Conditions in Miami could not have been more perfect for the last day of racing at the 2011 Miami Winter Regatta hosted by Coconut Grove Sailing Club (CGSC). All six races scheduled were conducted - four on Saturday and Sunday delivered two longer courses. Spectators were glued to the action with a steady 12-15 knots of breeze pumping in from the North-Northeast, gorgeous sunshine and flat seas for the start. Event champion Paul Reilly had a less than fantastic ninth place result in the first race, but made up for it in race two with the ultimate win. He held off the likes of 2011 Audi Melges 20 Miami Winter Series leader Michael Kiss on Bacio, Hollerbach and Carroll. At one point Kiss led the race, as did Carroll. On the final upwind finish beat, Reilly found the all right gears putting him across the finish in first, Carroll and Kiss finished respectively. Simoneschi stole the show in the Melges 24 class. His best opposition came from Cary Seigler on Rock Steady, Kristen Lane on Team Brickhouse 812, Guy Mossman on Battle Rhythm and Brian Porter on Full Throttle. It was a constant dogfight between these teams, each trying to reign in Simoneschi's lead. The final race of the day found Simoneschi launched with a massive lead taking the win and the regatta title. The top-five finishers from the 2009 New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup received automatic berths for the 2011 event, and all have accepted. They are (in order of finish) the New York Yacht Club (USA); Royal Canadian Yacht Club (CAN); Japan Sailing Federation (JAP); Nylandska Jaktklubben (FIN) and Royal Cork Yacht Club (IRL). New entries include the Yacht Club Argentino (ARG); Cruising Yacht Club of Australia; Yacht Club Capri (ITA), Yacht Club Punta Ala (ITA), Clube Naval de Cascais (POR); Royal Cape Yacht Club (SA) and Itchenor Sailing Club (GBR). Also returning from 2009 are the Royal Yacht Squadron (GBR); Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (BER); Yacht Club Italiano (ITA) and Real Club Nautico de Barcelona (ESP). Rounding out the fleet will be three additional U.S. teams that were determined by the outcome of a 24-club U.S. Qualifying Series held at the NYYC in September 2010: Eastern Yacht Club (Marblehead, Mass.); Annapolis Yacht Club (Annapolis, Md.) and Newport Harbor Yacht Club (Newport Beach, Calif.). The event will again be sailed in NYYC Swan 42s on Rhode Island Sound and Narragansett Bay, with the headquarters being the NYYC's Harbour Court clubhouse overlooking Newport Harbor. In addition to Rolex, which for 2011 and 2013 is the presenting sponsor, Sperry Top-Sider and Nautor's Swan have also returned as sponsors to enhance the experience of competitors as well as those who will be following the races. Among the high-profile skippers returning to the competition this year are Makoto Uematsu (Japan Sailing Federation); Leonardo Ferragamo (Nylandska Jaktklubben); Anthony O'Leary (Royal Cork Yacht Club); and Mark Watson (Royal Bermuda Yacht Club), who finished third through sixth, respectively. The NYYC, which won the inaugural event with Phil Lotz (Newport, R.I./New Canaan, Conn.) skippering, will hold a sail-off to determine its 2011 team, as will many of the other clubs that have accepted invitations. Length is 6 meters and beam 1.5 meters with a weight of 380Kg and interior ballast of 180kg, sail area in main and jib is 13 sqm (139 sq ft). The interior is 150kg ballast in the form of lead ingots and a center console has laminated lead ingots of 30kg, approximately 0.85 m below the waterline. Overall, this gives a hull that is marked 'initial stiff' and feels stable even at a slight angle. This is well something you usually do not associate with sailing canoes. To help, it also has "krangbradorna" short sitting out boards. These project 400mm from the side of the hull and has a hoist that angles them upward when you do not sit on them to prevent drag. But with eight days and more than 2,000 nautical miles of ocean sprint three under his belt, confidence is running high onboard Spartan. The only issue CSM has had in the last few days is when a strop connecting a headsail to a halyard broke, dropping the sail into the water. Spartan has a top pedigree in ocean racing, having won the VELUX 5 OCEANS under the helm of Italian Giovanni Soldini. In the 2006/7 edition of the race Sir Robin Knox-Johnston raced her round the world again as Grey Power. Despite trailing Brad by around 300 nautical miles CSM was this morning less than 170 miles behind third placed Derek Hatfield and is certain he can reel in the leading pack in the coming days. The fleet are now less than 2,500 nautical miles from Cape Horn, the most southerly point of South America and one of the most feared bodies of water in the world. The event features 11 RC44 teams representing nine nations. It's the 3rd oldest sailing class trophy in the world, falling right behind the Snipes and Star class for longevity. Sydney Harbor is the birthplace of the 18s, which dates back to 1892. Initiated by a local sailing enthusiast named Mark Foy, to literally give the local sailing scene a kick in the pants and bring the sport into the collective minds and souls of the general populace's lexicon. A visionary, Mark decided that's racing must be more exciting, faster and with more color and flair than number on white cotton sails. 18' long and 8 ' wide were the only design limitations. "Make em fast and colorful" and add some gaming and uncertainly and the betting crazy Aussie's will come. And they have in droves. 18' racing is big business in Sydney, with a season that runs from October through March. The Aussie 18's League has over 4,000 members, never mind that only 117 of them are listed as sailing members. Collectively, it works…. Since it's 1938 inception, The JJ's have been held 62 times, mostly in Sydney Harbor, but also in Auckland, Brisbane, and Fiji. Racing will take place in Falmouth Bay and the Carrick Roads from May 18-22. These days the Six Metre class ('6mR') accommodates both 'Classics' which are exquisitely-crafted wooden yachts and the newer sleeker 'Moderns' within its racing fleet. The term 'Six Metre' refers to the measurement rule to which they are built, which actually produces boats about 11 metres (36-ft) long. The regatta has already 20 yachts registered, bringing in excess of 100 yachtsmen and women, together with their support teams, to Falmouth. It will be the first time the fleet has assembled in Falmouth in such numbers since 1988. Yachts will be arriving from the Solent, Scotland, the Channel Islands and France as well as from the more local fleets in St Mawes and Fowey. Great Britain has the largest and most active fleet of Six Metre yachts in the world. Although primarily a championship regatta, the organisers are hoping that this year's event will not only raise the profile of the 6mRs but will also establish the West Country event as a regular feature in the Association's annual sailing programme. Indeed, there is already talk of a Europeans or World championships coming to Cornwall in 2014. It is a development class with every boat a unique one-off, attracting kings and entreprenuers as well as top names in the sport and design world, including Ian Howlett, Pelle Peterson, Olin Stephens, Johan Ankers; ex-Whitbread supremo Lawrie Smith; America's Cup stalwart Chris Mason, and businessman Peter de Savary. Falmouth hosts the first major event of the fleet's 2011 season after which many of the boats will be heading for La Trinite in France for the L'Entente Cordiale and French Open or back to home waters before moving on to Helsinki, Finland, for the World Cup in early August.
