Strong start for Dutch on home waters at Allianz Regatta
The opening day of action of the Allianz Regatta was dominated by the Dutch on home waters as they led the way in four of the six classes in action.

In fact it was only in the two Formula Kite classes that the home competitors were denied, with a strong French showing.

Perhaps the standout performance for Dutch fans came in the iQFOiL Men, where Luuc van Opzeeland led a Dutch 1-2-3 through four heats.

The 2022 world silver medallist won three of the four heats, coming second in the other, to lead compatriot Huig-Jan Tak by six points.

The Olympic champion, Kiran Badloe, is a point further back, finishing the day with a win and a second place after a slow start in the opening two heats.

Similarly impressive in the 49er class were reigning world champions Bart Lambriex and Floris van der Werken, who won all three heats on day one. That was enough to open up a three-point lead on Austrians Benjamin Bildstein and David Hussl.

VO65 fleet returns to race in The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint
The last time we saw the VO65 fleet in The Ocean Race was in January and the teams had just completed the opening stage of the VO65 Sprint, from Alicante, Spain to Cabo Verde.

The Polish-flagged WindWhisper Racing Team won the race south from the Mediterranean out to the Atlantic, with Team JAJO and Austrian Ocean Racing powered by Team Genova rounding out the podium.

Now the fleet is making its way north, to Aarhus, Denmark, in anticipation of meeting up once again with The Ocean Race ahead of the second stage of the VO65 Sprint. The WindWhisper Racing Team is already in Aarhus, training ahead of the Leg.

The Ambersail team will not return for the final two stages of The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint, while the Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team is in a new collaboration with Trifork for the final two stages of the event.

The teams will assemble in Aarhus in the coming days ahead of the In-Port Race on 4 June, and then the VO65 fleet will race directly to The Hague (no Kiel Fly-By) starting on 8 June. The last stage of the VO65 Sprint takes the fleet to Genova, Italy for the Grand Finale.

Scarlino Takashi Okura's Sled team were top scoring boat over a testing day of shifting, light breezes on the Gulf of Follonica at the 52 SUPER SERIES Scarlino Sailing Week today. The 2021 circuit champions sailed to a first and a fourth place, whilst their nearest title rivals so far this week, Quantum Racing powered by American Magic, faltered with a tenth in the second contest - the result of being over the start line early.

The light sea breeze was fading fast by the time the first race finished, but Sled - with the owner steering and Kiwi ace Murray Jones calling tactics - held on to a comfortable lead to take their second winning gun of the week. The second windward-leeward contest saw a big shift after the first upwind leg as well as big differences in wind pressure across the same areas of the course. There were times when boats only 100 metres apart were either fully powered up, crew hiked or struggling for wind with crew weight in and low.

Gladiator, with owner Tony Langley calling tactics and four times 52 SUPER SERIES winner Guillermo Parada on the wheel, made a perfect start to the first race, at full speed at the pin end of the line before working the left side early, moving right to lead around the windward mark. Down the run they were caught by Sled who then took the right of the second beat and earned a solid lead, winning ahead of Gladiator and Quantum Racing powered by American Magic.

52 SUPER SERIES Scarlino Sailing Week . Provisional standings after four races 1. Sled (USA), Takashi Okura, 1+5+1+4 = 11 2. Provezza (TUR), Ergin Imre, 6+2+6+2 = 16 3. 13 maxis for 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar

Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar The 14th 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar starts tomorrow (1 June) at 1400 CEST, its 200-strong fleet featuring 13 maxi yachts. The event continues the International Maxi Association's 2022-23 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Championship, following last autumn's Rolex Middle Sea Race and the recent Regata dei Tre Golfi.

Organised by Yacht Club Punta Ala, Yacht Club Livorno and Yacht Club Repubblica Marinara di Pisa, the 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar is scheduled to follow its usual course from Livorno up to Marina di Pisa; southwest to the Giraglia rock off north Corsica; southeast, passing Elba, to the race's southerly turning mark, the Formiche di Grosseto rocks; before returning north to the Punta Ala finish.

This year two boats are likely to be fighting it out for line honours. ARCA SGR was to race their 100 footer until they sustained damage during the Regata dei Tre Golfi. As their yacht is repaired, they have joined forces with another Trieste-based maxi, the 90ft Shockwave 3, which for this race is renamed ARCA Shockwave 3 Prosecco Doc.

However she will face stiff competition from the 100ft Black Jack - recently arrived from Australia to compete in this season's Mediterranean circuit. By coincidence both boats were originally Alfa Romeos launched by Kiwi Neville Crichton - the water-ballasted 90 footer was his Rolex Sydney Hobart line honours winner in 2002 while the longer, canting keel/CBTF Black Jack was first home in 2009. -- James Boyd

Smashing It - The Ocean Race - Leg 5
Just when we thought we had seen the IMOCAs at full noise in the Southern Ocean, their blast across the North Atlantic from Newport USA to Aarhus, Denmark set a completely new benchmark. When it comes to clocking up the most miles in 24 hours, three of The Ocean Race teams are now the fastest offshore monohulls in the world, smashing the previous record of a 100ft supermaxi on steroids. Matthew Sheahan heads to the finish in Aarhus to find out how the record was demolished and how a new team has taken the lead.

Estrella Damm Embarks on the 37th America's Cup
The Antigua Fábrica Estrella Damm in Barcelona this morning hosted the presentation of Estrella Damm's sponsorship of the 37th America's Cup, which will be held in Barcelona in 2024. The event, in which the mythical America's Cup - the oldest sports trophy in history, dating back to 1851− took centre stage, was attended by Grant Dalton, CEO of the 37th America's Cup, and Jorge Villavecchia, CEO of Damm, who talked about Barcelona, the economic impact that the competition will have, the citizens' participation in the tournament and the importance of sustainability in the management of an event of this size.

"We are so proud to have Estrella Damm back sponsoring both the America's Cup event as well as Emirates Team New Zealand, as in 2007. The fact we have so effortlessly re-established the partnership again after 16 years since we last competed in Spain illustrates the enduring relationship with largely the same people within both organisations", commented Grant Dalton

As the official sponsor, Estrella Damm will be the competition beer and be given visibility in the different spaces provided both for the preliminary regatta in Vilanova i la Geltrú\u and during the competition in Barcelona. It will also carry out actions that bring the competition and the sport of sailing closer to the general public.

The event also served to announce that Estrella Damm will be a sponsor of Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ), the defending champion whose title will be on the line in the summer-autumn of 2024.

Cup Spy: Brits and Italians have solid days on the Med. The Swiss look to F1
What happened in the Cup:

- Luna Rossa sailed from Cagliari.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing launched their AC75 on both days, with some photoshooting being undertaken ahead of the F1 round starting in Barcelona in early June.

- Emirates Team New Zealand tried sailing on Thursday, May 25, but the wind failed to eventuate. Both the LEQ12 and AC40 match raced in a light breeze on Friday May 26, with the AC40OD team getting the better of it at the starts, but losing to the speed of the LEQ12 upwind.

- INEOS Britannia sailed out of Mallorca.

- American Magic, last sailed on March 10, and is packing out to make the move to their permanent base in Barcelona.

- No further news from the Orient Express Team (formerly K-Challenge).

Arb Panel dismisses American Magic request to be excused from Jeddah regatta
The three man Arbitration Panel has dismissed the Application by the New York Yacht Club's team American Magic to be excused from participation in the second Preliminary Event, part of the 37th America's Cup.

The regatta for AC40 One Design yachts is to be sailed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from November 30 to December 3, 2023, between the six teams entered in the 2024 America's Cup due to be sailed in Barcelona.

"The Arbitration Panel dismissed the Application (Case 004) saying it was a matter for the Challenger of Record and Defender (COR/D) Emirates Team New Zealand representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and INEOS Britannia representing the Royal Yacht Squadron. COR/D, in their submissions opposed the Application being granted.

The US team made its Application to be excused as it believed that its team members' safety was at risk in Saudi Arabia.

In its decision, released on May 28, 2023 the Arbitration Panel effectively turned the matter over to COR/D to hear the matter.

"The Application is dismissed. When COR/D makes a decision on whether or not to excuse American Magic (AM) from participation in the Second AC37 Preliminary Regatta in Jeddah, if AM considers such decision to be not in accordance with the Protocol, AM may make a new application to the Panel. Such decision by COR/D must be "on reasonable grounds". Such (a) test is subjective," the Arbitration Panel noted in its Decision.

Should the Application to be excused from participation, fail at both the COR/D and Arbitration Panel level, and American Magic decides not to participate in the Jeddah regatta, then COR/D can make an application to the Arbitration Panel for penalties to be applied.
