke SLAM range will cater for the entire team from hi-tech kit for the race crew to shore and casual wear, with a replica version marketed worldwide.

The clothing was the result of a collaborative process between SLAM and Emirates Team New Zealand focused on materials, design and performance, with the range also benefitting from SLAM's seamless technology.

Team New Zealand put the collection through its paces off Barcelona and were delighted with the kit which embodies their and SLAM's shared dedication to excellence.

"For SLAM this is a true partnership. Both teams know what it takes to be successful, and we are determined to collaborate and support the New Zealand success story," said Enrico Chieffi, SLAM CEO.

Joining forces with Emirates Team New Zealand marks another major milestone on SLAM's mission to reaffirm its place among the world's best high-performance sailing brands.

Kevin Shoebridge, Emirates Team New Zealand COO, said: "The clothing is everything that we hoped for and expected from a brand like SLAM which has played a central role in the sailing world for over 40 years. The whole team is delighted to have them onboard for our defence."

The collection is available to Emirates Team New Zealand supporters online at slam.com and at the America's Cup store.

The long game - Jeddah
Jeddah Saudi Arabia is preparing to host its first ever America's Cup event as it reconnects with sailing and the sea

The second preliminary regatta of the 37th America's Cup is set to take place on the Red Sea in Jeddah from 30 November to 3 December 2023. This will be the only venue outside of Spain to host an America's Cup regatta during the 37th AC cycle.

The fleet of AC40s will compete out of Jeddah Yacht Marina just a few hundred metres away from the racetrack that has hosted the Saudi Arabia Formula One Grand Prix for the past two seasons.

Samia Bagdady, CEO of the Saudi Sailing Federation, was instrumental in bringing the regatta to Jeddah. Aged 36 and one of the first four women ever to head up a national sports federation in Saudi Arabia, Bagdady embodies the rapidly changing social and business culture of the country. A keen kiteboarder, she spent summers on the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, enjoying the water and learning to sail.

Global Solo Challenge Official Start Dates Announced
The Global Solo Challenge (GSC), the unique around-the-world, non-stop, solo sailing event, is pleased to announce the start dates for all participants. A thrilling mix of individuals and boats will commence their solo circumnavigation from A Coruña, Spain, between August 26, 2023, and January 6, 2024, embarking on a journey that promises to be as challenging as it is thrilling.

The GSC has been designed to provide sailors with an affordable and well-organised event, which prizes safety above all else. The challenge draws in a wide range of boats and participants, including solo sailors keen to test their mettle and display their competitive edge. It offers a unique, exhilarating spectacle for audiences worldwide, as well as an opportunity for sailors to test their skills.

The event format sees the boats grouped by performance characteristics and released in successive departures over several months, from August 26 to January 6. The aim is to create an engaging and dramatic competition where all entrants stand a fair chance of victory, with the first boat to cross the finish line declared the winner. The excitement lies in the pursuit: faster boats will attempt to catch up with slower ones, offering nail-biting suspense until the very end.

Epic Monday In Barcelona
Barcelona was a busy waterway on Monday with Emirates Team New Zealand, Alinghi Red Bull Racing and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli all out training on a perfect day with a building southerly breeze that topped out at around 17 knots in the late afternoon and a powerful easterly swell that made upwind data analysis a dark art. Towing out of the Port Vell at exactly the same time, Emirates Team New Zealand's AC75 'Te Rehutai' dominated the spectacle dwarfing Alinghi Red Bull Racing's modified AC40 but out on the water both were absolutely sending it around the racecourse area just off the Barceloneta beachfront in the lee of the prominent W-Hotel.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing looked very dialled-in today as they tested their newly declared wing that was previously on starboard but now is hanging off the port foil arm in a classic A/B testing programme. Arnaud Psarofaghis was joined by America's Cup legend and Sailing Team Adviser, Dean Barker, and it was noticeable just how accurate the steering was with both helms working hard on keeping very consistent lines and smooth, low turns whilst the trim team of Nicolas Rolaz and Bryan Mettraux showed real co-ordination with the helms, playing the mainsheet traveller beautifully with crisp and rapid adjustments to de-power and power on.

Anti-espionage program developed by Emirates Team NZ designer
A new program developed by Dan Bernasconi, designer and technical director of the Emirates Team New Zealand, for the 37th America's Cup being held in Barcelona next year, intends to try and minimise the amount of spying by other teams and any other parties.

"Knowing what the other teams are doing and spying on them has also always been part of the history of the America's Cup," acknowledges Bernasconi, designer, Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) technical director and creator of the anti-espionage program which has been operating for a year.

Bernasconi refers to a comment made during the very first AC race in 1851 which suggested, "It squeaks when there is little wind and roars when it sails to the limit." This was said of the schooner that in 1851 defeated the British yacht.

Design and technology have been - with the permission of the sailors - the key piece that has made the difference since the origins of this mythical event.

Bernasconi drew the rules of the anti-espionage program. Who better to protect the work of engineers and designers? Bernasconi directed the technical team of Emirates Team New Zealand which won the America's Cup against the Gate Yacht Club in 2017 and defended it in 2021 in Auckland against Luna Rossa's Prada Pirelli. He knows the dedication that the development of these boats requires to risk being copied. -- Ricard Bracons

Keeping a candle lit for U.S. singlehanded sailor Captain Donald Lawson
Back in the early spring of 2022, I caught wind of Captain Donald Lawson and his audacious plans to smash a laundry list of offshore passages and race records (35 in total, including plans for the fastest solo circumnavigation) as part of his Dark Seas project.

Over interviews, Lawson expressed confidence in his funding, but I'll admit to some skepticism when I'd see Lawson's social-media posts of the boat. He was clearly trying hard to get Defiant into fighting shape for his list of offshore endeavors, but the boat wasn't exactly looking Bristol. There were also some mishaps, as one can read about online, but I remained hopeful that these were just growing pains, even if their frequency started to suggest otherwise.

as it's been reported by The Baltimore Sun (which was a major source for this writing), Lawson's problems started accumulating not long after he left port. This began with the loss of auxiliary power, and compounded when problems arose with his hydraulic rigging (July 9).

Then, a storm on July 12 took out his generator, leaving Lawson without electricity. More specifically, this left him without an autopilot.

Hope initially burned that Lawson would be found in his upturned vessel, but, by Friday, July 28, the Mexican Coast Guard reportedly informed Jacqueline that they had conducted an inspection of the boat. Lawson, tragically, was not onboard.

While the situation looks grim, there's still some hope that Lawson might be alive aboard a liferaft (the vessel was reportedly sailing with two, plus a survival suit and electronic beacons). The water is warm in that part of the world, and history is rife with people who have survived long stretches adrift at sea, so I'm personally keeping a candle lit that this seemingly tragic situation somehow turns right.

Sail-World extends our thoughts and best wishes to Lawson, his wife, and to his family. -- David Schmidt Sail-World.com North American Editor
