Rockwool's Lagos GC32 Masterclass
Four days of racing at the GC32 Lagos Cup came to a conclusion today on Portugal's Algarve coast with a run-away victory for the Nicolai Sehested-skippered Team Rockwool Racing. Out of 15 races sailed, the Danish SailGP crew won a phenomenal ten, including an opening day of five races when they were unbeaten. In fact Thursday was the only one of the four days when the wind was blowing 'as advertised' off Lagos – a 13 knot offshore breeze from the prevailing northwest, permitting the sea to remain flat and the GC32s to enjoy full foiling with reaching starts.

Sadly conditions remained elusively light on Friday when, despite the best attempts of PRO Stuart Childerley and his team from Lagos Yacht Club throughout the day, no races could be held.

Team Rockwool Racing's impressive scoreline enabled the Danes to stand-down from today's last race, held in 6-7 knots and yet were still able to win this, the GC32 Racing Tour's sole event of 2023, by eight points ahead of Christian Zuerrer's Black Star Sailing Team. The reigning GC32 World Champions this week had French multihull legend and former two time GC32 Racing Tour winner Franck Cammas helming. -- James Boyd

Spectacular practice race as OK Dinghy World Championship opens in sunny Lyme Regis
The Ovington Boats and Pro-Set Resins 2023 OK Dinghy World Championship was opened Sunday in Lyme Regis, UK, with 143 boats from 13 countries ready to start racing on Monday. On Sunday the practice race was held in spectacular conditions on Lyme Bay with 15-18 knots and wall to wall sunshine. In the evening the opening ceremony was held at the club.

The fleet set out for the practice race in light winds, but after a short wait a strong sea breeze quickly built to provide fantastic sailing conditions. Around 130 boats took part. The early leaders in the two groups were Paul Childs and Andrew Mills, but as normal many dropped out through the race and at the finish former world champions, Greg Wilcox, from New Zealand, took the first gun while Jim Hunt, from Britain, eventually won the second group. Only around 30 boats completed the course.

The conditions were exactly sublime, with long rolling waves, blue skies, high temperatures and a lot of happy sailors. After weeks of very light winds and calm seas, finally the sailors could stretch their legs and let the boats fly on the waves. The forecast for the rest of the week is quite encouraging, with a few lighter days and a few windier days. -- Robert Deaves

The new brain in the background - Navico
Navico B&G's new ultra-fast Triton Edge Sailing Processor delivers more and better data to boost the accuracy and performance of your sailing systems

Another processor, on top of the one I already have inside my MFD? Why would I need that? To understand the benefits available in the new Triton Edge Sailing Processor, a gaze back on the history of B&G is necessary. B&G comes from a heritage of highperformance racing, but a lot of the knowledge gained through more than 50 years on a top competitive level has proven to be useable for cruising as well. It just needs to be adapted and presented differently.

'Our background is well known', says Matt Eeles, product director at Navico Group. 'But most people don't know that the way we developed previous systems, especially the H5000 and its predecessors, is different from how the more cruising oriented brands develops their systems. We always had a central unit that took care of data processing.

IRC National Championship
Cowes, Isle Of Wight: Light to medium conditions was one of the factors resulting in a number of different teams notching up race wins on the second day of the IRC National Championships. Racing today in the Solent was nothing short of spectacular; Race Officer Paul Jackson reported seeing the entire IRC 4 class running abreast towards the leeward mark. Three races were held for all classes. Congratulations to all race winners: MAT 12 Sailplane 3, A35 Arcus, TP52 Gladiator, X-302 Antix, A31 Aztec, and the classic sloop Cetaweyo.

IRC One
Three straight bullets for Tony Langley's TP52 Gladiator puts the star-studded team on top of the class leaderboard after six races. Ian Atkins' GP42 Dark 'N' Stormy finished second in all three races. Gladiator leads the series by two points from Dark 'N' Stormy. The young Dutch team on Ker 46 ROST-Van Uden, skippered by Gerd-jan Poortman is in third, three points ahead of RORC Commodore James Neville's Carkeek 45 Ino Noir.

IRC Two
Rob Bottomley's MAT 12 Sailplane 3 had a perfect day on the water winning all three races. However, James Howell's Cape 31 Gelert is still top of the class, but only on countback from Sandra Askew's Cape 31 Flying Jenny. Sailplane 3 has moved up to third, just two points off the lead with two races remaining in the Championships.

IRC Three
Howell & Newell's A35 Arcus was just third at the start of racing on day two, but three straight bullets put the team first in class after six races. Adam Gosling's JPK 1080 Yes! is just a point behind in second. Ed Mockridge's JPK 1010 Elaine Again scored two more podium race scores to finish the day in third for the series.

IRC Four
With three different race winners today, IRC Four produced some highly competitive racing. Simon Clifton's A31 Aztec took Race 4, John Allen's X-302 Antix won Race 5, and Race 6 went to David Murrin's Classic sloop Cetaweyo. Giovanni Belgrano's 39ft classic sloop Whooper did not win a race today, but a 2-2-3 insured that the team retained the class lead, albeit by a smaller margin of just three points after six races. -- Louay Habib/RORC

The Nations Trophy comes alive with spectacular racing in Porto Cervo
Spectacular racing conditions will live long in the memory of the ClubSwan Racing fleet at the fourth edition of The Nations Trophy regatta in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.

The Mistral wind delivered in full, notably on the coastal race in the spectacular setting of the Costa Smeralda which saw the three ClubSwan one-design classes unleashed with some yachts reaching 20-plus knots surfing in flat waters.

Add in three days of competitive and friendly inshore racing - which saw seven races in varied and equally challenging conditions - and The Nations Trophy provided a memorable experience for all the 28 race teams gathered at the renowned Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, who managed the regatta and hosted the superb shoreside social events.

After four days of racing Italy emerged as the winner of The Nations Trophy, with the combined scores of their two best performing yachts - the ClubSwan 50s Vitamina and Cuordileone - putting them two points ahead of Germany, with Monaco taking the final place on the podium.

The victory marks Italy's second Nations Trophy title having won the biennial event in 2019, while Spain and Germany have also claimed the trophy with wins in 2017 and 2021 respectively.

The ClubSwan Racing season continues at the Copa Del Rey Mapfre regatta in Mallorca starting on July 31.

Cup Spy - June 23: Spithill on speed, cavitation and co-helmsmen .. Swiss start speed-testing
Coincidentally, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, the Italian America's Cup Challenger, based in Cagliari, Sardinia got similar winds to those which prevailed today in Barcelona.

In the dockside interview after today's sailing session Jimmy Spithill (AUS), a co-helmsman aboard the Luna Rossa test boat (or LEQ12), said he didn't expect to get fresh winds like today (around 20kts) in Barcelona at the time of the America's Cup regattas - which start in mid August 2024.

"We had 20 plus kts of wind, and flat water. I wish we would get this in Barcelona. But I don't think we will!"

Most teams seem to be putting considerable design effort into resolving cavitation issues around the foils - which inhibit high speed and can lead to control problems.

"In that sort of breeze and flat water, you're going to hit that cavitation limit," Spithill said. "We're getting some very high speeds. But we get cavitation in those conditions, for sure."

Like most teams, the 2010 and 2013 America's Cup winner would not disclose their top speed to date, or confirm that the had passed the 55kt mark.

Curtin, Intrepid Honor Tiedemann Legacy with Convincing Classics Win
Newport, Rhode Island, USA: For some regattas, the actual competition can seem like a supporting component. That was certainly the case this weekend for Jack Curtin, the owner of the legendary 12 Metre Intrepid, which sailed to a convincing win in Class 1 in the Robert H. Tiedemann Classics Regatta. Winning is always nice, but there's so much more to this event that the results for Curtin.

For many years, Curtin raced Intrepid, which won the America's Cup in 1967 and 1970, in the Modern 12 Metre Division. But sailing the only wooden Modern - the other boats are newer and built of aluminum - and against crews that were increasingly more professional became less and less fun.

Racing against two other 12 Metres, the 59-foot Hound and the 76-foot Wild Horses, Intrepid was impossible to catch, winning all four races to take Class 1 by four points over Hound, skippered by Dan Litchfield.

In Class 2, the winning boat, Black Watch, is a familiar name to classic yacht enthusiasts, but the skipper is not. Austin Fragomen (third from the left) is usually found sailing at the cutting edge of the sport on custom carbon-fiber boats all named Interlodge. This season, Fragomen took advantage of the opportunity to join the syndicate that owns Black Watch, a 68-foot yawl.

Black Watch won the two races on Saturday and then was able to hold off a hard charge from the 95-year-old 12 Metre Onawa, skippered by past New York Yacht Club Commodore Christopher J. Culver. The key race, says Fragomen, was the first race on Saturday, a 10-mile tour centered around Gould Island just north of the Pell Bridge. After two hours of sailing, in light winds and passing rain showers, the top three boats were separated by just seconds on corrected time, with Black Watch first, the legendary Dorade in second and Onawa third.

In Class 3, the largest of the regatta with 10 boats, it was Peter McClennen's Gamecock (at right) that came out on top of a duel with Chris Bouzaid's Bijou II. The two low-slung wooden sloops were all but impossible to beat in the light air. In today's deciding race, Gamecock finished just 13 seconds ahead of Bijou II on corrected time. In fact, in the three races Class 3 sailed, Bijou II and Gamecock were separated by just 51 seconds, total, of corrected time.

In the S Class, which is one of the oldest active one-design classes in the world, it was Angus Davis' Squaw that won the regatta, rebounding from a fifth in Race 1 to take the overall win by 2 points over Michael McCaffrey's Osprey.

The next edition of the Robert H. Tiedemann Regatta is scheduled for the last weekend in June of 2025.

Meanwhile, Spindrift, who faced difficulties on the second day, regained their speed and concluded the regatta on a high as helm Yann Guichard explained: "It was a great day, we were waiting for a light thermal breeze, the famous sechard, and it came in for the last two races where we were finally able to foil upwind and downwind and it's great because we won both."

Although the new Alinghi Red Bull Racing crew encountered some challenges on the second day, struggling with their starts, everything seemed to fall into place today. They ultimately secured a fourth-place finish in the overall leaderboard, tantalizingly close to a podium position.
