Fast first half for the AEGEAN 600 fleet
Lavrion, Greece: With the help of a solid Meltemi wind throughout the race area, and reaching and running angles in the first few legs of the course, the fleet of yesterday’s 44 starters has had a fast start to the first half of the AEGEAN 600. This offshore classic race is organized by the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) and co-organized by the Region of Attica, Olympic Marine and supported by the Deputy Ministry of Sports.

Northwest winds of 15-20 knots with higher gusts at the southern end of the course has both propelled the monohulls and multihulls entered in the event to their top-end speeds - but also challenged their seamanship. While the lead monohulls have vaulted ahead of the pack at record pace, others have had to retire early with a variety of sail, spar and boat issues.

Nonetheless, there are early leaders in each class that are fighting to stay ahead in the standings. In the Maxis Chris Sherlock’s Farr 100 LEOPARD 100 from Monaco is leading the pack now on the second half of the race course for the elapsed time lead, and has been closely followed throughout the race by Grzegorz Baranowski’s Volvo 70 I LOVE POLAND. In IRC and Maxi class scoring it is the Poles who have the top spot in corrected time.

In the ORC division it is Pericles Livas and Vaggelis Nikolopoulos’ Carkeek 47 OPTIMUM S-SAMOS STEAMSHIP from Greece that are at the top of the leaderboard. In Divisions 2 & 3 Vassilis Priftis’ Hanse 508 PHAEDRA also from Greece is in the lead over Dr. Sascha Schroeder’s Neo 430 NEOMIND from Germany. In the X-Yachts division Artur Skrzyszowski’s Polish team racing on the XP 44 SELMA RACING are in the lead, and in the MOCRA division of multihulls Pietro Farrielo’s Outremer 4x LYNX is at the top of the standings.

Provisional Barn Door and Kalakaua Trophy Winners Announced at Transpac
Sunday July 9: With the finish of 19 out of 52 boats in the fleet this afternoon and no potential rivals on the eastern horizon, the fastest monohulls in elapsed and corrected time have been provisionally determined in the 2023 Transpac.

With an elapsed time of 7 days 13 hours 16 minutes and 38 seconds, the provisional winner of the Barn Door Trophy is Sebastian Moshayedi’s Bakewell-White 100 RIO100 in Cal Maritime Division 1. The Barn Door is Transpac’s perpetual award that honors the boat with the fastest elapsed time in the race. First presented in 1947, this iconic 4-foot long slab of carved Hawaiian Koa wood has been awarded to many famous ocean racing yachts that are legends in the sport: examples include CHUBASCO, MORNING STAR, TICONDEROGA, RAGTIME, WINDWARD PASSAGE, MERLIN and many more.

This will be the third time RIO100 has won the Barn Door, with the first two being in 2015 and 2017. Being also the fastest monohull with manual-powered systems on board, RIO100 will qualify to win the Merlin Trophy as well.

Having led for most of this race in Cabrillo Boat Shop Division 5, Dave Moore’s Santa Cruz 52 WESTERLY 52 has also been announced today as the provisional overall winner of the race in corrected time. The King Kalakaua Trophy honors the team that has sailed the best relative to their rating against all other boats on the course, regardless of their starting date. This historic trophy is named for the late 19th century Hawaiian monarch King David Kalakaua, who is credited for having conceived of a yacht race between the mainland and Hawaii to encourage cooperation and trade…In 1906 this race was run for the first time and is now known as the Transpac. -- Dobbs Davis

GORI Propeller: What do all boats in The Ocean Race have in common?
GORI Propeller Question: What do all boats competing in The Ocean Race have in common?

Answer: All IMOCA’s and VO65’s competing in The Ocean Race were equipped with GORI Propeller Race Propeller, and we look more at why we were chosen.

For less drag in the water (and in the air when foiling) the GORI Race Propeller is chosen by winning race campaigns as everything about it’s design is geared towards speed. The shape of the propeller blades, how the ingenious folding mechanism reduces drag further when not in use and how it can provide the required power under engine is second to none. This is why the 2-blade race propeller which was designed for the mid 1990’s Whitbread Round the World Races is still leading the way today.

The Ocean Race boats are built for speed. Design teams look at the small incremental advances they can make that when combined bring formidable results. Whether that be breaking records, looking for a race win, or simply finding that smooth ride, it’s time import to look above and below the waterline.

Congratulations to 11th Hour Racing and WindWhisper Racing Team on overall victory in The Ocean Race 2022-2023 and your dominance in the in-port series to top the leaderboards.

Whilst 11th Hour Racing may have been the only IMOCA competing that was designed specifically to be fully crewed, the other four boats were designed for solo first, crewed second all are built and designed for less drag and maximum efficiency.

The BSI Group consists of BSI, OYS, Jefa Steering, Hundested Propeller, GORI Propeller and Ocean Marine Systems (OMS), who manufacture rigging, hatches, portlights, blocks, steering systems, propulsions systems, controllable pitch propellers, folding propellers, thrusters, hydraulic cylinders and through-hull instrument deployment hoist.

Lann Ael 3 inaugural IRC Two-Handed European Champion
A second decisive race win in the inaugural IRC Two-Handed European Championship cemented Didier Gaudoux and Gildas Morvan’s Lann Ael 3 as overall victor. As in the first race of the event, 350 miles from La Trinite to Cowes, they were in the right place at the right time for the complex weather and navigational transitions in the 150-mile Cowes Dinard St Malo race.

This event started in fine conditions ahead of a complex area of low pressure with active fronts, plus associated wind shifts that moved across the leaders mid race. From then onwards, much of the course was in lighter headwinds and at times boat speed, even for the leaders, was little more than one knot.

Before that they enjoyed a brisk reach under Code Zero across the English Channel to the Casquets in an easterly airstream. This favoured the newly launched one off Sam Manuard/ Bernard Nivlet designed Lann Ael 3, just as similar conditions, though with stronger breezes, had in the opening race.

Both Lann Ael 3 and Red Ruby are entered in the Rolex Fastnet Race, which this year will see the biggest ever double-handed fleet, with more than 100 boats. -- Rupert Holmes/RORC

Optimised for peak efficiency - SWS Yachts
SWS Yachts Southern Wind’s new 100X is both a return to their roots and a step forward into the future with a strong focus on efficiency… in every sense of the word

For the past seven years, Southern Wind Shipyard has been developing, refining and perfecting its “Smart Custom” design and build process, which combines the main advantages of semicustom and full custom yacht production. Now they’ve enlarged and complemented their offering with a project of identical quality and similar performance potential, with a different range of benefits. Enter the Southern Wind 100X.

In one sense, for the shipyard the 100X represents a return to its roots. Southern Wind forged its reputation 15 years ago with the launch of its first 100-footer, Farewell and the 30-metre segment has been the mainstay of its production ever since. With 23 yachts in that size bracket delivered since 2006, plus a further four just outside it, Southern Wind has built up a lot of knowledge and experience. Just like the iconic original SW100, of which 13 were delivered, the new SW100X will be a semi-custom model built with tighter parameters than the rest of the current Southern Wind fleet.

Overall Titles Awarded at Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta
The bulk of the silverware stayed in Dublin after the curtain came down on an epic four days of sailing at Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta on Sunday evening.

Ireland’s largest sailing event came to a breezy close this afternoon after an exciting four days of racing in Dublin Bay with 400 boats and almost 2,000 sailors competing.

Another strong southerly breeze light saw organisers complete nearly all 250 scheduled races, with many class titles hanging on the outcome of today's final race.

Afloat's pre-regatta predictions for the IRC classes came good in the breezy conditions, with the Offshore prize going to Checkmate XX, Rockabill VI taking IRC Zero, Final Call outwitting the J109s to take IRC One and vintage Half and Quarter Tonners taking IRC Two and Three respectively.

Dublin Yacht Club's shared the bulk of the overall prizes awarded this afternoon at the official prize giving at the National Yacht Club, winning 26 of the 34 classes but not the coveted 'Boat of the Week' Trophy.

The Master Of Marstrand Returns
Marstrand, Sweden: Veteran Swedish match racer Björn Hansen and his Extend Commerce Sailing Team of Mathias Bredin, Philip Kai Guhle and Nils Bjerkås have clinched their seventh win of GKSS Match Cup Sweden, an official stage of the World Match Racing Tour. Hansen defeated USA’s Chris Poole/ Riptide Racing 2-1 in the Final with Sweden’s Johnie Berntsson (SWE, Berntsson Sailing Team) finishing in third place.

Spectators swarmed to the picturesque island of Marstrand to watch the final four teams battle it out for the coveted Marstrand title.

Paired against Estonian Mati Sepp/ Clean Energy Sailing Team in the first semis, Hansen and crew defeated Sepp with two straight wins to secure their place in the final.

In the second semi-final, Sweden’s Johnie Berntsson took the first win against Poole before Poole and team were able to come back with two straight wins to finish 2-1 and advance to the final to meet Hansen.

In the first-to-two points final, Hansen picked up two penalties in the first race allowing Poole an early lead. But Hansen levelled the field 1-1 in the second race.

Requesting to change boat for the deciding race, the two teams split tacked form the start. On the downwind leg, Hansen was able to roll past Poole and reach the leeward gate ahead, opting for the right hand side of the course as they led upwind.

Edging ahead of Poole, Hansen was able to maintain the lead and cross the line to finish 2-1 and secure the title.

M32 Midtown Cup Event 2
Newport, Rhode Island, USA: Jake Julien and his Rated X team were crowned champions of the M32 Midtown Cup Event 2. They did not need to sail the final race: a rare feat in this fleet. The promising young team gets better at every event. This weekend, they won the first race and maintained their protagonist position wire-to-wire. Even scoring a DNS in the final race, they won with a 17-point margin.

Julien also won the Miami Winter Series overall. The fleet newcomer hasn’t yet raced a M32 World Championship. The big dance is around the corner, and Rated X is one to watch.

The closure of this event marks the halfway point of the season. Next in Newport is the North American Championship August 25-27, Pre-Worlds Sept 25-26, and the World Championship Sept 28-Oct 1.

New York Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne
On Thursday 6 July, the organisers of the famous non-stop, non-assisted, single-handed round the world race revealed the Notice of Race for their transatlantic, the New York Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne. This competition, which will start off New York on 29 May 2024, will be decisive for the next Vendee Globe in several respects.

This 2nd edition of the New York Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne, the first organised by the Vendee Globe organisers, will set off from the United States next May. The transatlantic race is already shaping up to be a major event, attracting a huge amount of sporting interest: around forty skippers are expected to line up, compared with 14 in 2016

This Atlantic crossing will be the last qualifying race for the 2024 Vendee Globe. To qualify, skippers must take part in two qualifying races: one in 2022 or 2023 and one in 2024. They must finish one of them in a time that cannot exceed the winner's time plus 50%. That's why taking part in this race is a real challenge for future Vendee Globe competitors.

he New York Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne is also the last race in which the skippers clock up miles for their selection in the Vendee Globe, if more than 40 of them qualify. To underline its importance, the organisers have given it a special feature: for every mile sailed, the sailors will clock up 1.5 miles. So this transatlantic race counts for more than any other selection race!
