Meltemi abates at the AEGEAN 600
After yesterday's record-breaking speed for the first two finishers of the AEGEAN 600, the strong Meltemi wind conditions that propelled them around the race course has abated to make the final approach into the finish a light-air challenge for most of the rest of the fleet

Despite these light conditions towards the finish, there was still strong competition among several finishers in the Maxi class. "We had everything in this race," said Guido Paolo Gamucci on his Mylius 60 CIPPA LIPPA from Italy upon arriving safely back at Olympic Marine, "everything from no wind to a 45 knot gale. And also its incredible that we have arrived with three or four boats within minutes after a very interesting fight for 600 miles."

There are only 5 entries that have finished in ORC scoring and 9 in the Maxi class, leaving the bulk of the fleet still out on the course making their way west towards the finish at Cape Sounio. The northerly Meltemi wind is 15-20 knots east of Mykonos, but from there west is diminishes in strength quickly so that near the Attican coast it is very light and boats of all sizes are progressing at rates of only 1-2 knots.

The current leaders in IRC scoring are the two Maxis - LEOPARD 100 and I LOVE POLAND - that finished yesterday, whereas in ORC scoring the current leader is Perikles Livas & Vaggelis Nikolopoulos's Carkeek 47 OPTIMUM S SAMOS STEAMSHIP who is 3 hours ahead in corrected time of runner-up Alexandros Raftopoulos' Swan 112 ERATOSTHENES.

No team from the ORC 2-3 class nor the Multihulls has yet to finish, although Andreas Hofmaier's Corsair Cruze 970 trimaran SAYG 1 from Austria has dismasted and is being towed to port in Kos.

IRC Four in the Rolex Fastnet Race
Sigma 38 With Alacrity. Photo by Paul Wyeth, www.pwpictures.com. Click on image to enlarge.

IRC Four IRC Four may not be the fastest class in the Rolex Fastnet Race, but while teams may be short on pace, there is no shortage of passion and commitment. The 695-mile race is a thorough test for sailors in the smallest boats in the race. A labour of love, and in many respects the toughest challenge of the Rolex Fastnet Race. IRC Four will start the 50th edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race just after blast-off for the Multihulls and IMOCAs, which are likely to complete the race in less than 48 hours. The battle-worn crews in IRC Four are unlikely to make Cherbourg after four days and nights, or more.

Since its conception in 2011, IRC Four has always been won by a French boat, with the majority of the teams hailing from France. However for this edition, the entry list for IRC Four has only seven bateaux français. The cosmopolitan fleet looking to break France's winning streak contains 16 entries from Great Britain and teams from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Poland.

A fascinating collection of boats can be considered as favourites to be the first to finish in IRC Four and then count the minutes for IRC time correction glory. Victory in IRC Four is wide open with a huge variety of boats ranging from pocket-rocket flyers to heavy displacement timeless classics. -- Louay Habib / RORC

Cup Spy - July 11: More light airs in Barcelona - as the temperature rises
What happened in the Cup - July 11, 2023:

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing hoped sailed their AC40-OD against their LEQ12, but the breeze did not oblige. Both boats had their one design wingfoils fitted, but with One Design and Development sails fitted. Former World Match racing skipper and SailGP skipper, Phil Robertson was aboard the AC40-One Design.

- Luna Rossa - no report or images as to whether they ventured out off Barcelona or Cagliari where their LEQ12 is believed to have remained.

- American Magic - no report or images as to whether they ventured out off Barcelona.

- Emirates Team New Zealand is in Barcelona and is believed to be assembling their AC75 with a target sailing date of mid-July.

- INEOS Britannia will not be sailing until August 1, and are transiting to Barcelona from their pre-Cup base in Mallorca.

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge), save for the announcement of their sailing team, last week.

Fast forward 12 months and we are just short of the start date for the 2024 Challenger Selection Series, and Tuesday's conditions look awfully similar to those of mid-April 2007, when the wind, was a no-show for the first four days of racing in the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup.

Vortec RAPIDE Range Launched
Vortec RAPIDE Vortec Marine Ltd, a leading independent yacht refit, maintenance and brokerage business based in Portsmouth UK, is excited to announce the launch of the new RAPIDE range of yachts, starting with the Rapide 41. The new design package also includes the Rapide 55, 70 and 100 models, all designed by Mark Mills Performance Yacht Design.

Commenting on the launch of the new yacht designs, Innes McGowan at Vortec Marine Ltd said: “It has been an absolute pleasure working with Mark Mills on the Rapide range and we are all thrilled to see the plans come to fruition with this month’s new launch. We’re all looking forward to getting the new Rapide 41 out on the water this summer, before turning to the larger designs in quick succession.”

Mark Mills added: “The provenance of the design ensures that whilst the yacht looks graceful, it will perform competitively on the racetrack. However, with simple adjustments to the specification the Rapide 41 can quickly transform into a stable cruiser - giving prospective owners the choice to cruise slow or fast!”

The new Rapide range incorporates all of the latest construction techniques and materials to ensure the highest build quality. The build specification allows owners to personalise the yacht to their own individual requirements, meaning every yacht will be built in a bespoke manner.

The first Rapide 41 will launch in the Mediterranean in July and will be available for viewing and test sailing.

Division 1, 2 and 3 winners celebrated at Transpac
The winners of Divisions 1, 2 and 3 were celebrated today at Waikiki Yacht Club. Even though sometimes separated in elapsed time by wide margins, the competition in corrected time was at times very close.

This was particularly true in SD Boatworks Division 2 where Ivan Batanov and Lawrence Andrews' Reichel/Pugh 51 ZERO GRAVITY defeated John Raymont's Ker 52 FAST EXIT II for the title win by a mere 20 minutes and 3 seconds in corrected time after over 9 days of sailing. In third was John Brynjolfsson's TP 52 SAGA.

Among the seven entries in Cal Maritime Division 1 it was Doug Baker's Dencho/Kernan 68 PELIGROSO that took the title by a margin of 3 hours 35 minutes over runner-up Tom Holtus' Botin 56 BADPAK.

among the nine ULDB Sled entries in Whittier Trust Division 3 Roy Disney's team on his Andrews 68 PYEWACKET won the title by a similar margin over runner-up David Clark's Santa Cruz 70 GRAND ILLUSION.

PYEWACKET had the best corrected time score among these three divisions at 20th in fleet overall.

Meanwhile there are still three teams out in the Pacific approaching the finish: Doug Pasnik's Whittier Trust Division 3 entry TRADER, a Santa Cruz 70 about 330 miles out; Larry Goshorn's Catalina 445 IMAGINE TOO in smithREgroup Division 8 about 380 miles out; and the event's only Double Handed entry, Russ Johnson's Jeanneau 52 BLUE MOON, a Hawaii-based entry in PASHA HAWAII Division 6 that is about 570 miles out.

Iain Murray AM The 18-footer legend continues - a winner who keeps on winning

When Iain Murray graduated from the Cherub and 12ft skiff classes to join the 18 footer ranks as a 17-year-old in the 1976-77 season, with the sponsorship support of local TV station Channel 7 for his self-designed and built Color 7 skiff, nobody could have predicted the enormous influence he would have on the class, and the world of sailing, over the next 47 years - and still going strong.

Iain's pathway to the 18s in the 1970s, as an Inter-dominion 12ft skiff champion, was standard for that time and coincided with the plans of keen sailor and General Manager of ATN Channel 7, Mr Ted Thomas, for his station to become involved in sailing.

The discerning Mr. Thomas saw Iain's potential and the pair formed a sailing 'partnership' which amassed an incredible 13 JJ Giltinan World 18-footer Championship victories as well as an Open World Championship, 11 Australian championships and numerous other major championships in the class for Iain and the Seven Network.

Over the past two seasons, Iain has added two more JJ Giltinan titles to his record, as Team Manager for the Winning family's Andoo company 18ft skiff team.

Iain had already achieved success with victories in both the 1973 Australian Cherub Championship and 1975-76 Interdominion 12ft skiff Championship, in boats he designed and built, so it was no surprise when his first 18ft skiff was also self-designed and built for the 1976-77 season.

RPAYC to celebrate 20th anniversary of Admiral's Cup victory

Admiral's Cup Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) is to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Australian team winning the 2003 Admiral's Cup in the UK and has registered interest in defending the Cup following the recent announcement that the prestigious biannual event will return to the international yachting calendar in 2025.

The win by Bob Oatley's Reichel/Pugh 60, Wild Oats and Colin O'Neil's Rodman 42, Aftershock, will be celebrated at RPAYC on Saturday 22 July with many of the two crews attending. It will be held directly after the opening day of the Mick Hole Regatta, a two-day event held in memory of Hole, who was a grinder on the victorious Wild Oats crew in 2003.

In 2003, the Australians trailed the highly fancied Spanish team by one point going into the ninth and final race of the Admiral's Cup. Worth quadruple points, Aftershock finished third in Wolf Rock Race, the team's chances seeming to have slipped away, meaning, Oatley and crew to pull out something special to beat the Spanish Telefonica Movistar team - and they did.

At 3am on 21 July, 2003 in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, RPAYC Australia was declared the winner by seven points to the Spaniards. Back in Australia, followers awoke to the unbelievable news of the team's victory.

Australia won the Cup at its second attempt in 1967 and won again in 1979, when 15 yachtsmen and six others lost their lives.

Australia came close to winning in 1993, losing by a heartbreaking quarter of a point to Germany in the final race, the Fastnet. Australia won again in 2003, the last time the Cup was sailed and minus the Fastnet Race. -- Di Pearson/RPAYC
