Giorgio Armani Superyacht Porto Cervo, 7th June 2023. The Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta got off to a perfect start today, the event is organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of title sponsor Giorgio Armani, and is now in its 16th edition. A north-easterly breeze of about 7 knots intensified, as expected, to around 12 knots and rotated towards the southeast over the course of the day. At 1 p.m. the Race Committee sounded the start for the 45-metre Gitana, the first superyacht off the line in the staggered starting sequence used by the Superyacht Racing Association to ensure safety on the course for these imposing vessels. The Southern Wind division, reserved for yachts from the shipyard of the same name, then got going at 1:30 p.m. The departure for the Southern Wind Rendezvous was instead a fleet affair, with the SW105 Sørvind winning the start.

The route chosen by the Race Committee took both divisions, Superyacht and Southern Wind, from the start off Porto Cervo to an offset mark, before rounding the island of Monaci. After leaving the Monaci lighthouse to port, the superyachts sailed up the coast of the island of Caprera and entered the Saline gulf, where they left a mark to port before returning to Porto Cervo via the Bisce Pass, for a total of approximately 20 miles.

The first day saw the 33-metre Baltic 108 Win Win take victory in the Superyacht division, followed by another 108-footer in the form of Inoui, with owner-helmsman and regular participant in the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta Marco Vogele on board. Inoui fought for most of the course with Pattoo, another 33-metre yacht which already has a win in Porto Cervo under her belt, when she was known as Missy. The Wallycento V, meanwhile, claimed the top spot in the Combined Performance and Cruising Class.

Racing continues tomorrow, 8th June, with a breeze similar to today's forecast. The start for the Southern Wind Rendezvous division is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., followed by the Superyacht division at 12 midday.

Franck Cammas Joins 11th Hour Racing for Leg 6

Franck Cammas Aarhus, Denmark: 11th Hour Racing Team has unveiled its crew line-up for Leg 6 of The Ocean Race - the short, three-day coastal dash to The Hague, The Netherlands. Skipper Charlie Enright (USA) has called in France's Sailor of the Decade, Franck Cammas (FRA), as Trimmer, alongside Navigator Simon Fisher (GBR), Trimmer Francesca Clapcich (ITA), and Pierre Bouras (FRA) as Media Crew Member.

Cammas is one of France's most successful sailors, a previous winner of The Ocean Race as skipper of Groupama in 2012, and a six-time ORMA World Champion. Appointed Sailor of the Decade in 2020, the multihull expert has won every race he has entered with the Groupe Edmond de Rothschild Ultime since 2019 and is currently co-skipper with Jérémie Beyou on the IMOCA Charal 2.

Francesca Clapcich returns to the rotating squad of sailors for the final two legs, replacing Justine Mettraux, who has returned to her solo Vendée Globe campaign.

11th Hour Racing Team currently tops the overall Ocean Race leaderboard with 28 points, ahead of Team Holcim-PRB by one point, and Team Malizia by four points. There are 10 points remaining in this edition of the race - five apiece for the next two legs.

The fleet of five IMOCAs will leave Denmark's second city, Aarhus, on Thursday, June 8, at 1815 CET [1615 UTC], and the 800 nautical mile (921 mile/1,482 km) hop to The Hague, with a 'fly-by' past the German port of Kiel, is expected to take around three days.

11th Hour Racing Team Crew for Leg 6
Aarhus, Denmark, to The Hague, The Netherlands:

Charlie Enright (USA) - Skipper
Simon Fisher (GBR) - Navigator
Franck Cammas (FRA) - Trimmer

Aarhus Leg start preview - the most complex leg yet
At 800 nautical miles, Leg 6 may be the shortest of the race but it is also one of the most complex. From the start in Aarhus the fleet will head south for a fly-by in Kiel before turning north to head back up the eastern side of Denmark. Once around the top of the country the fleet exits the Baltic and heads out into the North Sea for the run south to the finish in The Hague, anticipated to be on Saturday evening 10 June.

"The leg to The Hague via Kiel is one of the most complex and ambitious we have taken on," said Race Director Phil Lawrence. "The narrow channels and confined waters make it tricky from a navigation point of view, but so too is catering for the large amounts of leisure and commercial traffic as we get close to Kiel. We've been told to expect over 100,000 spectators and up to 1,000 boats which has meant a great deal of planning that includes a detailed marshalling schedule.

"As an indication of the local impact that this leg will have, the Kiel canal will be closed for two hours and commercial shipping has been suspended in the immediate area.

Life On The Edge - Abby Ehler - Holcim PRB
Ask any of the Ocean Race crew members aboard the leading three boats about the blast across the Atlantic on Leg 5 and you can be sure that the word 'intense' will crop up plenty of times. Riding one weather system for 3,300miles pushed boats and crews beyond what was previously considered a red line. Abby Ehler is no stranger to racing around the world and in her current role as Holcim PRB crew member she explains to Matt Sheahan what life is like aboard the new world of turbo charged IMOCAs and what it means for the future of offshore racing

Women in the Rolex Fastnet Race
Prior to the last few editions of the Rolex Fastnet Race we have featured some of the key women competing in that year's event, demonstrating how female participation in offshore yacht racing is very much alive at every level, albeit in smaller numbers compared to men.

What percentage of the fleet would you think are women? 5%? 10% 20%? 30%? Currently we don't have the figure for this year's race, but we do have exact numbers for 2021 -- In the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race 12.7% of competitors were women. -- James Boyd

Here is a list of some of the women participating in this year's race:

Sam Davies (GBR), Initiatives Coeur, IMOCA class
Tor Tomlinson (GBR), JPK 11.80 Sunrise, IRC 2
Astrid de Vin (NED), JPK 10.30 Il Corvo, IRC Two
Jenny Taylor-Jones (GBR), S&S 39 Sunstone, IRC Four
Shirley Gervolino (FRA/GBR), Beneteau 47.7 EH01, IRC One
Tinka Visser (NED), J/109 Jybe Talkin, IRC Three

Pierre Henry Mahul's Hamble 50, "DetachWithLove", and his passions

Pierre Henry Mahul Pierre-Henry Mahul, 64 years old, is a French skipper participating in the Global Solo Challenge. He has already sailed hundreds of thousands of miles at sea and has owned twenty-five boats. An eclectic person longing for adventure, his green eyes scour the sea in search of a new horizon. In his safe harbor, three important women in his life support him and accompany him with love on his next adventure.

The idea of sailing solo around the world has always fascinated Pierre-Henry. In 2020, he prepared his Hallberg-Rassy 53 and set off from Bandol, near Toulon, with this project in mind that he called the Bandol Globe. The boat was heavy, tonnes. He installed a special wind pilot from the Canadian company CapHorn. Due to a problem with the pilot, Mahul stopped for a month in Cadiz. In the meantime, the weather conditions evolved, and thanks to his routier, he realised that reaching Cape Horn before April was no longer possible. "In that season, there is a risk of gusts of 70 knots. I have never sailed in more than 62 knots, which is already a lot. Having arrived off the coast of Brazil in search of wind, I decided to postpone my circumnavigation by the three Capes to another time and decided to round the legendary Cape Horn from east to west instead and then return to Europe."

His passage was validated by the International Association of Cape Horners. It was an experience that marked him. He is no longer the same person, and his desire to try a new circumnavigation by the three capes remains intact.

Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy Regatta
The Sir Kenneth Preston regatta hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron was blessed with 3 days of sunshine and wind. Shorts and t-shirts were donned as 12 Etchells fought it out in the Solent with the PRO Philip Warwick and his race team faced with difficult winds but doing a brilliant job.

Day 1
For the first race a few boats cut it extremely close timing wise, nearly missing their start. Youth team Ziggy helmed by Jack Lewis took the win, showing the success of The Royal London Etchells Youth Academy, however Exabyte, helmed by Shaun Frohlich, managed to get into their groove and proceeded to win the next 2 races of the day. A one hour postponement between races 2 and 3 allowed a little too much pale flesh to be put on display. After racing the teams all scrubbed up and headed to the Royal Yacht Squadron for dinner.

Day 2
Teams arrived at the yacht haven with some sore heads as a consequence of David Maclean's Champagne, which seems to have become the standard for an Etchells Saturday night. Another day of glorious sunshine and tricky northerly breeze was enjoyed, Jolly Roger helmed by Bruno Van-Dyke scored a bullet in races 5 and 7, while Exabyte kept an impressive low score line of 2,1,2.

Day 3
The sunshine was still in full force as the wind picked up for a final day of champagne sailing. The youth teams came out strong Ziggy taking the bullet in race 7 while Audrey helmed by Vita Heathcote took it in race 8, the last race of the day was won by Standfast - Simon Patterson - a newcomer to the class.

The overall win for the regatta saw Exabyte - Shaun Frohlich 1st, Jolly Roger - Bruno van-Dyke 2nd and Audrey (first youth boat) - Vita Heathcote 3rd. 1st Corinthian place went to Ziggy - Jack Lewis

Rolex Giraglia Turns 70
On Saturday, June 10 in the waters of Saint-Tropez 184 yachts from all over the world are expected to start the registration procedure for the three days of inshore races before the start of the long race on Wednesday, June 14 at midday.

At the start a fleet more mixed than ever with a large number of maxi yachts: 31 in category 0, including the winner of line honours in 2022, the Wally 100 Magic Carpet Cubed owned by Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones. A serious contender in the 2023 edition will certainly be the Australian 100-footer Black Jack owned by Peter Harbourg. The yacht is well known in the Rolex Giraglia first as Alfa Romeo II, then holder of the current race record set in 2012 (14h56m16s) as Esimit Europa 2. Others in the running for a win the Line Honours: the Wally 100 Galateia, the two big Swans, the 98' Drifter Cube and the 90' Berenice Cube.

The spotlight will also be on Pier Luigi Loro Piana's My Song, a ClubSwan 80 which with its radical design and lightweight could be a serious contender for first place in this long race. As well as the bigger yachts, we will have boats of all sizes and characteristics, and practically all of them are possible contenders for victory in corrected time, depending on the weather conditions, always an unpredictable factor in a race of 241 nautical miles. Among them are the various JPKs, the Kers (last year Lisa R, a Ker 46, was the overall winner), the Cookson 50s and the fast TP52s (so far three have entered: Red Bandit, Jolt 3 and Arobas, which was third in the IRC rankings last year).
