Magic Carpet 3 leads Rolex Giraglia offshore
The third and final part of this special 70th Rolex Giraglia - the offshore race around Giraglia rock to Genoa - successfully set sail from Saint-Tropez just after midday today, with 27 maxis among the 155 starters. This offshore race is the fifth of seven events in the International Maxi Association's 2022-23 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge that started with last autumn's Rolex Middle Sea Race and will conclude with August's Palermo-Montecarlo.

After three days of light airs inshore racing on or around the Golfe de Saint-Tropez, the start of the offshore today was forecast to be ultra-light but in fact local cloud activity enabled the fleet to get away in an easterly or ENEerly wind that peaked at 10 knots.

Last night the race committee changed the course: instead of heading southwest to the usual turning mark at Île du Levant off Hyeres, the new course sent the fleet further east to a laid mark off La Chretienne, east of Saint-Raphaël. From there the route resumes as usual, to the Giraglia rock off north Corsica and on to the Genoa finish. The new course is 215 miles compared to 241.

Wetsuit Outlet and Zhik International Moth World Championship Day 3
After Blue fleet's race the sailors were sent ashore under postponement in the hope that the wind would fill in again from the south-west. Once again it flattered to deceive, every so often raising the sailors' hopes, only to die away shortly after.

It took a very early start, but racing is finally underway at the Wetsuit Outlet and Zhik International Moth World Championship! Sailors were already busy in the dinghy park at 6am, getting ready for an 8am start, with Yellow fleet the first to hit the water.

A cracking North Easterly breeze of around 15 knots meant the Moths were hitting the high notes as they blitzed around Portland Harbour ahead of racing, with the spray shining in the early morning sunshine.

Race Officer David Campbell-James knew there could be no hanging around, as the wind was set to drop, and he must have been relieved when the sailors played their part and he could signal clean starts in all three races held. As predicted the wind steadily dropped, until it was lowriding conditions in the third race of the morning, which was the first for Blue fleet.

It will be another 8am start for the fleet on Thursday, trying to make the most of any breeze that shows up in event which has so far been plagued by light wind.

Team JAJO wins the VO65 In Port Race
The local heroes on the Dutch-flagged Team JAJO made a statement of intent right from the start of the VO65 In Port Race in The Hague on Wednesday afternoon by crossing ahead of the entire fleet on port tack, a high-risk, high-reward manoeuvre that allowed them to build a solid lead at the first turning gate.

Behind them, the overall race leader, WindWhisper Racing Team, rounded in second place with Viva Mexico following. But the Mexican team elected to race the downwind leg with a masthead code zero sail, which didn't pay off, and allowed Mirpuri/Trifork to make a pass.

On the second lap of the course, WindWhisper skipper Pablo Arrarte worked every shift to split away from Jelmer van Beek's Team JAJO to try and get a sniff of the lead. But the JAJO team protected well and even extended to earn a wire-to-wire win in front of a delirious home crowd.

VO65 class - In Port Race - The Hague
1. Team JAJO - 6 points
2. WindWhisper Racing Team - 5 points
3. Mirpuri-Trifork Racing - 4 points
4. Austrian Ocean Racing powered by Team Genova - 3 points
5. Viva Mexico - 2 points
6. Ambersail 2 - DNS - 0 points

Meanwhile, sailors in both fleets are preparing for a challenging race for the Grand Finale in Genova, Italy.

Racing starts on Thursday afternoon at 13:10 local time (CEST) for the VO65 class and at 18:15 for the IMOCA fleet.

ORC Double Handed European Championship
Helsingor, Denmark: Under sunny skies and with light winds, 31 teams representing 8 European nations today started a 290-mile course to compete in the 2023 ORC Double-Handed European Championship. This event is hosted by the Helsingør Sejlklub in conjunction with the Round Sealand Race Week, which is being sailed for the 77th time this year and is one of Denmark's largest races with more than 1000 attendees.

The ORC fleet is divided into three classes with results scored for each class and titles awarded in each class based on these results. Class A and Class B have 10 entries each, with 11 entries in Class C. These are summarized in the fleet's scratch sheets available at this link.

Among the favorites are teams that competed in last year's inaugural ORC DH World Championship held at the Gotland Runt race in Sweden. This includes ZEUS, a Z30+ sailed by Anders Dahlsjo and Martin Stromberg who are the reigning Class A World Champions. There are also boats that have competed in past full-crewed ORC championships and are now here trying DH sailing... such as Karl and Maren Book on their Landmark 43 WHITE SHADOW from Norway.

Wingfoil Racing World Cup Ensis Engadinwing
A new star rose in the women's fleet on day two of the Wingfoil Racing World Cup Silvaplana. This is Fiona Wylde's first World Cup event in IWSA wingfoil racing, so it was understandable that the American rider flew across the Atlantic to the Swiss Alps with few expectations. She just wanted to gauge the competition and to get a measure of how her skills compare with the world's best.

With winds blowing around 12 to 20 knots across Lake Silvaplana, Wylde was as surprised as anyone to discover she is proving seriously competitive. Out of a total eight races, the 26-year-old from Hood River, Oregon, took three wins, four seconds and a fourth.

there are two clear leaders on either side of the men's qualifying draw. Current event leader Alessandro Tomasi has been the dominant performer in yellow fleet, winning seven of the eight heats. French rider Oscar Leclair crossed the finish line of race 11 in the lead but had been disqualified for breaking the start line too soon. His anguish and disappointment led to elation for Luca Franchi, the young Italian winning his first race of the regatta to move to third overall.

Reigning World Champion Mathis Ghio said his head hadn't been in the right place for the opening day of competition, although he was still lying in second after the two long distance races of Tuesday. Today the 20-year-old was fully back in the game as Ghio dominated blue fleet.

EUROSAF Beneteau First 18 SE & Seascape18 Open European Championship
The European title went to Slovenia, home teams from Austria took silver and bronze.

"All together" was the slogan of the continental championship in First 18 SE class which took place in Gmunden at Lake Traunsee, Austria. The local organizer in cooperation with the shipyard, the national dealer, the class association as well as the Austrian Sailing Federation and EUROSAF made this year's EUROSAF BENETEAU First 18 SE & Seascape18 Open European Championship a successful spectacle. It was also the final highlight of the major Austrian sailing event "Traunsee Week".

On the water, a women's trio around Race Officer Anastasia Weinberger ensured that everything ran smoothly. 11 races were sailed in 4 days, the Slovenian favorites Dejan Presen/Denes Szilágyi underlined their title ambitions from the very first start. Last year's silver medalists took the first three races and never really came under pressure. Behind them, there was a battle for the remaining places on the podium. Angelika Stark/Martin Poll (AUT) sailed to silver. In a fair showdown, she took the Vice European Championship title with a two-point lead over fellow OeSV president Dieter Schneider and his helmsman Lukas Hobiger.

The European Championship was attended by teams from Sweden to Serbia, a total of 35 teams from seven nations found their way to Lake Traunsee. Preparations are already underway for a great championship next year. -- Doris Gstatter, EUROSAF Secretary General
