Rolex Giraglia - Second day of coastal regattas
Light winds at Saint-Tropez for the two fleets which today were divided between two courses: the Maxis on an upwind-downwind off the beach of Pampelonne, Groups 1 and 2 along the coast for 19 miles for the former and 13 for the latter. The weather was the reverse of yesterday's conditions, with the yachts on the coastal courses starting on time between 1210 and 1225 (the second start of group 2 with a black flag) with about 8 kn from E/NE. But at Pampelonne there was a long wait until 1420 when a gentle 8 kn breeze spread over the course and permitted the race to start over a course of about 1.7 miles a leg.

While the Maxis fought it out round the marks, at 1514 Peter Harrison's Botin 52 Jolt 3 was the first in real-time to cross the finish a few hundred metres from the breakwater of the port of Saint-Tropez. Very close behind was the TP 52 owned by Carl Peter Forster and then the Botin 52 Caro. But we had to wait until the rest of the fleet finished to have the day's results.

Among the Maxis, after about two hours of racing the leading positions basically confirmed the results of the previous day, with Dario Ferrari's Pepe Cannonball, Benoit de Froidmont's Wallyno and Valter Pizzoli's Les Amis leading in their classes.

* Despite exceptionally light, tricky conditions, the race committee pulled off a miracle on this second day of inshore racing at the 70th Rolex Giraglia, managing to run one windward-leeward for the 21 maxi yachts. The race course today for the maxi fleet was moved from the Golfe de Saint-Tropez to neighbouring Pampelonne Bay, known for its world-famous beach.

The three days of inshore racing at Rolex Giraglia, organised by the Yacht Club Italiano in collaboration with the Yacht Club Sanremo and Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, immediately preceding Wednesday's offshore race to Genoa, is the third event of the International Maxi Association's 2023 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.

The fleet had to wait for almost three hours on the water for the wind to fill in, but eventually their patience paid and the first of two starts for the maxi classes took place at 1420. With conditions ultra-light for a second day, it was once again Dario Ferrari's 75ft Cannonball that prevailed in the Maxi 1 class. Similarly IMA President Benoît de Froidmont's Wally 60 Wallyno scored her second bullet in Maxi 2. But today both their winning margins were considerably reduced. -- James Boyd, IMA

Cup Spy: Brits ring the changes on their test boat
Three teams sailed today - the Swiss, British and Italians - technically the Kiwis did too, but we covered their sail in our last report, as their content was available before our deadline.

What happened in the Cup - June 9, 2023:

Luna Rossa sailed out of Cagliari for the third successive day, after a ten day break.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing was two-boat racing off Barcelona. Once again Ernesto Bertarelli was back as a co-helmsman along with Dean Barker, and Jason Waterhouse on flight control. Whether these are permanent appointments to the "mushroom crew" remains to be seen.

After a day off the Brits emerged from the shed with several new tweaks - which had most observers guessing. Most obvious was a forward facing pitot tube on the starboard wingfoil. There was some demon-tweaking around the mast - all detailed in the report from the AC37 Joint Recon team. However the most intriguing was the action of one crew member painting a coating on the upper surface of the starboard wingfoil. The process was repeated three times - presumably with some form of speed coating which could be seen by the cameras - to show the behavior of the water as it encountered the foil. The Brits tried out some more developments, as described above and below. While the Brits will have signed off their final hull shape for their Cup raceboat, the testing of parts and innovations will continue almost right up to the Cup, which for the Challengers, starts in 14 months time.

As mentioned technically Emirates Team NZ raced on this day, Friday however with time zones being what they are, we ran their content as soon as it was available - which was was yesterday.

American Magic, last sailed on March 10, from Pensacola Fl, and is expected to be sailing from Barcelona around June 22.

No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).

BSI: Big Boats - Big Gear
BSI: Big Boats - Big Gear Question: What does Koru, Black Pearl, EOS, Athena, Maltese Falcon Aquijo, Sea Eagle II, M5 and Badis have in common?

Answer: They are all supplied with equipment from companies within the BSI Group; BSI, Hundested Propeller, Ocean Marine Systems (OMS) and OYS.

Like all superyachts, these ranging from 70m up to 127m, demand the very best. Captains and Owners put the yachts through their paces, the loads they experience are phenomenal and the equipment needs to be too. The OMS Thrusters need to be powerful yet light and compact. They are. The BSI and OYS Rigging and OMS Hydraulic Cylinders must be strong yet sleek and aesthetically pleasing. They are. It is essential the Hundested Propeller CPP, and hybrid propulsion equipment provides enough power on demand whilst operating as quietly as possible. They achieve that. It's this intricate detail where the expertise spanning over 100 years from with the group comes into its own.

Within the BSI Group we look to manufacture the best-in-class products with the strength to handle anything a raging sea and the elements exposes them to, without compromising control or speed. We have something for everyone, manufacturing rigging, propellers, hatches and portlights, thrusters and hydraulic cylinders for boats from 30ft up to the largest in the world.

The BSI Group consists of BSI, OYS, Jefa Steering, Hundested Propeller, GORI Propeller and Ocean Marine Systems (OMS), who manufacture rigging, hatches, portlights, blocks, steering systems, propulsions systems, controllable pitch propellers, folding propellers, thrusters, hydraulic cylinders and through-hull instrument deployment hoist.

Mark Foy Trophy Four top Australian 18ft skiff teams, representing the Australian 18 Footers League, will contest the 2023 Mark Foy Trophy regatta at Lake Garda, Italy from 26th-30th June when they take on the best of the Europeans in the 15th contest for the coveted title which honours the name of the man who was the 'father' of the class on Sydney Harbour back in 1892.

Mark Foy was one of the most significant historical figures in Australian sailing history. A visionary who wanted to take sailing to a national and international level, and became the first Australian entrant in an international sailing competition when he took his 22ft boat, 'Irex', to England in 1898.

The strong Australian contingent includes defending champion Marcus Ashley-Jones (Lazarus Capital Partners), the present Australian champion Keagan York (Finport Finance), 2000 JJ Giltinan world champion John 'Woody' Winning (Yandoo) and Season Point Score winner at the League, Simon Nearn (Burrawang-Young Henrys).

The annual event is important to the Australian 18 Footers League, which has been a strong supporter of international competition since it conducted the first world championship regatta on Sydney Harbour in 1938.

Following the introduction of New Zealand and Fiji up to the 1950s, the League made a concentrated effort throughout the late 1960s-early 1970s to expand the iconic Australian 18 footers to the USA, UK and Europe. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
