Wetsuit Outlet and Zhik International Moth World Championship Overall
It wasn't supposed to go like this. After being initially postponed in 2020 for obvious reasons, the 2023 Wetsuit Outlet and Zhik International Moth World Championship at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) should have been rewarded with the amazing South Westerly winds and perfect foiling conditions that Portland Harbour is renowned for. Instead, the high pressure system that was locked over the UK provided fickle and feeble easterlies.

In the end, after seven days, just two races were completed for the two qualifying groups. Principal Race Officer David Campbell-James did all he possibly could to run racing over the week, and the groups were alternately sent out into the harbour when conditions looked hopeful, once even managing a start which had to be abandoned after the first leg with half the fleet still languishing at the start line while the leader rounded the windward mark. It simply wouldn't have been fair racing to let it run on.

Reducing the number of races needed to make this a valid championship was also looked at, but the consensus was that this wouldn't have been satisfactory, and as the hours, minutes and seconds ticked by on the final day of the event, it became increasingly obvious that the 2023 Moth World Championship title wasn't going to be awarded.

Perfect Conditions, Great Racing, Fierce Competition for North Sails Race Day
Block Island Race Week's 30th edition, presented by Margaritaville, had "champagne conditions" for the first day of racing, North Sails Race Day, on all three race circles.

Racing got off on time after boats poured out of the Great Salt Pond spit from Champlin's Resort and Marina, the Boat Basin and Payne's Dock to form the infamous "boat parade" heading for the start lines.

From the crew on Ohana, the words to describe the day were "beautiful, stunning, amazing day of racing," said Yori Petunous. "Despite a finish 'toward' the rear," he quipped with a laugh and a smile. "The crew will be ready for day 2," he promised as they moved off the afternoon dock for a bit of "island time."

As the way sailboat racing sometimes goes, there were a number of protests pending at the time of publication, so some results maybe in flux. It goes to show that the first day of racing was a push out of the gate. Tomorrow, the 174 boats will head into Regatta Craft Mixers for day two of racing.

Tricky opening day at SB20 Worlds 2023 with two races
Like everything in the Netherlands the skippers briefing was called sharp on time at Scheveningen Yacht Club this Monday ahead of the first racing day at the SB20 Worlds 2023 announcing two possible races.

Nice wind and choppy sea greeted the fleet as they left the harbour eager to get into racing. Despite having a nice stable westerly breeze the opening race of the championship did not happen on time. Finally, after two general recalls a black flag decided the starting positions and caused some boats a painful BFD.

Many boats found themselves stuck in second or even third row. It was the game of tactics and sailing skills to make the best out of the situation. For the third start all the boats stayed on the Committee side with no one on the pin end. Quite impressive to see a 50+ fleet squeezing into a half of the starting line.

Wind direction was contrary to yesterdays' practice race and sailing with the ebbing tide made the boats jump over the line early.12-13 knots of breeze allowed for some spectacular racing in the waves with little or no planing with a mix of teams in top positions throughout the race. Tasmanian National champions onboard Ares coped best with the tricky conditions and won the opening race of the event.

In top 10 after two races we find at least three Portuguese teams which puts them in a good lead for the Nations Cup trophy awarded at the end of the event to the best performing nation. In 2022 the SB20 Class UK took the trophy home, but can they keep it in 2023 we will find out this Friday.

For Tuesday the first warning signal is at 11:25 with potentially three races.

Spanish J80 Championship
Click on image for photo gallery.

Spanish J80 Championship The waters of the Abra in Biscay have witnessed this past weekend an exciting J80 Spanish Championship organised by the Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club in the year of its 125th anniversary. Several of the best Spanish crews of the class have participated, highlighting the two-time World Champions: Jose Maria "Pichu" Torcida (La Trinité-sur-Mer 2007 and Newport 2010) and Ignacio Camino (Kiel 2008 and Copenhagen 2011), who would measure their forces with the local and current runner-up of the world José "Tacos" Azqueta in addition to young values and other not so young that could fight for the podium. There were three days of regattas in which the organisers were able to hold eight races off Sopelana beach.

The 27 crews were able to sail 8 races in different wind conditions, with north-easterly winds on the first day reaching up to 20 knots and north-westerly winds on the other two days, somewhat lighter but with a messy sea that made the crews struggle.

Interest until the last moment: "BioBizz" and "Fredo La Estrella del Norte" were tied on points going into the last day's races. Only two races were held, which were a continuous change for the title at each passing buoy, but it was the "Dorsia Covirán" that finally reached the prize, with "Tacos" Azqueta's boat in second place and "Pichu" Torcida's boat in third place.

Victory for Wylde and Tomasi on Silvaplana at WingFoil Racing World Cup
Fiona Wylde (USA) and Alessandro Tomasi (ITA) respectively have become the women's and men's champions at Wingfoil Racing World Cup Silvaplana.

With no wind for the final day, the results all hung on the 10 races from the first two days. Tomasi, the 2021 World Champion, earned two crucial wins in the long-distance races of the opening day. The dominant performer of the past six months or more has been Mathis Ghio (FRA) who battled hard with Tomasi on that first day but finished runner-up in both long distance heats.

The results from day one proved to be the decisive difference in the eventual outcome because from there the men's fleet was split into two qualifying groups, yellow and blue. Day two brought the best breeze of the competition with eight short-course races completed in winds ranging from 10 to 20 knots. Tomasi was the master of yellow group, winning seven of the eight heats, conceding victory only to Luca Franchi (ITA), one of the other strong riders in the ever-improving Italian squad.

Meanwhile over in blue group Ghio was proving even more dominant, winning all eight heats. However, this still wasn't enough to close the gap to Tomasi. The Frenchman would have to wait until the gold fleet finals to be able to take the fight directly to Tomasi and the other Italians.

The next Wingfoil Racing World Cup takes place in Sardinia in October.

More challenging light winds in Kiel
The third day of Kiel week saw good racing in the early morning and late afternoon on Monday ( 19 June) after some delay during the rest of the day as the seabreeze and the gradient fought each other.

In the 470 class there are three top German crews – World Champions Luise Wanser and Philipp Autenrieth, European Championship runners up Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort and Malte and Anastasiya Winkel who are selected for next month's Marseille Olympic Test regatta.

But the elite trio are so far being overshadowed by young Theres Dahnke and Matti Cipra who now lead the fleet after having sailed six of their eight races series. After Monday's two wins and a fourth – which is their discard to date – Dahnke and Cipra have two points in hand over Diesch and Markfort. To date the 470s have seen light winds only, not more than nine knots of pressure over any of their six races.

The 49erFX class were on the morning showcase arena where they contested two decent races - marginal twin wiring - before the gradient breeze was burned off by the rising mercury and competition ground to a halt, Race 3 abandoned and the fleet brought ashore. Top of the table after two races are Kiel's Maru Scheel and Freya Feilcke who won both their races.

In the 49er Class the USA's Andrew Mollerus and Ian Macdiarmid hold top position after a 12, 5 today. Racing for Malta, German born Richard Schulteis and Brittany's Youenn Bertin just teamed up six days before this regatta but lie third so far, reeling off an impressive race win in 11 kts of breeze.

The Nations Trophy
The ClubSwan Racing family is preparing to gather once again for one of the highlights of the season, the fourth edition of the eagerly awaited The Nations Trophy.

No fewer than 28 race teams crewed by sailors from over 24 nations will come together in the magnificent setting of Porto Cervo in Sardinia, based at the renowned Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the event organiser, for five days of fiercely contested but friendly racing between June 20-24.

Three ClubSwan Racing one-design classes, the ClubSwan 50, ClubSwan 42 and ClubSwan 36, will be racing on their own separate courses, each yacht competing for individual points in their class, while aiming to contribute to their country's overall score in both The Nations Trophy and the season-long The Nations League competition.

The 2023 edition of The Nations Trophy also offers something special ashore with the Owners' Dinner at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. This year, the occasion attended by owners and their guests will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Leonardo Ferragamo's acquisition of Nautor Swan and the creation of ClubSwan. To celebrate this milestone and commemorate the occasion, ClubSwan Racing Main Partner Ferragamo has designed a unique gift for all attendees.

Eight Bells - Sir James Hardy
Sir James Hardy South Australia's champion yachtsman and wine boss Sir James Hardy has died aged 90.

Widely known as "Gentleman Jim", Sir James was an Olympic sailor before becoming part of the first team to wrest the America's Cup from the United States.

Despite two Olympics and becoming a world champion, his ultimate ambition remained victory in the America's Cup. After three failed attempts, Sir James finally tasted success in 1983 as back-up skipper for Australia II. In 2003, the family wine business Hardy's was taken over and became part of the Accolade stable of wines.

"Now we'll be able to go through the door and make arrangements and hopefully lead an Australian push into countries like Germany," he said in 2003.

Sir James was knighted in 1981 for services to yachting. South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said Sir James made a "significant contribution" to the state and nation through philanthropy, his work in the wine industry and yachting.

"He was a business leader, Olympian and famously led the charge for Australia in three America's Cup campaigns."

Australian Sailing said Sir James is survived by his wife Joan, brother David, sister Pamela and sons David and Richard.
