Filipe Silva extends after two more races at Finn World Masters
Filipe Silva, from Portugal, has extended his lead at the 2023 Finn World Masters at Nea Iraklitsa, Kavala, Greece, after two races were sailed on Thursday. Laurent Hay, from France is back up to second with Peter Mosny from Slovakia in third. Race wins went to Hay and Peter Peet from The Netherlands.

It's taken long enough but finally the Gulf of Kavala delivered on the Day 4 of the championship with the promised conditions. Two races were sailed in 9-10 knots of sea breeze, clear blue skies and soaring temperatures. It was a long day on the water but a Finntastic day to be sailing.

More importantly, four races have now been sailed and after forecasts predicted a very challenging week for wind, there was a collective sigh of relief to get in a valid series.

With a discard only coming into play after five races a lot can still change if just one more race is sailed, with a number of boats counting high scores or letter scores. Silva has yet to make a mistake, but Hay is sailing extremely well, and others are poised to pounce. The scorelines of the top 10 are a graphic illustration of the conditions with only Silva maintaining single digit scores.

There is all to play for on Friday, the final day of the championship. Two races are scheduled, though with a 15.00 cut off and the wind only appearing today at 14.40, most are only expecting one race to be sailed.

Results after four races:
1. Filipe Silva, POR, 13
2. Laurent Hay, FRA, 31
3. Peter Mosny, SVK, 49
4. Székely Antal, HUN, 50
5. Peter Peet, NED, 62
6. Kantor Zsigmond, HUN, 76
7. Lucas Prescott, AUS, 82
8. Ladislav Hyrs, CZE, 86
9. Akos Lukats, HUN, 93
10. Nick Craig, GBR, 94

Thunder stops play, Sled still on top
Due to the threat of big thunderstorms only one race was sailed today at the 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week. Quantum Racing powered by American Magic bounced back from a disappointing second race Wednesday, when they stole the Race 5 winning gun from under the noses of the Whitcraft family's Vayu.

Vayu, with Don Whitcraft steering, Nick Rogers calling tactics and Miles Seddon navigating looked set to record their second race win in a row until the defending 2022 champions pipped them on the line.

Taking fifth today Takashi Okura's Sled remain on top of the standings with a three points margin over the family team from Thailand who in turn are one point up on Quantum Racing and Provezza who are both on the same 20pts aggregate.

Sled stay consistent and lead into the last two days of this regatta in Tuscany. Last year they topped the standings into the final day but failed to close out the regatta title.

52 SUPER SERIES Scarlino Sailing Week Provisional standings after five races
1. Sled (USA), Takashi Okura, 1+5+1+4+5 = 16
2. Vayu (THA), Whitcraft Family, 3+6+7+1+2 = 19

Game-changing green power generation - McConaghy Boats
McConaghy Boats From fast charging systems and photovoltaic glass to the next generation of hydrogen fuel cell technology, McConaghy Boats is pushing the boundaries of sustainable marine power solutions

On the face of it, sailboats provide a head start when it comes to going green. And yet despite the number of ways in which hydro and wind generated power has already been achieved across both racing and cruising craft of all sizes for many years, stepping things up to the next stage of emission free systems is proving to be more taxing than many had originally anticipated. McConaghy Boats are further down the line in this area than many.

They see the road to success as involving a number of stages that are based around combining a range of techniques rather than holding out for a single solution. The company also has several clear advantages both in the type of boats that they are famous for and their acknowledged experience with highperformance composites. In particular, McConaghy's range of luxury performance cruising cats has not only grown considerably over the years, but has drawn a great deal of attention thanks to their looks and performance.

Black Jack leads the 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar away
The 14th 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar set sail at 1400 today off Livorno, Italy. With light winds forecast, the organisers - Yacht Club Punta Ala, Yacht Club Livorno, Yacht Club Repubblica Marinara di Pisa - prior to the start announced the course would be shortened. From the start, the race would follow its usual course to a weather mark and then to a turning mark off Marina di Pisa, continuing southwest to the Giraglia rock off northeast Corsica and on to pass through the newly introduced gate off southwest Elba. But then the fleet could head directly to the Punta Ala finish without having to round the Formiche di Grosseto rocks, usually the race's southerly turning mark. The new course reduces the race mileage from 151 to 124.

With 13 maxis competing among the 180 starters, the 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar continues the International Maxi Association's seven event 2022-23 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Championship. Following last autumn's Rolex Middle Sea Race and the recent Regata dei Tre Golfi, the annual series concludes with August's Palermo-Montecarlo.

As expected, Australian Peter Harburg's 100ft Black Jack was fastest away from the start line. At the weather mark most of the fleet hoisted kites for the reach across to the turning mark off Marina di Pisa. Black Jack was slowly extending away here despite flying a gennaker while the plucky 90ft Arca SGR carried a kite.

A lengthy park-up was expected overnight with the first arrivals not due into Punta Ala until Friday afternoon. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

Sailing World on Water
This week we unashamedly start with a promo for the fabulous Superyacht Cup in Palma Mallorca. Kate and her team will, once again, host the cup June 21 to 24 where over a dozen prospective entries have declared an interest in joining the superyacht festival with racing on the Bay of Palma, including a trio of the awe-inspiring J Class yachts.

Alongside likely 2023 returnees Velsheda and Svea, is Lionheart, last seen at Super Yacht Cup in 2014 when she took three race wins - including a dead heat finish - on the way to the top of a five-strong J Class fleet.

There is a new trend in sailing, High Altitude conditioning!

Firstly this month Aussie legend, Sun Hung Kai Scallywags David Witt was seen testing his lung capacity with a trek to the Everest Base Camp.

Then this week Maxime Sorel, 36, accompanied by Ngima Gyaljen Sherpa, reached the summit of Everest (8,848 meters) on Thursday May 18. He becomes the first man in the world to have completed a Vondée Globe "the Everest of the seas", Solo Round the World, non-stop and without sailing assistance, and Everest, the roof of the world located in Nepal. -- Geoff Waller

Talk turns to weather for inaugural Sydney to Auckland Ocean Race
As interest builds in the inaugural Sydney to Auckland Ocean Race, to start Saturday 7 October 2023 on Sydney Harbour, talk has turned to likely weather patterns, so organisers at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) naturally turned to world-renowned meteorologist, Australia's own Roger 'Clouds' Badham.

Badham's report gives yacht owners' targets and benchmarks after looking at various scenarios; routes for a 100 foot maxi, a TP52 and a Beneteau First 40, which will pique interest of yachties. Ten years of wind data from the European Model have been used and a west Tasman Sea generic current - 10 days for each of the 10 years makes 100.

The years used are 2009 to 2018, with each route starting at 11am local (0000Z), starting early October each year.

"Current is a difficult one to include, so routes were run with and without current. In springtime, the East Australian Current main arm typically runs south, just east of the continental shelf, with return currents running back to the north around the major warm eddies. By October, there is usually a major warm eddy east of Seal Rocks," Badham says.

Routing results
(average, fastest and slowest elapsed times)
100' maxi is 3 days 7 hrs/1 day 23 hrs/5 days 4 hrs
TP52 is 4 days 17 hrs/3 days 0 hrs/7 days 4 hrs
Beneteau First 40 is 6 days 22 hrs/5 days 11 hrs/9 days 11 hrs

Promoting Your Dinghy Class: Could You Handle Some Extra Help?
Where is dinghy racing in the UK headed and how can we make it better than it is today? That was the broad question addressed in a recent Zoom call which attracted a live audience to discuss the issues facing the sport in the fast-changing times we're living in.

Hosted by the co-organisers of the Selden Sailjuice Winter Series, Simon Lovesey and Andy Rice, the aim was to find out what are the roadblocks to greater participation in small-boat racing, and also to find out some of the best practices so that they can be shared more widely across clubs and classes in the UK.

Around 60 participants showed up to share their views. There was a huge amount of useful feedback on the 60-minute call. One of the themes that kept on coming up was fragmentation. Too many small events with small turnouts that don't really work for anyone.

Class Associations Group: interested?

Simon Lovesey is looking to form a Class Associations Group, so if you're on your class committee would like to explore potential collaboration with other classes, sign up here for the next online meeting on Zoom:

Medical Emergencies
Most of us who plan and then make long cruises across oceans are all over preparing our boats for the challenges of seafaring. But, being prepared for medical emergencies when far from a doctor or a hospital is another matter. In the many years I have spent cruising and sailing in remote parts of the world, I've seen a range of medical emergencies that had to be dealt with without a doctor or medical facilities.

Sailing through Windward Passage, a crewmember came down with a bad case of kidney stones that required a serious pain killer injection. In French Polynesia, a crewmember caught dengue fever that brought a dangerous 105-degree fever and required large doses of acetaminophen. Also in French Polynesia, a cruiser friend ate a reef fish and came down with a case of ciguatera poisoning that put him into anaphylactic shock and required a shot of epinephrine (Epi Pen).

We've had crew step on sea urchins (and you know how to treat that) and get badly stung by a Portuguese man of war requiring lidocane. And, I've seen coral cuts that became badly infected and required powerful antibiotic drugs and ointments. In each instance, we and our buddy cruisers were able to provide the needed treatments from the stores of our medical kits.

So, as you prepare for the cruising life in remote regions of the planet, take time to confer with your doctor, take first aid and CPR courses, learn how to give an injection and apply stitches and work with adventure medicine professionals like Michael Jacobs, MD and Eric Weiss, MD to build a medical kit that will meet just about any emergencies that cruisers face out there. You can check out the Adventure Medical Kit website here. -- George Day
