They're off! First Transpac fleet starters on their way
Under clear Southern California skies, 6-10 knots of wind, and just a hint of fog out on the western horizon, the first wave of the 2023 Transpac fleet is on their way towards Hawaii. Nine entries in Boatswains Locker Division 7 and six in smithREgroup Division 8 crossed the start line today. One Hawaiian-based entry in the latter class – Russ Johnson's Jeanneau 52.2 BLUE MOON – only arrived last night and received permission to delay their start until the next group sets off on Thursday.

A team who is taking on this race for the first time and on one of the smallest boats in the fleet is Herwig Baumgartner's 1D35 BLACK MARLIN from Los Angeles with an assembled amateur crew of seven on board. This morning before leaving the dock at the Cabrillo Way Marina in San Pedro they "were looking forward to the tradewinds and the legendary downwind sailing Transpac offers."

This first wave of starters can be tracked on the YB system, sponsored by Pasha Hawaii. The positions, speeds and headings of each entry can be found on this system on either the browser of app versions. There is a built-in 4 hour delay for each entry, except when within 200 miles of the finish when the tracker goes live.

Victory for Monnin on Lake Ledro
Veteran Swiss match racer Eric Monnin and his Capvis Swiss Match Racing Team secured victory at the 12th edition of the OM International Ledro Match Race last weekend, Stage 6 of the World Match Racing Tour hosted by the Associazione Vela Lago Di Ledro, Italy. With eleven teams competing from nine countries on Lake Ledro, Monnin and crew defeated local sailor Rocco Attili and his RBYS team 3-0 in the finals, with Israel's Vladimir Lipavsky finishing in 3rd.

One of the most experienced match racers on the World Match Racing Tour, and winner of the 2022 European Match Racing Championship, it was a family win for Monnin with his crew made up of brother Marc Monnin and his wife Ute Monnin-Wagner.

Morgan Pinckney (USA) and Justin Callahan (USA) qualify for 56th Governor's Cup
Photo by Tom Walker Photography. 56th Governor's Cup The twelve-team field for the 56th-annual Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship is now final, with a record eight countries represented. Joining the ten skippers already invited are Morgan Pinckney of Newport Beach, California and Justin Callahan of Miami, Florida, based on their success at the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup that ended Sunday (25 June) in Sheboygan, WI.

The Governor's Cup is presented by Disc Sports & Spine Center and Terry Causey / Call of the Sea foundation. The prestigious invitational event is for sailors who have not reached their 23rd birthday by the last day of the regatta. It is the world's oldest international youth match racing championship.

These two superb young sailors will face tough competition from all over the world. Early favorites would have to include 2021 GovCup champ Jeffrey Petersen from the host Balboa Yacht Club who finished second last year and is the reigning Youth Match Race World Champion. Josh Hyde (NZL) from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will also be a strong contender, as will veteran Cole Tapper (AUS) from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.

The championship is sailed in identical "Governor's Cup 22" sloops provided by the Newport Balboa Sailing & Seamanship Association and Balboa YC. Designed by famed yacht designer and BYC Staff Commodore Alan Andrews, they feature fractional rigs, flat-top mains and masthead spinnakers. -- Susan Kenney

Just one month remains until SailGP, the world's most exciting racing on water, makes its first-ever stop in Los Angeles on July 22 - 23, 2023. Tickets for the inaugural Oracle Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix at the Port of Los Angeles are on sale now.

The Port of Los Angeles provides the ideal host location for the adrenaline-fueled sailing event, providing spectator-friendly racing. Lucky fans will see the action up close and personal, lining the shores and enjoying prime viewing areas within the ticketed zones, with live commentary to complement the on-water action.

SailGP's 10 teams representing countries around the world - including the United States SailGP Team led by sailing legend Jimmy Spithill - will race F50s, 50-foot hydrofoiling catamarans capable of highway speeds exceeding 60 mph, in a fan-focused, two-day spectacle. After a tough Season 3 campaign, the American team is out for redemption.

The unique Outer Harbor racecourse offers exceptional viewing opportunities, with ticket packages available for grandstand seating at Berth 46, along with on-water viewing zones for privately-owned vessels. For more information on all of the ticketing categories head to SailGP.com/LosAngeles.

After a successful season opening event at the Rolex United States Sail Grand Prix in Chicago earlier this month, the City of Angels is SailGP's second stop on a 12-race global championship spanning four continents from June 2023 - July 2024. Alongside LA, the global sailing league also announced its return to New York City later this season as part of an expanded Season 4 schedule.
