Champagne Sailing soon
On this Independence Day holiday while the rest of us are enjoying grilled meats, libations and fireworks with family and friends, the 52 teams with 455 sailors aboard on the Transpac racecourse are still making steady progress west towards Hawaii. The sun is coming out from behind the clouds during the day, the moon is bright at night and the sailing angles are starting to turn from reaching to running for most of the fleet.

Those who have been at sea for a week since their start last Tuesday in the Boatswains Locker Division 7 and smithREgroup Division 8 are all but one within 1000 miles of the finish at Diamond Head in Oahu, Larry Goshorn's Catalina 445 IMAGINE TOO still being a few miles short of the halfway point in this race of 2225 miles. Some have chosen to be a little north of rhumb line to stay in what appears to be slightly stronger pressure while the leaders of this pack – sistership Dehler 46s WINGS skippered by Ian Edwards and Greg Dorn's FAVONIUS – are less than 10 miles apart and are barreling downwind at 9-10 knots, glued to the rhumbline. By making good speed and minimizing any extra distance sailed, this could turn out to be a winning strategy…already they are in the top 10 in corrected time standings.

Without a strong incentive to dive south for more breeze, the Thursday starters in Ocean Navigator Division 4, Cabrillo Boat Shop Division 5 and PASHA HAWAII Division 6 have opted for different tracks that are, mostly, north of the rhumb line with some (like the J/125s) as much as 150 miles north.

However, the tracker shows there is already the first gybe to port in the fleet: this morning Steve Sellinger's Santa Cruz 52 TRIUMPH gybe to the southwest back towards the middle of the course.

Rolex Fastnet Preview: IRC One
This year's oldest entry pre-dates the first Fastnet Race by 22 years - The 24.88m Moonbeam, a 1903 gaff yawl Fife will compete in IRC One. Photo by Benoit Couturier. Click on image to enlarge.

Moonbeam Watch out IRC One competitors, because this year you have to contend with Tom Kneen and his crew on Sunrise III (GBR). Kneen's team pulled a strategic masterstroke in the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race, the JPK 1180 beating the rest of IRC 2 by more than 120 miles after successfully bridging the transition between two breezes. Sunrise went on to become outright winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race, and with the move to IRC One for 2023 must surely rank as one of the favourites in this class. Recently back racing in Europe after a trip downunder for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Sunrise won IRC One in the recent Morgan Cup, and is looking as strong as ever.

Long-time Sunrise crew member Dave Swete says the Sydney Hobart revealed a chink in their armour, and they have acted accordingly: "We had a bad experience leaving Sydney when we were VMG running and we were 'just another boat'. We weren't that special. So we've put a 6.5 metre spinnaker pole on the boat, which is pretty long for the size of the boat, and we've had some smaller, flatter spinnakers made. We haven't left ourselves much time for testing or figuring out our modes, but my feeling is it's a no-brainer.

"The new Fastnet course is more like a big windward-leeward track," Swete continues, "so we think the spinnaker pole could work out to be pretty useful. We've paid a bit of a price on the rating, but with the right conditions it will be worth it. By my calculations we only need to fly the spinnaker for an hour and a half and it will have paid for itself because it looks to be about 10 per cent quicker." No resting on their laurels for this team.

For Sunrise and their friends on JPK 1180 sistership, Dawn Treader the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race was a tale of contrasting fortunes. One was the outright winner, the other didn't get out of the Solent after losing her rig soon after that impossibly windy start. So it's understandable that Dawn Treader owner Ed Bell's first goal for this year is "to get out of the Solent"! Winner of the Gotland Runt in the Baltic Sea in 2022, Bell's team continue to prove their offshore potential this season, notably with their IRC One victory in the De Guingand Bowl Race.

Howth Seventeens Quasquicentennial Celebration Finds Summer At Fastnet and Cape Clear
Faith fulfilled. Ian Malcolm and Aura at the Fastnet Rock. They were last here twenty years ago. Click on image to enlarge.

Howth 17 In Ireland last week as June drew to a close, the month's exceptionally high temperatures were already becoming a memory, while the winds were raw along the west coast. Yet in far Southwest Cork and particularly out at Cape Clear, summer was still to be found.

The vintage Howth 17s, on tour to celebrate their class's 125th Anniversary under the visionary leadership of Class Captain David O'Shea, found a lacuna of reasonable weather in a week of sailing among Carbury's Hundred Isles in Roaring Water Bay, whose inappropriate title stems from the fact that the Roaring Water River – serene by the time it reaches the sea – flows gently into its sheltered inner reaches.

Even had they wished to, they couldn't have celebrated their 120th back in 2018, as several of the class were still in bits after their storage shed had been flattened by Storm Emma in March. But what with Pandemics and other negative happenings since, it seems to have been intended that this particular week should be used for Cruise-in-Company time, as the 125th Anniversary of their very first race – on May 4th 1898 – had been marked in suitable Quasquicentennial style.

Another gem from WM Nixon in Afloat... with plenty of photos of the resurrected fleet.

Vortec RAPIDE Range Launched
Vortec RAPIDE Vortec Marine Ltd, a leading independent yacht refit, maintenance and brokerage business based in Portsmouth UK, is excited to announce the launch of the new RAPIDE range of yachts, starting with the Rapide 41. The new design package also includes the Rapide 55, 70 and 100 models, all designed by Mark Mills Performance Yacht Design.

Commenting on the launch of the new yacht designs, Innes McGowan at Vortec Marine Ltd said: “It has been an absolute pleasure working with Mark Mills on the Rapide range and we are all thrilled to see the plans come to fruition with this month’s new launch. We’re all looking forward to getting the new Rapide 41 out on the water this summer, before turning to the larger designs in quick succession.”

Mark Mills added: “The provenance of the design ensures that whilst the yacht looks graceful, it will perform competitively on the racetrack. However, with simple adjustments to the specification the Rapide 41 can quickly transform into a stable cruiser - giving prospective owners the choice to cruise slow or fast!”

The new Rapide range incorporates all of the latest construction techniques and materials to ensure the highest build quality. The build specification allows owners to personalise the yacht to their own individual requirements, meaning every yacht will be built in a bespoke manner.

The first Rapide 41 will launch in the Mediterranean in July and will be available for viewing and test sailing.

Cup Spy - July 3: Barcelona verdict: 'More waves than the wind' - Francesco Bruni
What happened in the Cup - July 3, 2023:

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailed their AC75 from Barcelona without incident

- American Magic sailed their LEQ12 for the first time in Barcelona two-boat sailing against their AC40-OD

- Luna Rossa sailed their AC40OD for the first time, with some of the sailing crew only arriving the previous night.

- Emirates Team New Zealand has arrived in Barcelona, with the freighter carrying the AC75 and gear docking on Monday, and offloading directly into the team base.

- INEOS Britannia is not sailing until August 1

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).

Today was always ordained to be a significant day in the 2024 America's Cup cycle - being the first day - well, first practical day, on which the teams were required to sail at Barcelona, the host venue for the upcoming America's Cup.

The Protocol requirement to sail at the Venue took effect from last July 1.

Technically they could have had their first hit-out in Barcelona on Saturday, but the reality of the Cup is that teams rarely train on the weekend. Others like American Magic first tested the waters off Barcelona last week, and the Swiss challenger, Alinghi Red Bull Racing has been sailing at Barcelona, from a temporary base, since August 8, last year.

S.M. La Reina The XXIV Trofeo S.M. La Reina - Regata Homenaje a la Armada - XXXV Copa Almirante Marcial Sánchez-Barcaíztegui was held at the RCN Valencia with the participation of 109 boats in different classes. Francisco Miguel Giménez's boat "Enewtec", from the CN La Isleta (Murcia), was the overall winner, winning all seven races in its class, ORC 4 Occident. The emblematic event of the Real Club Náutico de Valencia was attended by five ORC classes, which completed the seven races scheduled over three days of competition.

The ORC 0 and ORC 1 classes competed together on the Manel Casanova course, sharing space with the ORC 2 and ORC 3 classes. On the other hand, the ORC 4 class competed on the Bravo course. Both courses were located in front of the beaches of El Saler and the wind conditions were favourable, with intensities between 6 and 18 knots and waves that put the crews to the test.

In the different classes, the winners were: "Elena Nova" in ORC 0-1 MSC, "Maverta-Defcom Seguridad" in ORC 2 Mercedes-Benz Valdisa, "L'Immens-LaPlaza Assessors" in ORC 3 Varadero Valencia, "Enewtec" in ORC 4 Occident, "Davincy" in the Open Musto class and "Newkote" in the UPV Promotion.

In addition, the J80 Spanish Cup was held as part of this event, with the participation of twelve boats in the Absolute, Mixed and Youth categories. Nine windward-leeward legs were sailed to determine the winners. The Youth category was deserted due to the lack of participants. In the end, the boat "Asociados" won the J80 Royal Bliss Absolute Spanish Cup, while Team Balearia won in the Mixed category. -- Luis Fernandez

Sailing World on Water
Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days. Pip Hare's newly purchased Imoca has its stability test. In this video, Pip explains the 90 degree test and the final steps in the preparation to get Medallia back on the water for the 2023 race season.

This is the weekly Sailing highlights show, the World on water, June 30, 2023.

On the fourth and final day of the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, the forecast breeze failed to arrive on the race course. As the expected westerly wind did not materialise in the late morning, the Race Committee postponed the start for both the Superyacht and Southern Wind divisions several times, right up until one thirty p m, when the Committee Boat was forced to signal that there would be no further racing.

Bieker 53 Fujin, owned by Greg Slyngstat. Photo Credit Laurens Morel, Salty Colours. Click on image to enlarge.

Bieker 53 Fujin Flush from the wild success of the 5th annual Caribbean Multihull Challenge Race and Rally, the Steering Committee for the CMC formally announces an increase of one-day more for racing and rallying during the 6th annual event to be held on the 1,2,3,4 of February 2024. New records for 2023 are in the books – an 78% increase in entries from 18 in 2022 to 32 in 2023; plus the introduction of a successful CMC Cruising Rally are only two facets of the CMC's 2023 achievement.

For racers, the new four-day format will see a repeat of the three CSA 1 Trifecta distance races on three separate days; plus one extra day for shorter racing along the south coast of Sint Maarten. Other CSA Racing Classes will see more of the same line up of courses from 2023 with more racing added on the fourth day. For Cruising Sailors, the extra day will allow for a day visit to the uninhabited French island of Tintemarre and an overnight in Great Bay, then a Friday sail around SXM to the luxury of French-side Anse Marcel, and for Saturday night, a welcoming stay in St. Barth's; with a sail back to the SMYC in Simpson Bay on Sunday, the 4th.

Registration for the 6th CMC Race and Rally is at YachtScoring.com

Entry fees are posted there and the CMC is offering a 10% discount on registration for vessels that enter early.
