Corrected time sailing in Transpac
Most trophies awarded in Transpac are based on not on an entry's elapsed time but their score in corrected time, both within their division and overall in the fleet. How is this determined?

Since the entries in this race are of varied sizes and styles of design, a system is needed to equalize their performance under handicap. Transpac uses a system called the Offshore Racing Rule (ORR), which relies on detailed measurements of the boat, its keel and rudder(s), the spar, the sails and even the crew weight to predict the speed potential of the boat at all wind angles and wind speeds. The calculated speed potential becomes the basis for rating of the boat.

This is determined using aero- and hydrodynamic models within a VPP (Velocity Prediction Program) developed by ORR for wind speeds between 6 - 24 knots and all wind angles for which the boat's performance can be predicted.

Race managers at Transpacific Yacht Club have developed a matrix of values for this range of wind speed and angle that represents a historic average of conditions in a typical Transpac race. Each entry's Transpac rating is thus calculated using this model and expressed in terms of a Time-on-Time (ToT) coefficient. The boat's rating in ToT multiplied by its elapsed time is the corrected time for that boat.

Monnin on form in Marstrand
Switzerland's Eric Monnin and his Capvis Swiss Match Racing Team finished a blustery opening day of the 2023 GKSS Match Cup Sweden undefeated with 4 wins from 4 races in the qualifying round-robin stage. The Swedish event is a championship stage of the 2023 World Match Racing Tour, returning to the Tour for the first time since 2019 after the pandemic.

After several weeks of summer sunshine on Sweden's west coast, conditions for the opening day of the highly anticipated GKSS Match Cup Sweden graced the island with sporadic rains and a fickle 8-15 knot southerly breeze on the iconic Marstrand racecourse.

Finishing the day a point behind Monnin with 3 wins out of 5 races are two of the Swedish teams competing this week, five-time winner of the Marstrand event Björn Hansen (Extend Commerce Sailing Team), and 22yr old Oscar Engstrom (Team Liros) who was recently appointed to join the Swedish Challenge for the 2024 Youth America's Cup.

The ten teams from seven countries including reigning Match Racing World Champion Nick Egnot-Johnson/Knots Racing from New Zealand will aim to complete the qualifying round robin stage tomorrow before advancing to the Quarter-finals and Semi-Finals, with Finals day on Saturday.

Entry level offshore racer - Sea Ventures
Sea Ventures Designed for the next generation of ocean racing sailors, the Jeanneau Sun Fast 30 one design has a huge amount of potential

The growth of the shorthanded racing scene continues and while grand prix custom carbon creations at the top end of the sport seem to be emerging from yards as if spilling off a production line, one of the latest projects to go public is at the other end of the scale, the Jeanneau Sun Fast 30 One Design which is expected to hit the water later this season. This new offshore 30-footer attracted plenty of attention when it was announced at the end of last year. This has been a project that has been bubbling away in the background for a while having been initiated by three international parties, the Union Nationale pour la Course au Large (UNCL), the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and the Storm Trysail Club (STC) who put out a tender for a design to promote offshore sailing by making it more accessible and affordable for the younger generation.

The competition to create this new 30- footer was won by the combined proposal from designers VPLP and builders Multiplast, both of whom have a great deal of expertise in this field; VPLP for their offshore designs and Multiplast for their abilities in the conception and development of offshore racing boats.

Platoon back on top form in Menorca
Winners in Menorca in 2019 and the last time the circuit visited in 2021, Harm Muller Spreer's Platoon crew made the best start to the Menorca 52 Super Series Royal Cup today when they won the first race and took third in the second windward-leeward. They lead by two points ahead of Takashi Okura's Sled and Andy Soriano's Alegre which both aggregated six points apiece.

Racing in a moderate NE'ly wind on the race course to the NW of the entrance to Mahon conditions were challenging not just for the afterguard members who needed to stay in phase to use to the slowly oscillating breeze but also for the helms who had a nasty short, bouncy chop to contend with which made it difficult to sail the boat fast at all times.

The open race course has the advantage of there being no landmass on either flank but the proximity to the high cliffs to leeward adds to the choppy conditions. to work up from a sixth and not try to still win the race, you have to minimise the risks. That is the key for us now."

Menorca 52 Super Series Royal Cup Provisional Standings After Two Races
1. Platoon (GER), Harm Muller-Spreer, 1+3 = 4
2. Sled (USA), Takashi Okura, 5+1 = 6
3. Alegre (GBR), Andy Soriano, 4+2 = 6
4. Provezza (TUR), Ergin Imre, 2+8 = 10
5. Vayu (THA), Whitcraft Family, 3+7 = 10
6. Paprec (FRA), Jean Luc Petithuguenin, 7+5 = 12
7. Quantum Racing Powered By American Magic (USA), Doug Devos, 6+6 = 12

Henry Wetherell wins ultra-competitive OK Dinghy Worlds
Britain's Henry Wetherell has won the 2023 Ovington Boats and Pro-Set Resins OK Dinghy World Championship in Lyme Regis after the final two races on Friday. Niklas Edler, from Sweden, took the silver while Valerian Lebrun, from France, took the bronze.

The final day brought colder and stronger winds with a lot of cloud and some rain. It was a tough end to what has been a tough week in Lyme Regis.

In the first race he fought off a strong challenge from New Zealand's Steve McDowell, with Britain's Andrew Mills in third. Then in the final race, he led from start to finish, holding off Mills, while McDowell sealed his top 10 placing with an excellent third.

The leaderboard changed somewhat on the final day with previous leader, Nick Craig picking up a black flag in the first race and Denmark's Bo Petersen retiring with gear damage.

World Beach Games cancelled after Bali withdraws as host
The 2023 Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) World Beach Games scheduled to be held in Bali next month have been cancelled after the Indonesian city withdrew as hosts, giving the ANOC no time to find an alternative.

"It is with great surprise and extreme disappointment that ANOC has learnt that the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) has withdrawn from its commitment to host the ANOC World Beach Games and the ANOC General Assembly in August 2023," it said on Tuesday.

Bali was set to host the second edition of the World Beach Games and the event included 14 sports like beach soccer, beach volleyball and surfing. Doha hosted the inaugural edition in 2019.

"With the Games scheduled to take place in one month, the decision at such late notice prevents ANOC from being able to find an alternative host.

"So there is no option but to cancel this year's edition of the Games in Bali in August as well as the ANOC General Assembly."

World Sailing Statement on cancellation of 2023 ANOC World Beach Games
David Graham, World Sailing CEO, said: "Everyone at World Sailing is deeply disappointed by the cancellation of the ANOC World Beach Games and we know that disappointment is shared by the Association of National Olympic Committees.

"My thanks go to the World Sailing and Wingfoil Racing officials who had worked hard to make the sailing competition at the ANOC World Beach Games possible.

"In particular, I want to acknowledge that this will be especially disappointing for the athletes who were looking forward to competing, and had spent so much time and energy preparing for what would have been a wonderful event."

European Dream Cup
The Dream Cup regatta features 10 teams from 10 nations, sailing aboard the cutting-edge 69F boats. These state-of-the-art carbon vessels, equipped with full-foiling capabilities, gracefully fly above the water's surface. After a week of training with 69F Sailing professionals, the young sailors will engage in competitive racing during the second week of the event, from July 8th to 14th.

To capture the teams' achievements, 69F's boat tracking system will record the highest speed attained by each team daily. One Ocean Foundation has pledged to collect 10 kilograms of trash from heavily polluted areas for every knot of speed achieved by the fastest team on any given day, mirroring the existing procedure at SailGP events.

As the event concludes, CV Gargnano will pass the baton to the Royal Danish Yacht Club, the next host of this new event, the European Dream Cup.

The Last Word
My own view is that this planet is used as a penal colony, lunatic asylum and dumping ground by a superior civilization, to get rid of the undesirable and unfit. I can't prove it, but you can't disprove it either. -- Christopher Hitchens
