A quarter point secures North Star IMA Maxi Europeans victory
After seeing victory slip through his fingers in 2022 when his Maxi 72 North Star was becalmed on the final run into the finish of the last race, today owner Peter Dubens, tactician Nick Rogers and the North Star crew were vindicated: Having started the last day of racing at the International Maxi Association's European Championship second overall, their performance today squeezed George Sakellaris' Proteus from the top spot to win the regatta by a mere quarter point after discarding their worst result.

While Sir Peter Ogden's 77ft Jethou was the star performer today, the lower rated North Star had been hanging on to her larger rival's coattails.

After today's final coastal - a course set by PRO Stuart Childerley, zigzagging around the southern Bay of Naples, between Capri and Punta Campanella - the former Maxi 72s claimed the five top spots overall in the Championship: Dario Ferrari's Cannonball was third while Jim Swartz's Vesper beat Sir Peter Ogden's Jethou, also by a quarter point after Vesper didn't sail on Tuesday and Jethou was disqualified from a race yesterday.

Following the Maxi 72s, in sixth place overall was Riccardo de Michele's Vallicelli 78 H20 ahead of Pier Luigi Loro Piana's ClubSwan 80 My Song and IMA President Benoît de Froidmont's Wally 60 Wallyño, which put in a superb performance today finishing fifth overall.

Ocean Race Newport
An action-packed weekend lies ahead for The Ocean Race Newport stopover, with the hydro-foiling IMOCA 60s the stars of the show.

This morning, Kevin Escoffier (FRA) and crew, overall race leaders on Holcim-PRB, arrived at the docks at Sail Newport to join 11th Hour Racing, Team Malizia-Seaexplorer, and Biotherm at Fort Adams State Park.

Holcim-PRB broke its mast on Apr. 27, four days into the leg to Newport, and arrived in Newport yesterday by cargo ship. Last night, the crew fit a replacement mast at the Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard.

Holcim-PRB is expected to participate in Saturday's In-Port Race planned for the East Passage of Narragansett Bay on a course oriented between Fort Adams State Park to the east and Jamestown to the west. Fort Adams State Park is the best vantage point for spectators. The race starts at 2:00 p.m.

On Sunday, a Dockout Show and festivities for the send-off begin at Noon. At 12:15 p.m., the sailors will parade through Ocean Live Park with music and special guests to board their race boats.

By 1:00 p.m., all race boats will be on the water to sail a short course in the Bay before the official start of the trans-Atlantic Leg at 2:10 p.m. in front of Fort Adams State Park.

Superb Day Of Racing Kicks Off 2023 TF23 Season
A superb opening day for the 2023 TF35 season, hosted this week by the esteemed Société Nautique de Genève, saw different teams come to the fore, with Bertrand Demole's Ylliam XII - Comptoir Immobilier winning the day with an impressive 1-3 scoreline, and Nathalie Brugger at the helm of the all-new youth crew onboard Alinghi Red Bull Racing paving their way to potentially becoming this year's underdogs.

The conditions on Lake Geneva today were typical for spring, with a shifty 7-knot La Bise (north wind) building to 13 knots over the afternoon. Yesterday's high winds left a leftover chop, providing a biting spray for the crews onboard the hydro-foiling TF35s.

At the end of day one Ylliam XII - Comptoir Immobilier tops the overnight leaderboard with Realteam Sailing in second place, tied on points with Spindrift. Alinghi Red Bull Racing is a single point off the podium in fourth, with Ylliam 17 in fifth and ZEN Too in sixth.

Racing continues tomorrow with five races planned, starting at 11.30CET. Follow the live race coverage at tf35.org

Swedes Tack Their Way To The Top
Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson (SWE) came three steps closer to successfully defending their title after a barnstorming performance on the first day of gold fleet racing at the 470 European Championship in San Remo, Italy.

The sun peeked out from behind the clouds and easterly breeze blew nicely all day at around 15 to 16 knots, with big rolling waves and a few short, sharp ones in between, just to keep the 470 sailors on their toes.

Friday sees the conclusion of gold fleet competition with three races scheduled to start at 1100 hours local time. Saturday is Medal Race day, for the top 10 teams to battle it out in a single, double-points contest to decide who will make it on to the podium in the Marina degli Aregai. -- Andy Rice

Top 3 overall after eight races
1. Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson (SWE), 18 points
2. Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort (GER), 24 points
3. Hippolyte Machetti and Aloïse Retornaz (FRA), 29 points

Berecz of course is the manager of the host club this year, Procelero SE.
