Filipe Silva takes lead at Finn World Masters after Day 2
Filipe Silva, from Portugal, has taken the lead at the 2023 Finn World Masters at Nea Iraklitsa, Kavala, Greece after one more race was sailed on Tuesday. Winner of the only race on Tuesday, David Terol from Spain, moves up to second with Italy's Marco Buglielli up to third.

A windless and cloudy morning led to a 75-minute postponement ashore, but the fleet was sent out in a building breeze and clearing skies. However, by the time the fleet reached the course area it was already starting to die. After an hour of waiting there was nothing left but a glassy sea and increasing temperatures, so the fleet was towed back to the beach to wait.

By 15.00 there were signs a new breeze was developing and the sailors waited until 15.20 when AP ashore was removed again.

A second race was attempted by the wind was dropping and becoming unstable so was abandoned soon after the start and the fleet sent back to the beach.

Two races are now scheduled for Wednesday at 13.00 after the Annual Masters Meeting in the morning.

Racing is scheduled to continue until Friday. -- Robert Deaves

A new generation has arrived - Magenta Project
Magenta Project Women like the Magenta Project alumnus Rebecca Coles are stepping up into major, high-stakes crewing roles in the Cape 31 class

At this year's St Maarten Heineken Regatta, Flying Jenny was a sight to behold. A portrait of Sandy Askew's mother filled the namesake Cape 31's illustrious spinnaker and set the tone: a new generation of sports yachts has arrived, and women are writing the narrative. 2019 Magenta Project alumnus Rebecca Coles has been boat captain and bow for Flying Jenny, traveling across the UK, US and Caribbean with the team.

The sportsboat class is typically dominated by the local Melges fleet in this regatta, which are run by teams from St Maarten's highly competitive marine industry. This year, the next-generation pocket racer Cape 31 shook up the scene, with Flying Jenny booting regatta regulars off the podium and winning the St Maarten Heineken regatta's famous Round the Island Race in CSA3.

Only tiebreak separates Quantum Racing and Sled after two in Tuscany
Photo by Max Ranchi, www.maxranchi.com. Click on image for photo gallery.

Tuscany TP52 The Quantum Racing powered by American Magic team may have missed tactician John Kostecki - who had to step aside at the last second at the weekend with a medical issue - but they still managed to compose a solid opening day to the 52 SUPER SERIES Scarlino Sailing Week and lead on countback from Takashi Okura's Sled.

After an intense pair of light sea-breeze races on the Gulf of Follonica both teams share the same six points aggregate after winning a race apiece. The 2021 champions Sled and defending circuit champions Quantum reprise a particular rivalry which prevailed here in Tuscany last September, albeit one which was played out in much stronger breezes and with both teams featuring different afterguards.

Racing on Wednesday is now scheduled for a midday warning signal.

4. Provezza (TUR), Ergin Imre, 6+2 = 8

Swallow Class Inshore Championship & build up to the 75th Anniversary Regatta
Photo by Kirsty Bang. Click on image for photo gallery.

Swallow This year the National Swallow Class is celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the 1948 Olympic Regatta when K7 Swift, sailed by Stewart Morris and David Bond, won gold. With a fleet of thirty Swallows expected at the Anniversary Championships to be hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron on the 15/16th July something quite special is expected. This event will be the largest gathering of these modern classics in recent memory.

Over the late May bank holiday weekend twenty four National Swallows enjoyed sparkling one design racing at Itchenor Sailing Club as the perfect build up to Anniversary Championships. The Norman Moore trophy is the unofficial in-harbour class championship. The depth of talent on show was reflected in the results, where neither the current National Champion nor last year's winner made it to the podium.

The racing on both days was held in a shifting north easterly breeze keeping all the competitors on their toes. Carolyn Brigg's Marengo secured the first race by a huge margin and went on to another convincing win in race three making her the overnight leader but Osprey, helmed by James Hartley, after a difficult first race, was hot on their tails with a win in race two. On Sunday the north easterly breeze was stronger, but just as shifty. Hugo Fisher and Nigel Masding's Svala maintained their consistency never dropping out of the top three and Mike Wigmore's Gwaihir kept the pressure on with another second in race four but, in the end, it was Osprey that moved up to another gear to take the last two races, and with that the coveted Norman Moore trophy. Completing the podium was Buccaneer S66 built by Mike Bond in 1978 and skillfully sailed by him this weekend showing that neither a brand new boat nor a brand new helm is required to do well in this classic dayboat class.

Kiwis start Match Racing training off Takapuna
Emirates Team New Zealand completed a match race practice session off Takapuna Beach, on Friday, after waiting several hours for some sailable breeze. Sail-World's NZ Editor gives his take on the afternoon and the how the AC-40's shakedown for match racing.

The session got underway around 2.00 pm, in a light sea breeze, using three laid marks.

The racing was rather underwhelming, with long periods of downtime, principally with the LEQ12, and it appeared that the team was trying to combine some development testing with the match racing practice.

Two AC40s were used with the Match Racing specialist crew co-skippered by Josh Junior and Leo Takahashi, competing against the AC75 crew co-skippered by Peter Burling and Nathan Outteridge.

The Match Racing team appeared to have the better day in the pre-start phase in relatively tame starts where the two boats locked up late in the start and sailed a long tack into the start line on starboard, with the windward yacht being forced to break and tack onto port soon after crossing the startline.

In the races, which continued for a full first leg, the LEQ12 was first with an expected speed advantage over the AC40 One Design.

Teasing Machine wins RORC Myth of Malham Race
The Royal Ocean Racing Club was saddened to hear that two sailors had been lost at sea this weekend, racing in the English Channel in two separate races organised by JOG and the Sussex Yacht Club. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family and friends of the two sailors at this difficult time.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club's Myth of Malham Race attracted a record entry of 147 boats racing under the IRC Rating Rule for the Myth of Malham Cup. The 235nm race attracted the largest entry for any offshore yacht race, since the 2022 Newport Bermuda.

A downwind start, with spinnakers flying in bright sunshine was spectacular viewing in Cowes. Strategy came straight into play immediately after leaving the Solent. With light wind forecast for the middle of the English Channel, the big decision was whether to play the local breeze on the South Coast of England or venture across the English Channel to gain favourable wind off the French Coast, ever mindful of the Casquettes Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS). Teams in the race reported wind speed as high as 27 knots and as low as a total shut down.

After IRC time correction, RORC Vice Commodore Eric de Turckheim racing NMD 54 Teasing Machine (FRA) was the winner. Runner-up was RORC Commodore James Neville in his debut race with Carkeek 45 Ino Noir (GBR). Third was the Family De Graaf's Ker 43 Baraka GP (NED). Fourth was Jean Pierre Barjon's Botin 65 Spirit of Lorina (GBR). Peter Morton's Maxi 72 Notorious (GBR) took Line Honours, won IRC Super Zero and was fifth overall. Gorm Gondesen's Nica (GER) took Multihull Line Honours.

Congratulations to all of the class winners including (IRC One) Gilles Fournier & Corinne Migraine's Pintia, (IRC Two) Ross Applebey's Scarlet Oyster, (IRC Three) Mike Yates' JAGO, (IRC T-H) Dan & Zeb Fellow's Orbit, and (IRC Four) Scherzo of Cowes raced by Joph Carter & Robbie Southall. -- Louay Habib/RORC

Burnham Week 2023 open for entry
Burnham-on-Crouch, UK: The countdown to Burnham Week 2023 has already started with entries now open writes Sue Pelling. This East Coast regatta that traditionally takes in the August Bank Holiday weekend, this year runs from 26 August-2 September. With eight days of racing and prizes on offer for both weekend and mid-week racing, for a wide range of classes, it is not surprising Burnham Week is one of the most popular late summer, family holiday regattas.

As well as spinnaker and non-spinnaker racing divisions, classes such as the Dragon, RS Elite, Squib, and local Royal Burnham and Royal Corinthian One-Designs enjoy close, competitive racing. After a successful regatta last year with seven boats, the Sandhopper class (bilge keel version of the Squib) is making a welcome return with entries from Thorpe Bay YC on the Thames Estuary and Maylandsea Bay YC on the River Blackwater. Another class making the passage round to Burnham from the River Blackwater is the East Coast One-Design fleet.

Other highlights of the Bank Holiday weekend include racing for the Multihull Offshore Cruising & Racing Association (MOCRA), and a full schedule of dinghy racing for the Osprey, Blaze, Phantom, RS200, ILCA, mixed handicap classes, and any class that can muster a fleet of seven.

Among the prizes on offer for IRC classes on Trophy Day (the final Saturday), is Burnham Week's signature event - the Town Cup - which is being run alongside the Houghton Cup (one of the oldest offshore races on the East Coast) in conjunction with EAORA (East Anglian Offshore Racing Association). -- Sue Pelling
