Cowes Week Day 3 Round Up

Cowes Week With a forecast indicating a good chance of getting back on the water today following yesterday's abandonment of all racing, there was an air of excitement in Cowes this morning. Even the miserable early morning drizzle failed to dampen the spirits of competitors, and it was a relief it all went to plan on the racecourse particularly as it was in the presence of HRH the Princess Royal who was on the water watching the racing on Royal Navy Day and Charity Day. Back on shore competitors and visitors were treated to a parade of the Band of HM Royal Marines who marched through the town to the Royal Yacht Squadron.

The west-south-westerly airflow, although significantly less than yesterday's blow-out was still hitting 20+ kts, which made for another exciting day.

Revelling in the sort of conditions they were designed for was IRC 1, racing for the Sir Walter Preston Cup. After a close battle vying for position on the start line, the fleet headed out on a long tactical beat west to Hamstead Ledge where they enjoyed another day of close, 'round the cans' racing in the western Solent. It seemed to pay to stick to the left-hand side on the beat and take advantage of the outgoing tide.

Per Roman and his team on the Swedish flagged JPK 1180 Garm improved on their first day's second place with a race win today in winds that topped out at 23kts. They took the race from Alex and Andy Moore's Beneteau First 40 Tilt that finished sixth on the opening day.

IRC Class 5 produced one of the best starts of the day with the likes of Giovanni Belgrano's Whooper, and Peter and Alison Morton's Scherzo of Cowes, delighting spectators with a fine display of tactical racing by playing the shifts and working their way to windward while making the most of the strong, favourable ebbing tide.

However, it was Ian Handley and his family team aboard the 1996 Mustang 30 Mk2 Banter, who really impressed today after a poor start comeback that resulted in winning today's Dawson Trophy. -- Sue Pelling

Moonlight shines on Day 1 of 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE
Mallorca's renowned Bay of Palma dealt near perfect conditions, 10-13kts of wind and warm sunshine, for the six classes which opened the 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE today. All four Majorica ORC teams, 57 of them, opened their accounts with three windward-leeward races whilst the one design ClubSwan 50s and ClubSwan 42s had two contests.

Just over one year on from joining the highly competitive ClubSwan 50 fleet, Scottish ex-pat, Monaco based owner-helm Graeme Peterson and crew had their best day yet on Moonlight. Winning the first race for the ClubSwan 50 class and then finishing second Moonlight leads the one design fleet tied on the same three points aggregate as three times class winner, Hendrik Brandis' EarlyBird.

The fleets racing on course area Charlie, most offshore and in the middle of the Bay of Palma enjoyed two good races in breezes between nine and 12 knots. While the more easterly race course areas are typically left side favoured, today an open mind and good starts were essential.

Seahorse Sailor Of The Month
This month's nominees:

Cowes Week Day 3 Round Up Peter Becker (USA))
Trained and led by Becker, a Young American Sailing Academy crew won class in the 2016 Newport-Bermuda Race; but while the very fine achievement gathered a lot of press it was just a tiny part of all the hard work and commitment that Becker has put into the organisation as its head coach. With little time for nonsense, Becker likes to reminds his charges, ‘treat the boat like a jungle gym; it’s the best way to gain confidence, build your sea-legs... and enjoy the sport!’

Cowes Week Day 3 Round Up Travis Greenberg (USA)
Could this be the finest of the extraordinarily fine young sailors to emerge from the St Francis YC’s famous junior programme? Greenberg was runner-up at this year’s Optimist Worlds, gaining special praise for his exemplary sportsmanship when racing winner Henric Wigforss in the duo’s one-on-one battle during the final race. Alongside his sailing Greenberg is a brilliant pianist on a fast track with one of the world’s great musical academies. Travis Greenberg is now 13...

Cowes Week Day 3 Round Up Last Month's winner:
Peter Dubens (GBR)
‘Peter is the absolute sailing enthusiast. From large racer cruisers to Maxis to Cape 31s. Not sure how he’d go in a Laser, though!!! His passion for the sport was typified when he bought North Sails Group which he continues to build, while his support of both youth and elite sailors is to be admired’ - Peter Morton; ‘One of very few racing yacht owners who still paid their crew when there was no sailing during Covid, nuff said’ - Henry Bomby; ‘… and he’s a joy to sail with’ - Pom Green.

Cup Spy : American Magic goes past the point of no return
Two teams sailed on Thursday in the America's Cup development phase in Barcelona. The day was notable for a spectacular pitchpole capsize by one of American Magic's AC40's Magic. The other team, INEOS Britannia, trained alone in the AC40 but are expected to resume two boat testing next week.

What happened in the Cup - July 27, 2023:

- American Magic - again sailed both their AC40 hulls, in the same configuration as yesterday, with different test wings on each, with both carrying a One-Design wing foil on the port side foil arm and different development foils on the starboard foil arm. One of the AC40s - Magic - made a spectacular pitchpole towards the end of the session with the breeze hitting 18kts. The AC40 got too high on its foils, and the rudder elevator popped clear of the surface, triggering the pitchpole. There was no damage or injury.

- Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail.

- INEOS Britannia have set up in their new base in Barcelona, they sailed alone today, Thursday, and are expected to sail their AC40 against their test platform the LEQ12, T6.

- Luna Rossa - did not sail from either their Cagliari or Barcelona bases.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing did not sail. The team are moving into their new permanent base, in Port Vell.

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).

Andoo Comanche wins Line Honours in 2023 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race
Andoo Comanche has claimed Line Honours in the 384 nautical mile Noakes Sydney Gold Coast, for the second year in a row.

The VPLP/Verdier Maxi 100, skippered by John Winning Jr, crossed the line at 4.34am in 1 day, 15 hours, 34 minutes and 33 seconds to claim another win in the race that was created back in 1986 to promote tourism to South-East Queensland.

The majestic maxi finished off Main Beach in around 8-12 knots of breeze, as she came in from a wider position 50 miles out.

Winning Jr chartered the boat for a two-year period before last year's Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Race and has since campaigned it successfully in all major Australian events, including a Line Honours victory in the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The race from Sydney Harbour to a mark off Main Beach on the Gold Coast didn't offer optimum conditions for Andoo Comanche, who generally prefers stronger wind strength and reaching conditions for which her wider beam is most suited.

She has however, exhibited more versatility of late and it has become apparent since last year's Hamilton Island Race Week that she can triumph over her 100-foot competitors in a broader range of conditions.

Andoo Comanche led from start to finish, progressively extending her lead over the mini maxis, Anthony Johnston's URM Group and David Griffith's Whisper.

Booths Lionise the NACRA 17 Junior Worlds
Ruben and Rita Booth (AUS) hung on all week, surviving a late challenge, to win the 2023 Junior World Championships by three points. In the final race they found themselves outside of the top ten while Archie Gargett with Sarah Hoffman (AUS) charged forward into the race lead. With a five-point gap separating the two overall, that point gap was enough to reverse the overall leaderboard in the final race. But the Booth siblings focussed inward on their sailing and targeted passes, making strong gains on the middle lap. Come the final rounding, the Booths were up to sixth, with a bit more work to do. They found their downwind rhythm quickly and managed to pass three more boats to come third in the race, securing their first Junior World title.

The 2023 Junior World Championship was a great step forward for the Nacra 17 class, with a record 20 boats attending and 74 Nacra 15 teams being able to see the Olympic craft. The regatta was run spectacularly by the Royal Belgium Sailing Club, which is a fantastic beach club on the 'Belgium riviera'. With music playing and well over a hundred beach cats, boards, and other foilers it's clearly a place of great play and learning to sail.
