Team Malizia saves the best for last with a win in Leg 7 of The Ocean Race
It was a busy day of arrivals on Tuesday in Genova with 7 boats across two classes finishing at the Grand Finale

Team Malizia found a way to grab a last-minute win in leg 7 of The Ocean Race, saving the best for last.

On the waters off the finish port of Genova, skipper Boris Herrmann and his crew boldly grabbed the leg lead in extremely light and variable conditions at 0600 UTC on Tuesday morning, by virtue of heading close to shore and picking up a gentle breeze along the coast.

This allowed them to ease past Team Holcim-PRB, who had led for the majority of the leg from The Hague to Genova, as well as Biotherm, and win their second leg of The Ocean Race.

"I'm very happy and very proud of this team. It's been a privilege to work with all of them," said skipper Boris Herrmann, reflecting on the end of his around the world race. "We have the most sailors who completed the full race and Rosie is the only female to do the whole lap of the planet."

The two other IMOCA teams in the fleet, 11th Hour Racing Team and GUYOT environnement - Team Europe, were forced to retire from racing shortly after the start, following a collision.

And this means the overall leaderboard for the IMOCA fleet in The Ocean Race remains 'provisional' awaiting the Request for Redress that has been filed by 11th Hour Racing Team after being hit just after the start by GUYOT environnement - Team Europe, who acknowledged responsibility for the incident.

The World Sailing International Jury will hear the Redress request on Thursday. With today's results, Charlie Enright's 11th Hour Racing Team is just one point behind Team Holcim-PRB, so any award of redress of one point or more will give the team overall victory in The Ocean Race.

Legends Regatta A fleet of ocean thoroughbred yachts which have previously taken part in past editions of the Whitbread Round The World Race, the Volvo Ocean Race, and The Ocean Race are assembling in Italy ahead of the 50th Anniversary Legends Regatta taking place in the city of Genova from June 24-July 2, 2023.

This unique gathering of some of the world's most iconic ocean racing yachts of the last several decades takes place as part of 'Genova, The Grand Finale' – the concluding stopover of the 2022-23 edition of The Ocean Race.

The Legends fleet assembled in Genova on June 24 and will compete in two days of racing – the 50th Anniversary Legends Regatta on Tuesday, June 27 and the Legends Coastal Race Genova – Portofino – Santa Margherita on Friday, June 30 – and will be at the heart of the event's Legends festivities taking place during The Ocean Race's week-long Genova, The Grand Finale event.

As well as being able to enjoy the beauty and spectacle of the Legends yachts as they race in the Bay of Genova and along the Italian coastline, visitors to the event will be able to take a close up tour of the yachts during the Open Boat programme taking place on June 24/25 and 28/29, as well as July 2.

The seven competing yachts in the 50th Anniversary Legends Regatta all previously raced around the world in a previous edition of The Ocean Race – originally known at its inception in 1973 as the Whitbread Round The World Race, and then the Volvo Ocean Race from 2001 to 2018.

The Legends attendee list includes two race-winning skippers: Paul Cayard (USA) – who won the 1997-98 Whitbread Round the World Race on the Whitbread 60 EF Language – and Ian Walker (GBR) – who became the race's first British winner aboard Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's VO65 Azzam in the 2014-15 edition.

Also in attendance will be husband and wife Lisa and Neal McDonald. Each have led teams in the 2001-02 Whitbread Round the World Race – Lisa as skipper of the all-female British-flagged Amer Sports Too, and Neal as skipper of the Swedish entry Assa Abloy.

Additional attendees include: Sir Chay Blyth (GBR), skipper of Great Britain II in the inaugural Whitbread Round the World Race; Bruno Dubois (CAN/BEL), skipper of the Belgian entry Rucanor Sport in the 1989-90 Whitbread Around the World Race and team director of The Ocean Race 2017-18-winning Dongfeng Team (CHN); Dawn Riley (USA) who skippered the all-female Whitbread 60 Heineken in the 1993-94 Whitbread Round the World Race; Austria's Andreas Hanakamp – skipper of Team Russia's VO70 Kosatka in The Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09; Jean-Michel (Jimmy) Viant, skipper of Japy-Hermes in the 1997-98 Whitbread Round the World Race; and four-time participant Guillermo Altadil (ESP).

Flying the flag for Poland - I love Poland
Poland Two young Polish leaders have scored some inspiring victories in major offshore regattas, beating world class teams with far bigger budgets

Bang for buck, it's hard to think of a big boat project that scores more highly than I Love Poland. The VO70 that was originally constructed for US skipper Ken Read's Puma campaign in the Volvo Ocean Race, Mar Mostro is now enjoying a fulfilling second life as the 70-foot platform for an extremely successful and well-run tour of the offshore racing circuit. And a lot more besides.

Earlier this year, the young Polish crew sailed I Love Poland to line honours and IRC Super Zero class victory in the RORC Transatlantic Race. It's just the latest in a long list of achievements, such as winning line honours in the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the Gotland Runt and the Roschier Baltic Sea Race.

2023 Melges 24 World Championship
Melges 24 World Championships 2023 were officially opened in Hindsgavl Castl on Monday June 26, when the Melges 24 sailors from all over the world were welcomed by Johannes Lundsfryd Jensen, the Major of Middelfart Kommune; Laura Grondin, the Chair of the International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA); Soren Blume Svendsen, the President of the Danish Melges 24 Class and Soren Laugesen, the Event Chair of the Melges 24 Worlds and CEO of GoSail.

Sailors could enjoy the local hospitality and some of Denmark's finest landscape surrounding Hindsgavl Castle looking at the glittering waters of the Little Belt thru the old trees of the castle park.

Three days of registration, measurements, and inspections has come to an end and today, at midday the first warning signal was about to sound for the Melges 24 World Championship 2023 off Middelfart.

The forecast for today was strong, but not as strong as it appeared to be on the racecourse. It has been blowing under sunny skies a steady 22-25 knots from NW here all the morning with occasional big gusts on top of that. First attempt to start the race was called off with a general recall and during that sequence wind started to pick up even more. The Race Committee was waiting wind to drop, but after waiting about fifteen minutes, PRO David Bartol decided to display AP over H sending the fleet ashore. But since the wind didn't drop and stayed as forecast, then at 3.15 pm the Race Committee was forced to call off racing for today here at the Worlds in Middelfart and scheduled the first warning signal for 11 am tomorrow.

Racing at the Melges 24 World Championship 2023 will resume at 11 am, on Wednesday, June 28.

Cape Horn Hall of Fame
A host of famous circumnavigators are in the frame to have their names added to the International Association of Cape Horners (IACH) Cape Horn Hall of Fame honours board at a ceremony slated for September 21 to coincide with the start of the Mini-Transat Race from Les Sables d'Olonne, France, the home of Solo Sailing.

His committee, which includes French veteran sailor Jean-Luc van den Heede (deputy-chairman), American navigator Stan Honey, and fellow circumnavigators Dee Caffari (UK), Dilip Donde (India) and Ash Manton, Chairman of IACH, will review each nomination and select the best 20 names for a vote by members of IACH to determine the final six to be inducted into the 2023 Cape Horn Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony for the 2023 Cape Horn Hall of Fame will take place in Les Sables d'Olonne on Thursday September 21, prior to the start of the Mini-Transat Race on September 24. "The timing is very apt because the Mini-Transat class has long been a spawning ground for ocean racers including Jean-Luc van den Heede, Dame Ellen MacArthur, Loic and Bruno Peyron, Whitbread race winner Lionel Pean, and Simon Curwen, the first to finish in the recent Golden Globe Race", says Sir Robin.

"We are very pleased to have the IACH Cape Horn Hall of Fame as a permanent fixture in Les Sables d'Olonne", says the City Mayor Yannick Moreau, adding: "The Board of Honour pays tribute to these men and women, who have shown such bravery and courage. It has also become a pilgrimage for recipients and their families to visit, building on our reputation and maritime importance as home for the Vendee Globe and Golden Globe solo round the world races."

Ready to rumble in Mahon, Menorca
To many observers it may seem like the 2023 52 SUPER SERIES season has only just started but in fact when the fleet convenes this coming weekend in the historic natural harbour of Mahon in Menorca, this third regatta of the year will take the very evenly matched, highly refined TP52 fleet past the season's midpoint.

Menorca, with its open race area is especially liked by the teams. The littler Balearic island is too small to generate the dependable strong sea-breezes the like of, say, the Bay of Palma. But also there are no significant geographic features to affect the breeze. Ashore the beautiful old city and its waterfront bars and restaurants are popular with discerning summer tourists who enjoy a much quieter, gentler pace of life than other busier, bigger Spanish city destinations. And as hosts the Club Maritimo de Mahon pull out all the stops to deliver a great event every time.

This will be the fifth visit of the 52 SUPER SERIES to Menorca. While Provezza will be bidding to extend to a run of three back-to-back wins, Germany's double world champions Platoon will also actually be looking to extend their record of winning in Mahon to three straight. Müller Spreer's team won last time, in 2021, ahead of Alegre and Quantum Racing and in 2019 they triumphed ahead of Provezza and Quantum Racing. In 2017 Azzurra won and in 2016 Quantum Racing were crowned TP52 world champions.

Racing starts Wednesday 5th July with the official practice races Tuesday. The Menorca 52 SUPER SERIES Royal Cup will feature three days of Live TV bringing all the action from the water Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

52 SUPER SERIES 2023 Provisional Standings after Scarlino
