Line Honours and Gold Roman Bowl for TSCHUSS 2 in Round the Island Race

Round the Island Race The Island Sailing Club would like to congratulate Christian Zugel and his crew for their multiple wins - Line Honours, IRC Overall Prize and the coveted Gold Roman Bowl.

The weather conditions could not have been better for the Volvo 70 'Tschuss 2' – a strong breeze throughout the day and from the west enabling a spinnaker run from just before the Needles right the way to Bembridge.

'Tschuss 2' completed the course in 4 hours, 11 minutes and 18 seconds with the Mini Maxi 'Notorious' crossing the line in second place finishing in 4 hours, 19 minutes and 4 seconds.

'Tschuss 2' has been training for the last ten days on the Solent and a practice race around the Isle of Wight but they did it clockwise – like the original America's Cup route in 1851.

The tactician onboard, Neal McDonald said: "I've competed in the race a number of times and can say it was perfect conditions for 'Tschuss 2' today. It's such an iconic race in a wonderful setting."

The Grand Finale in Genova
The last day of racing in this 14th edition of The Ocean Race took place at the Grand Finale in Genova on Saturday afternoon.

Sunny skies, very light and shifty winds and enthusiastic crowds on shore and on the water were the order of the day as this six month, around the world odyssey came to a close.

It was a day of celebration as well as competition with the afternoon and evening set aside for awards night and prizegiving ceremonies.

11th Hour Racing Team skipper Charlie Enright was delighted to be able to deliver a race win after all the effort it had taken to get his IMOCA 'Mãlama' repaired after it was hit by GUYOT environnement - Team Europe soon after the start of Leg 7 in The Hague.

"Our shore crew worked night and day for three days straight to be able to get us back on the water and able to take part in this Grand Finale In-Port Race," he said.

"To be able to compete - and win the race today in Genova - we couldn't ask for a better way to complete our lap of the planet and to show our thanks to everyone who has supported our campaign for the past few years."

The race win ensured 11th Hour Racing Team would take the double victory - a win in the offshore around the world race, as well as the In Port Race Series.

All the performance with a bit more comfort - Judel Vrolijk
WHAT A new semi-custom racer from judel/vrolijk and Oceantec takes the Class40 concept back to its roots… with an extensively optimised IRC rating and a super-lightweight interior

Class40 has moved on from its initial concept. What started as a class offering shorthanded offshore racing for top-tier amateur sailors on moderate budgets has morphed into a very successful class of completely stripped-out racing machines, campaigned with serious money, whose primary function is to provide a stepping stone for professional solo sailors en route to rock star status in Imoca 60s. So where do you go if you want a boat that truly reflects the original spirit of Class40, with the same level of performance as the top boats in that fleet, but also a competitive IRC rating plus the bare minimum of accommodation for weekend cruising with family and friends? Two experienced Class40 racers couldn't find anything quite like that so they asked judel/vrolijk to design it for them.

Built around the engine box and on top of the hull's structures, the total weight of the interior – seat, bunks, table, galley, heads, fairing, paint and everything else – is only 150-200kg. Its impact on performance is minimal

Gray but Great Final Start to Transpac
Saturday off Point Fermin not only did the fastest group of 20 boats arrive for the third and final start of Transpac, so did the westerly sea breeze to get them off quickly on their 2225-mile journey to Hawaii. Contrary to the earlier starts on Tuesday and Thursday of this week with their light air conditions, today's 10-12 knots of wind in the start area had the fleet heeled over and going fast towards their first mark of the course, the West End of Catalina Island 25 miles away.

Some got off a little too fast: a 10-degree left shift made the pin end of the line very attractive, prompting three OCS calls from the race committee for entries in Cal Maritime Division 1: Cal Maritime's Andrews 77 T/S CAL MARITIME, Tom Holtus' Botin 56 BADPAK, and Michael Firman's Infinity 52 ZEUS. Breaking free of the pack early is the largest monohull in the fleet, Manouch Moshayedi's Bakewell White RIO100.

An hour earlier in the Epic Insurance Division of multihulls, three MOD 70s crossed the start in slightly less breeze on their way west, with Jason Carroll's ARGO taking the start for an early lead.

"The forecast is suggesting a progressively slower race with moderate breeze," said Peter King, navigator on Raymond Paul's Botin 65 ARTEMIS, "but the good news is it looks relatively stable. Our challenge will be to stay in the pressure without straying too far north."

Halfway point (for some) in Transpac
After yesterday's third and final start of the 2023 Transpac, the fortunes of the fleet of 57 entries can be ascertained from the PASHA HAWAII YB tracker system and reports coming in to race managers at Transpacific Yacht Club. There are some in this fleet there are starting to get a taste of the champagne sailing conditions that makes this race famous, while others are still days away from having this taste too as they struggle to get off the California coast.

The leaders in the first group of starters continue their match race battle for the lead in Boatswain's Locker Division 7 among two Dehler 46 sisterships. At 0900 PDT this morning Greg Dorn's FAVONIUS is shown to have managed to pass and build a 4-mile lead over Ian Edwards' WINGS from Australia. With 1219 miles to the finish at Diamond Head in Honolulu these two are sailing at about 9 knots and are near the halfway point on the course after 5 days of racing.

They and the rest of Tuesday starters are positioned 50-100 miles south of the rhumb line. In the back half of this group is Cecil and Alyson Rossi's Farr 57 HO'OKOLOHE who are leading PASHA HAWAII Division 5. Steve Rossi is aboard HO'OKOLOHE and reported this morning "We've all been watching the tracker keeping an eye on the fast boats and the pain they've been suffering with their start. Well, we're currently feeling a bit of their pain with light winds in the 4-7 knot range. We're doing our best to race west into the dropping pressure zone where we're hoping we can finally throw our kite up before it gets dark.

Charisma Defends Her 44Cup Marstrand Title
With rollmops unfurling in the big breeze, the decision was made to cancel the final day of racing at the 44Cup Marstrand. Despite this, over the last four days eight races were held and a worthy winner found in Nico Poons' Charisma, defending champion of the 44Cup's Swedish stopover as well as being 2022's 44Cup overall winner.

"There are big waves, 30 knots and the wind is going to increase. There will be a slight lull but the sea state will still be large, so we are going to cancel racing today," announced 44Cup Class Manager Bertrand Favre at this morning's skippers briefing. This had been brought forward to 0830 in the tentative hope of getting in some racing this morning.

The announcement was greeted with relief from the crews. "I absolutely agree," said Team Nika's stand-in tactician American Bill Hardesty, who has match raced on these waters often. "It is crazy out there. You can see even more white caps this morning than you could on Friday. It is not safe to sail today."

Next up will be the 44Cup World Championship, taking place in Cowes, Isle of Wight over 9-13 August.

Record-sized fleet poised to start 2023 AEGEAN 600
Aegean 600 Lavrion, Greece: Under the gaze of the ancient Temple of Poseidon, a record-sized fleet of 45 entries from 15 nations are poised and ready in one week to start in the third annual edition of the AEGEAN 600, organized by the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) and co-organized by the Region of Attica and Olympic Marine. This turnout is the largest yet in the short history of this new classic offshore race - called the "perfect 600-miler" by Seahorse Magazine - with 40% more entries than the fleet in 2022.

In addition to the 41 monohull entries competing under IRC and/or ORC handicaps, there are also 4 multihulls entered that will be scored with the MOCRA system, with 3 monohull teams planning to race the 605-mile course Double-Handed.

One of the largest monohulls in this year's fleet will be the Farr 100 LEOPARD 3, coming fresh off a major refit done at its base in Palma de Mallorca.

Another Maxi entered in the race is George Sakellaris' Maxi 72 PROTEUS from the USA. A regular competitor in one of the most competitive classes in the sport,

Another Maxi entry with proven offshore experience is from Poland. I LOVE POLAND, Konrad Lipski's Volvo 70 that has been a regular competitor in transatlantic and Caribbean racing over the past few seasons.

With the right conditions, every one of these large fast entries stands a good chance of threatening the monohull course record of 63H 02M 20S set last year by Phillipp Kadelbach's Elliot 52 RAFALE. Wind conditions and seamanship skills will determine this outcome.
