Course record smashed at the Aegean 600
Crossing the finish line at 11:05:25 this morning local time, Chris Sherlock's Farr 100 LEOPARD 100 from Monaco established a new monohull course record for the 605-mile AEGEAN 600 race of 45H 05M 25S, smashing the previous mark of 63H 02M 20S set last year by Phillipp Kadelbach's Elliot 52 RAFALE. This offshore classic race is organized by the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) and co-organized by the Region of Attica, Olympic Marine and supported by the Deputy Ministry of Sports.

"We saw winds up to 35 knots and huge 3-4 meter seas in the channels between Karpathos and Rhodes, and again at the [northeast] corner of Rhodes. Even going through Santorini was not easy for us on a 100-footer since it was at night and we'd never been there before. The whole race course was challenging, but we're really pleased we came. This is a fantastic race and expect it to grow in popularity."

The toughness but satisfaction in completing the course was also expressed by the team on Grzegorz Baranowski's Volvo 70 I LOVE POLAND who also crossed the finish faster than the previous record with an elapsed time of 50H 27M 45S.

Navigator Konrad Lipski said "We were leading in IRC scoring the Maxi Class for the entire race, except in the last leg to the finish when the wind went light for us and LEOPARD took the lead [in corrected time]. Other than this we very much loved this race, it was a real test of skills for our team and very different than the other 600-milers. "

The remainder of the fleet is spread from Mykonos to Rhodes on the east side of the course, with the ever-present Meltemi winds propelling them to their own fast finishes.

Rolex Fastnet Race: IRC3 Preview
George Radley’s Ron Holland-designed IOR 40 Imp last took part in 1987. Click on image to enlarge.

IRC3 Nearly half of the impressive fleet of nearly 90 boats in IRC Three come from the drawing board of three tried and tested designs: Sun Fast 3200, JPK 1010 and J/109. Also in the mix are some of the latest production yachts such as the J/99, as well as historic boats and sailors from years gone by. While the majority of the boats in IRC Three are about 10 metres in length, the sheer size of the armada means that the total waterline length is greater than the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

The most popular design in IRC Three is the Sun Fast 3200, with 19 racing from France, Great Britain and the Netherlands. However, with three different generations of the original 2008 design, as well as options on sail choice, the IRC Rating Rule corrects the finish time of each boat.

Cora (GBR) raced by Tim Goodhew & Kelvin Matthews leads IRC Three for the RORC Season's Points Championship having scored impressively; winning class in the De Guingand Bowl and Morgan Cup, and class runner-up for the Myth of Malham. Cora has been IRC Class runner-up on a number of occasions and won IRC Four in 2021. Cora's ambitions for 2023 will be achieved by a winning performance in the Rolex Fastnet Race, but Cora has stiff opposition from France, just in the Sun Fast 3200 fleet.

With almost identical IRC Rating to the Sun Fast 3200, the 18 JPK 1010s in IRC Three will produce a super-pod of light displacement production cruisers in IRC Three.

The JPK 1010 has raced in IRC Four in previous Rolex Fastnet Races, winning class in the last four editions. In 2013 the Loison's JPK 1010 Night and Day was the overall winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race. -- Louay Habib/RORC

Finn National Championships The Ronstan British Finn National Championships took place over the 6-8 July, ably hosted by Christchurch Sailing Club, with racing out in Christchurch Bay. The championships attracted over 50 entries, from afar afield as Australia, South Africa, Germany, France and even Scotland!

those clearly enjoying the conditions included the event organiser Simon Percival, who threw off the shackles of organisation to score his best result with a fourth, cementing a 7th overall in his elderly and well-travelled Finn - proof you don't need a new boat to be competitive in the Finn Class. Similarly, International Class Executive Director Robert Deaves finally found time to get back in his classic boat for the first time in 4 years and was delighted to finish in 11th spot. Albacore sailor Phil Smith enjoyed his first races in a Finn, sailing the Richard Blowman class loan boat, Finn-spiration, and promises to be back for more.

Sadly, for ex Laser World Champion Lawrence Crispin, his sixth place dropped him to 4th in the final standings, as John Greenwood's under pressure win leapfrogged him up to second, just 2 points astern of Cameron's 11 point winning score.

An after party followed on Saturday evening, featuring a live band and some impressive dance moves from the remaining Finn sailors that stayed the course, rounding off a fantastic three days of fun packed racing.

Final top ten
1. Cameron Tweedle, GBR, 11 points
2. John Greenwood, GBR, 13
3. Nick Craig, GBR, 14
4. Lawrence Crispin, GBR, 17
5. Allen Burrell, GBR, 20
6. James Downer, GBR, 25
7. Simon Percival, GBR, 44
8. Julian Smith, GBR, 47

12 Metre World Championship: Ready to Roll
Newport, Rhode Island, USA: The 2023 12mR World Championship, sanctioned by the International Twelve Metre Association and hosted by the 12 Metre Yacht Club Newport Station in partnership with Organizing Authority Ida Lewis Yacht Club, starts Sunday, July 30 and will continue with five days of racing (Monday through Friday August 1-5). The America's Cup, one of the most famous competitions between countries, was held here in Newport 12 times from 1930 to 1983, and for nine of those times, from 1958 to 1983, the sailboat used to determine the winners was the 12 Metre, a single-masted sloop of approximately 68 feet (21 metres) in length.

Ten historic 12 Metres will compete in the World Championship, which was last held in the U.S. (in Newport) in 2019. They include four yachts that have successfully defended the America's Cup: Columbia (US-16) - 1958, Weatherly (US-17) -1962, Courageous (US-26) - 1974/1977 and Freedom (US-30) - 1980.

On the 2023 roster, all but Weatherly and Nefertiti (US-19) competed at the 2019 12 Metre Worlds, which saw Challenge XII (KA-10) and Columbia each winning their respective divisions - Modern and Traditional - with returning helmsmen Jack LeFort (Winter Park, Fla./Jamestown, R.I.) and Kevin Hegarty/Anthony Chiurco (Newport, R.I./Princeton, N.J.), respectively.

In Modern Division, returning 12 Metres Courageous, Defender (US-33), Freedom and Enterprise (US-27) all will be sailed by new groups. America's Cup Hall of Fame member Dawn Riley (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) will skipper Courageous with a young and diverse crew from Oakcliff Sailing aboard. Andrew Rose (Newport Beach, Calif.) will take the helm of Defender, while Japan's Takashi Okura will lead his team aboard Freedom, and Peter Askew (Key Largo, Fla.) will skipper Enterprise.

Spectator and sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information, contact Peggy Hersam, 12 Metre Yacht Club Executive Director, , +1 (203) 807-1066.

Cup Spy - July 10: Light airs provide a useful test for American Magic in Barcelona
What happened in the Cup - July 10, 2023:

- American Magic sailed their AC40-OD against the LEQ12

- Luna Rossa are reported to have been on the water every day in Barcelona, sailing alone in their AC40-OD - but not monitored by the AC37 Joint Recon Team.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing have no sailing reports for the last five days.

- Emirates Team New Zealand has arrived in Barcelona and is believed to be assembling their AC75 with a target sailing date of mid-July.

- INEOS Britannia will not be sailing until August 1, and are transiting to Barcelona from their pre-Cup base in Mallorca.

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge), save for the announcement of their sailing team.

The New York Yacht Club challenger American Magic opted to sail both their 40fters against each other, but the session came to a premature end due to a lack of interest by the breeze.

Luna Rossa continued sailing their AC40 One Design, sailing alone, as they have done most days of this week.

The other four teams either did not sail or do not have boats - either AC40-ODs, LEQ12s or AC75s - in sailing condition, in Barcelona.

Like their last session, the American Magic team picked a day that was light on wind.

Sailing Roster Announced for French America's Cup Challenger
Orient Express Racing Team - the French Challenger for the 37th America's Cup - reached another significant milestone en route to next year's showdown in Barcelona with the unveiling of the sailing squad. The announcement precedes the imminent arrival of the team's AC40 foiling monohull at the Spanish venue, a vital component in their training trajectory ahead of the delivery of the AC75 America's Cup race boat next year.

Quentin Delapierre and Kevin Peponnet will be the helmsmen for both the AC40 Orient Express and AC75, with François Morvan, Matthieu Vandame and Jason Saunders the trimmers. Between them the quintet bring vast experience at an Olympic and international level, with their skills forged more recently in the intense heat of the SailGP racing circuit.

At the same time, the squad of 'cyclors' - the literal powerhouse who provide the energy needed to operate the AC75's controls - were named as Germain Chardin, Maxime Guyon, Olivier Herlédant, Tim Lapauw, Antoine Nougarede, and brothers Rémi and Thibaut Verhoeven. The group comes from backgrounds in sailing, rowing, cycling and CrossFit, all also with international and Olympic credentials.

A reduction in Government funding will threaten the future of Britain's canals.

That's the message from the Canal & River Trust which says that a reduction in grant funding of more than 40% or £300 million in real terms will lead to the decline of the inland waterways and to the eventual closure of some parts of the network.

The Trust says the reduced funding from 2027 will almost halve the value of public funding for canals in real terms compared with recent years, at the same time as the costs of maintaining historic canals are increasing.

The Trust says independently verified research has found the canals support 80,000 jobs, contribute £1.5 billion annually to the economy and deliver £4.6 billion of social welfare value to people and communities.

Plans are being put in place to grow income from donations, investments and other funding streams and increasing volunteer numbers to help with work.

Boating Business (BB) magazine has been keeping the UK leisure marine industry up to date with the latest and best business information for over 40 years.

Since the new millennium, social media and other online outlets have driven a big change in the way businesses allocate their marketing spend. This trend has only accelerated over the last five years, especially with the pandemic. There has also been a consolidation in the number of B2B trade businesses in the leisure marine sector. The bottom line is that BB's clients are choosing to spend much less on advertising, whether magazine based or on BB.com.boating

We are faced with a stark choice and have chosen to shutter BB from 31 July 2023, while it is still ahead and a well-respected contributor to the UK leisure marine industry. The July issue of the magazine will celebrate the heritage of BB and we hope that the industry will join us in a tribute to this much-loved title.

As for Mercator Media, having just concluded what is probably our most successful Seawork yet, we are busy planning the 25th edition in 2024. Developing our Commercial Marine Network with our stakeholders is a key priority for the business with many pan-European opportunities. Our Ports, Shipping and Fishing magazines and conferences are long established and growing with new international opportunities, especially addressing the environment and decarbonisation. Next year we will also produce the 14th Icelandic Fisheries exhibition in Reykjavik.

We trust that Boating Business will be remembered with fondness for the contribution it has made over the years.

Not many nautical brands can boast of a career as long and successful as that of Cantiere del Pardo, which, after writing 50 years of yachting history, is still an international point of reference and a business model for future generations.

Established in 1973 from the vision and passion of Giuseppe Giuliani Ricci, and today firmly steered by the CEO Fabio Planamente and by the President Gigi Servidati, Cantiere del Pardo is the perfect example of a successful Italian company which, thanks to its deep and solid roots, has looked to the future and risen to new challenges with confidence, always combining innovation and tradition.

With three days full of events, the celebrations of Cantiere del Pardo in Portopiccolo, Trieste marked 50 years of activity and successes for this shipyard, which in 2023 still has same appeal it had at its debut.
