WindWhisper Racing Team leads both fleets toward the Med
The Polish-flagged team has stretched away to a 90 mile lead, winning the Vasco da Gama Mirpuri Foundation Prize in the process.

As skipper Daryl Wislang pushed his WindWhisper Racing Team across the line of 37-degress north latitude at 10:04 UTC on Wednesday morning, his team prepared to turn east towards the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea.

By crossing this 37-degree latitude at the head of both fleets, Wislang's team wins the Vasco da Gama Mirpuri Foundation Prize, celebrating the heritage of the great navigators of The Ocean Race. In this case, WindWhisper Racing Team navigator Aksel Magdahl will be given the award in Genova.

While this milestone is in their wake, the team still has over 1000 nautical miles to run to the finish line and very challenging, light conditions ahead.

However they have built a nice margin and should be in good shape for the approach to the Mediterranean Sea with the four chasing boats in the VO65 class all at least 90 miles back.

In the IMOCA fleet, Team Holcim-PRB is working hard to hold onto its lead as both Biotherm and Team Malizia keep nibbling at their advantage.

Paul Meilhat's Biotherm is now within 10 miles, and Team Malizia has closed up as well, sitting some 33 miles behind.

Swan One-Designs Put In A Great Show At The Nations Trophy
Porto Cervo, Italy: Today brought the first day of racing for The Nations Trophy - Swan One Design, a regatta organised by the YCCS in association with ClubSwan Racing and reserved for Nautor's one-design classes - the ClubSwan 50, ClubSwan 42 and ClubSwan 36. As outlined in the morning's skippers' briefing, the Race Committee held three windward-leeward races for each class in a south-easterly wind that increased from an initial 8 knots up to 14 on the regatta course off Porto Cervo.

With a total of 29 boats competing, all the classes enjoyed fast starts, tight mark roundings and duels, reversals of fortune and, at times, photo finishes on the line.

In the ClubSwan 36 division Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio's G Spot with Michele Paoletti as tactician stormed ahead, notching up two firsts and a second place. Following in the provisional overall classification is Fra Martina, owned by the Pavesio brothers, with two solid thirds and a fourth place - the result of shrewd tactical choices by Rufo Bressani. Third place at the end of the first day went to Edoardo Ferragamo's Cuordileone.

In the ClubSwan 42 class, meanwhile, the points are much closer, with Jose-Maria Meseguer's Spanish yacht Pez de Abril leading by just two points over its closest rival, Massimo De Campo's Selene Alifax. Both brought home consistent results, never below fourth place, but no wins. Andrea Rossi's Mela had a peculiar day, where despite two clear victories, he sits third in the overall standings, three points behind the leader, due to a withdrawal in the first race. Canopo is in fourth place on equal points (11).

The largest class, the ClubSwan 50, was dominated by Marcus Brennecke's Hatari who, thanks to two victories in the first and third races, takes the lead in the provisional classification, albeit just two points ahead of Leonardo Ferragamo's Cuordileone and Andrea Masi's Ulika. Cuordileone takes second place overall by virtue of her victory in the second race of the day.

11th Hour Racing Team Redress hearing will be on 29 June in Genova
On Wednesday, Phil Lawrence, the Regatta Director for The Ocean Race, announced the World Sailing International Jury has provisionally scheduled the hearing for 11th Hour Racing Team's Request for Redress on 29 June at 1000. It will be an in-person hearing, in Genova.

Since the outcome of 11th Hour Racing redress hearing may affect all the fleet, the International Jury is obligated to make as fair an arrangement as possible for all boats affected and therefore wants to give the full IMOCA fleet the right to be present at the hearing to present their views and ask questions.

Accordingly, the International Jury, acting under Racing Rules of Sailing 60.3(b), will simultaneously consider redress for Team Holcim-PRB, Team Malizia, Biotherm and GUYOT envrionnement - Team Europe, following the collision at the start of Leg 7. The incident resulted in both 11th Hour Racing Team and GUYOT envrionnement - Team Europe retiring from the leg with damage and 11th Hour Racing Team subsequently lodging a Request for Redress.

The GUYOT team is sailing to its home port in France while 11th Hour Racing Team made repairs to its IMOCA and is heading towards Genova with the intention to race the last In-Port race of this edition on 1st July.

Laurent Hay remains Finn World No. 1 after major events
After placing as runner up at both the Open Europeans and the Finn World Masters, France's Laurent Hay remains at the top of the Finn World Ranking List for issue No. 3. 50th Rolex Fastnet Race - how ocean racing came of age
In one month's time, on 22 July, yet another record-sized fleet will depart from Cowes to tackle the 50th edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's premier event: the Rolex Fastnet Race. At present from across the globe 491 yachts of all shapes and sizes, ranging from 9m to 30m, are on the race's provisional entry list. This is 26% more than the previous record entry of 388 that participated in 2019's pre-COVID edition – the largest leap in entries in the event's recent history. Given this is more than twice that of any of the other classic international 600 mile offshore races, the Rolex Fastnet Race is soundly the biggest offshore yacht race in the world.

In 98 years, the Rolex Fastnet Race, boat design and the sport of ocean racing have together come an unimaginable way. The first Fastnet Race, originally called 'The Ocean Race' was held in 1925 on a course from the Solent, where the start was from the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Ryde, before the boats exited the Solent to east, then headed to the Fastnet Rock, finishing in Plymouth. With the start moving to Cowes the following year, the race going biennial in 1931, gaining Bishop Rock as a turning mark, and, as a one-off, finishing back in Cowes in 1933, the course remained largely fixed until the fleet outgrew Plymouth and was moved to Cherbourg-en-Cotentin in offshore racing-friendly France for the first time in 2021.

Today the Rolex Fastnet Race, more than any other sailing events in the world, represents the full pantheon of offshore yacht racing from mum and dads in their family cruisers to sailing schools and 'pay to play' boats, to the more competitive amateur IRC teams to pro teams and the French classes such as the Class40, IMOCA and Ultim. EG Martin and the original pioneers of the race and the sport would be beyond proud. -- James Boyd/RORC

Female 18 Footer Opportunity Female participation in sport in 2023 is reaching very high levels of achievement and spectator approval as the girls show their skills against each other and at times in competition against male opposition.

18ft skiff racing is usually regarded as a male-dominated sport by nature of the 'beast' machines, but several talented female skippers and crews have proved that they can take on the males and tame the 'beasts' without fear or favour.

Now, for the upcoming 2023-24 season, the Australian 18 Footers League is looking to recruit new female talent to ensure opportunities are continued to be provided for female sailors in the 18s.

Who better to promote the search than Yvette Heritage, who after four seasons in the worlds best 18 footer fleet is on a sailing break after having her first child. While keen to get back into the 18s shortly, Yvette is driven to ensure competitive female participation continues in the 18s fleet for years to come.

The Australian 18 Footers League is keen to hear from female sailors who have the skills and drive to sail competitively in the 18ft skiffs. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

SB20 Worlds
Different winners in all four races of Day 3 with the most consistent sailing from Another Affair (POR3723) who continue to lead on the overall standings.

Great job by the Race Committee to conclude 4 races today with wind stable to acceptable limit with shifts on the racecourse. With every day of the championship the low tide happens later and later in the day, so starts are still super tricky. The day opened with a general recall, but quickly switched to Black flag, which caught a couple of boats in Race 5.

Another Affair sailed the most consistent day - with no big mistakes, no BFDs and staying always in top 3-5 places. Their worst result overall is 7th in two races, one of which becomes a discard, so they still have some room for an error. Team Ares, however, are only 4 points behind and Another Affair will have to keep their consistency for two more days.

With 8 races completed including one discard the fleet enters the second part of the championship. Thursday is promised to be windy and Friday, on the contrary, very light. It looks like there will be one more discard after two more races, which seems possible with tomorrow's Northerly. This will help the teams who scored BFDs to drop those results and possibly improve their standings.
