Stella Timoa Wins the Nab Tower Race at British Classic Week

British Classic Week With racing cancelled on day one of British Classic Week, owners and crew were keen to get out on the water for some action today.

The 30nm NAB Tower Race sponsored by Spirit Yachts was won by one of the smallest boats in the fleet, 26ft Stella Timoa. Line honours went to the new Spirit 72DH Gwenhyfar II.

It was an early start for the fleet, which set off from the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) line just after 8am. With 18 knots blowing from the SW and the tide running east, the yachts sailed a downwind start from the combined RYS line.

Most yachts opted to sail south of No Mans Land Fort staying in the stronger tide out to the NAB Tower. As the gusts crept up to 19-20 knots some held kites whilst others opted for Code Zeros or played it safe with white sails.

Rounding the tower to starboard, the fleet was close together and the overall win was anyone's for the taking on the homeward leg. The larger yachts beat back against a still oncoming tide whilst the smaller yachts took advantage of the favourable tidal change propelling them back to the finish.

After Race 1, the class leaders are Crusade (Class 1), Whooper (Class 2), and Timoa (Class 3).

Also racing at this year's British Classic Week is a 6mR class ahead of the Class World Championships in the Solent later this summer. Racing around the cans, Race 1 was one in the 6mR Open Class by Oiva and in the Classic Class by Silvervingen. -- Helen Porter

Rolex Fastnet Race MOCRA class - Rise of the 50 footers
The fastest sailor on the planet, Australian Paul Larsen leads an all-star cast on Allegra. Photo by Paul Wyeth, www.pwpictures.com. Click on image to enlarge.

Rolex Fastnet Race Much of the media oxygen in this year's special 50th edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's Rolex Fastnet Race will again be on the battle at the front of the fleet between the two 30m Ultime trimarans, Banque Populaire XI and SVR-Lazartigue, skippered respectively by Vendée Globe winners Armel le Cléac'h and François Gabart, or the close competition between the Ocean Fifty trimarans.

Another growth area in this year's record-sized fleet (currently standing at 460 entries) are the larger fast cruising catamarans in the MOCRA (Multihull Offshore Cruising and Racing Association) class. While conceptually not new, their popularity has swelled recently thanks to some strong French manufacturers, such as Gunboat, Marsaudon Composites and Outremer. Also, that you can race your luxury floating apartment - complete with your own ensuite cabin - preposterously fast, has attracted several more 'experienced' racers, including former IMOCA and ORMA 60/MOD70 skippers Roland Jourdain and Marc Guillemot.

Jourdain, best known for his two IMOCA class victories in the Route du Rhum, will be racing the customised Outremer 59 We Explore. He set up the Explore Foundation to back maritime projects helping in the transition towards a more sustainable future, including an expedition in the wake of Charles Darwin, comparing biodiversity today to 200 years ago and another developing plastic collection and recycling. While Jourdain's catamaran has been built from the moulds of an Outremer 59 catamaran, it is groundbreaking in that 50% of its laminate is flax fibre (linseed). -- James Boyd

Five-medal haul sets British Sailing Team on path to Paris 2024
Britain's elite sailors brought home five medals from the Paris 2024 test event - a promising sign just one year out from next summer's Games.

Four silver medals and one bronze were won as fourteen of the country's best dinghy, windsurf and kite racers took on the world's best in Marseille, the host city for the Paris 2024 sailing competition.

Among those picking up silverware were Tokyo 2020 medallists Emma Wilson, John Gimson and Anna Burnet. Wilson scooped silver in the foiling iQFOiL class, due to make its Olympic debut next summer, while Gimson and Burnet took bronze in the Nacra 17 multihull class.

The British Sailing Team will have little time to rest and recuperate before heading to the Sailing World Championships in The Hague, The Netherlands.

More than 60 British Sailing Team athletes will be among 1,400 sailors from the across the globe expected to attend.

The regatta is a once-a-cycle event where the world championship titles for all ten Olympic classes are up for grabs at the same time.

It's also the first opportunity for nations to qualify for a spot on the start line at the Olympics, doubling the significance of the regatta.

Cup Spy : Kiwis throw down the gauntlet in Barcelona
Emirates Team New Zealand became the fourth team to begin sailing from Barcelona, the venue for the 37th America's Cup. The team sailed their AC75, the current America's Cup champion in a fresh breeze - which was in contrast to the light airs of earlier in the week.

What happened in the Cup - July 14, 2023:

The breeze came back at Barcelona, building rapidly to 16kts gusting 20kts. Besides the Kiwis, three other teams sailed out of Barcelona.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed their AC75, and had another good day, sailing without major incident and only missing six tacks/gybes which were rated as "touch and goes" out of 56 maneuvers.

- Luna Rossa - we have no report from AC37 Joint Recon Team, or images of them sailing from one of the other Recon teams (none are assigned to teams sailing only One Design AC40's, but assume they were sailing.

- American Magic - sailed their AC40 One Design and their AC40/LEQ12 test boat. Unfortunately the the USA team continued to have technical issues with their LEQ12, but stayed on the water debugging the boat. At the end of the day, the LEQ12 appeared to be functioning normally.

- Emirates Team New Zealand launched their AC75 and had a four hour sail, which has got the team off to a good start.

- INEOS Britannia will not be sailing until August 1, and are transiting to Barcelona from their pre-Cup base in Mallorca.

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).

Musto Skiff 2023 Worlds - Day 1
Photo by Emilio Santinelli. Click on image for photo gallery.

Musto Skiff Today delivered perfect Garda winds for the first day of the ACO 12th Musto Skiff World Championships at Torbole, Lake Garda.

The name of the game for those of us outside the top 10 seemed to be keeping out of trouble, finding a lane, getting the boat round the course, and trying to remember to have fun.

Downwind, most went for the gybe-set chasing the pressure towards the cliffs. Drop to the knot and send it. Foot loops were definitely required! Some helms did make the other side work, enjoying the flatter water and less traffic - and by traffic, I mean rogue windsurfers whose concept of Port-Starboard is akin to that of a Labrador.

All in all, an amazing first day on the water!

British sailor, Jamie Hilton takes the lead on the first day of the ACO 12th Musto Skiff World Championships 2023 in Torbole, with Australian, Matthias Houvenagel in second, and another Brit, Danny Boatman in third. -- Report by Paul Dijkstra (NED) and George Cousins (GBR)

ALOHA!! 52nd Transpac concludes, a new cycle begins
With a resounding ALOHA the final awards ceremony of the 52nd edition of the Transpac concluded last night at Kaneohe Yacht Club on the windward side of Oahu. There are a total of 75 perpetual trophies in the Transpacific YC collection, many of which were awarded on Tuesday and Thursday ceremonies, with the balance awarded tonight.

These included the podium finishers of Boatswains Locker Division 7 and smithREgroup Division 8 who were recognized among the 15 entries in these groups that started the race in San Pedro on Tuesday June 27th. Eleven of these entries made it to the finish line at Diamond Head, while four retired from the race and returned safely to California.

Among several specialty trophies awarded in the prize giving at Kaneohe Yacht Club was the Ilio Aukai Trophy that recognizes the crew with the oldest average age on the crew - of those who would admit their birth dates!

With this figure being 56 years for their crew of seven, the team on IMAGINE TOO has won this prize. This just proves that age is no barrier to participation in Transpac.

Another award presented tonight was the Ronald L. Burla Trophy for Media Excellence.

The Burla Trophy is awarded to the entry that provides the most creative and original media content related to their on-board experience while sailing in the Transpac. Photos, videos and/or written stories are all eligible, with one submission made per boat sent after their start and within 24 hours of their finish.

A panel of judges from TPYC and the race's Media Team decided MACONDO was the winner among six video submissions made this year - these can be viewed here

The other important function of the last award ceremony of the 52nd Transpac is passing the paddle, a symbolic ceremony that installs the next TPYC Commodore to serve in this role for the 53rd Transpac held in 2025. Planning for this next race starts now, and it is Bill Guilfoyle who will now lead the TPYC through this next cycle.
